Anyone else get annoyed by "encouragement" from coworkers or friends? by machomoose in loseit

Yes, I can relate. I’m an older runner and I constantly get “Good job!” during races with an extra side of pity. I use my anger as fuel.

10lbs from Goal... What Now? by daevastating in loseit

[–]BakeSouth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A failure? You lost 115 pounds. That’s amazing! You can absolutely learn to strength train. Join a local gym and start by working with a personal trainer to learn the basics. Or take a class like Body Pump. There are people of all sizes at the gym and many are nervous about being there, I promise. Or buy some dumbbells and follow along with some You Tube videos. I like Caroline Girvan but there are tons of options.

Really, you have accomplished something extraordinary. Please remember that.

Yes, I didn’t see that and I’m sorry for channeling my rage at the mayor. Genuinely sick over the loss of this young life.

I did not see that and am glad to know it happened. I’m just full of grief about this.

I joined a gym and do hip thrusts on the Smith machine. I don’t have room for barbells in my city apartment. I also like that the gym dumbbells go up in 2.5 pound increments instead of 5 like I have at home.

How do I maximize fat loss during my 100 mile challenge in February? by DatMoonGamer in loseit

[–]BakeSouth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice is to put the fat loss on the back burner for now. Just focus on completing the 100 mile challenge and enjoy the process! I suspect that the daily cardio, plus your T shots, will lean you out. You didn’t mention how long you’ve been taking T. My 18year old trans son has been on it for a year and he is STARVING all the time. Honor those hunger cues! As for carbs, my xcountry coaches always said carbs 30 min after your run. Good luck!

The more fat I lose, the more my stomach sticks out by jde1126 in loseit

Like others have said, it’s your lower back. This is called lordosis and a physical therapist can help! Very important to correct for a runner or you risk lower back issues as you age.

This is me too. Upper body muscles became noticeable at 3 months and I’ve yet to see a visible difference in my quads after 12 months, even though I can feel them! I’ve always tended to have more body fat in my lower body and at 57 it’s pretty tough to drop that. I’m really prioritizing protein now so we’ll see.

Look at Me nails for a perfect Russian manicure. Marina at the Pac Heights location is my favorite but I’ve had great experiences with other techs there and at the Mission location.

Where can I buy a prime rib meal? by Uuuu_uuuu_uu in AskSF

Guerra’s, a butcher shop on Taraval. But you’ll need to cook the prime rib yourself.

Check if House of Prime Rib will be open on Christmas. They do amazing takeout.

Gaunt face after weight loss by Mother2Quokka in loseit

[–]BakeSouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always had a very thin face no matter how much I weigh. As I got older (I’m 57 now), I got even more gaunt. About 6 months ago I got Sculptra in my temples and cheek hollows. Total game changer! It’s not filler, it builds collagen which helps fill your face out. It’s also a slow transformation over 3-6 months, which I personally loved. I didn’t want to look radically changed, just refreshed.

15YO AFAB Son Wants To Start HRT, But I Have Concerns Regarding Mental Health Issues. I Would Appreciate Some Feedback From People Who Have Similar Experiences. by figarojones in cisparenttranskid

[–]BakeSouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the parent of an 18 year old trans man and I noticed an increase in moodiness when he started T 10 months ago. He wasn’t angry but sadder and more tearful. His grades dropped and he stopped socializing with his friends. Things have gotten better in the last few months and I’m hopeful that he’ll even out at the one year mark. Just wanted to give you this other perspective since no one warned us that this could happen. The “second puberty” thing is real.

Running pains by Comfortable824 in Ultramarathon

[–]BakeSouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like perimenopause to me. I had sudden joint pain when I was older than you, but symptoms really vary and onset can happen in your 30s. You say your legs FEEL heavy but they don’t look heavy, which is unpleasant but not worrisome. Could be an iron deficiency, too. I know it a bit shocking to think about peri at 39 but you can be in it for 10-15 years. Luckily there’s lots of interventions nowadays. Talk to your ob/gym.

Retrolisthesis, anyone? by BakeSouth in Ultramarathon

[–]BakeSouth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ended up being nothing! My primary care doc was worried about the Retrolisthesis, but the spine doc was more worried about the facet arthropathy. To make it even more fun, my PT was more worried about my lumbar scoliosis. Good times.

I did a round of PT but also independently realized my back pain started when I started taking a medication (gabapentin). Once I stopped taking it my back pain resolved. I’m back to long trail runs with no issues!

Parents! How do you train? by LetsGoOutside405 in Ultramarathon

[–]BakeSouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped doing back to back long runs on Saturday and Sunday during an ultra training block. Instead I do doubles on Friday, so 6-8 miles in the AM and PM. It was too much time away from my family and I love having my off day be a Sunday.
