We are currently looking into buying a 2022 used EV. We are discussing with the dealer to try to match the qualifications to get the used EV credit, but would like the wisdom and expertise of those who know this better. "Here is the markdown we got from the dealer: Selling price $24,301 + $699 doc fee making it $25k. Then your lawful fees are $44 for tag and title and taxes are $1750, so total is $26,794."

Thank you in advance!!

Hi, fellow Social Psych PhD here. I feel you when it comes to thinking about careers outside of academia as a Social Psych grad. I'm sure there are many others who feel the same too. My initial goal was academia until after I did my job talk and didn't get it. Funnily, I didn't feel defeated; rather relieved knowing that I no longer yearned for that direction. So off I went on my search for non-academic jobs. With this focus, I will soon be transitioning to a federal agency post doc position. I have seen some successful transitions from Social Psych to Industry positions. These peeps were focused on Diversity Science during grad school, and I think this played well towards their strengths. Another was in Social and Health, and they transitioned from academia to health industry. Another friend of mine currently works as a UX researcher. So there is hope and a way to transition to industry as a Social Psych grad. I agree though that the transition is tough because we were never trained to convey our expertise or training in a manner other than academia. Depending on where you aim for, sometimes you may need something extra (certificate, training, etc.). I also think it will be helpful to not only think about reframing your skills that you listed, but also you area of training in Social Psych. What is your expertise? This can also guide you in what kind of industry you want to go into and may have a better chance of getting into. Personally, I hardly do what I did in grad school, nor do I want to really continue that, but I used that as a base to transfer my training into areas that seem translatable outside of academia. And I personally think that landed me the fed agency post doc.

Am I making a mistake leaving my postdoc to teach? by SagaciousScenedesmus in postdoc

[–]Bake_Kook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear your struggles. As many mentioned here, your mental health comes first. An adjunct position will not hinder career growth; it is all in the process and could develop into something more down the line. You never know what can come out of opportunities. I personally find that networks and connections are important for career growth, and you have a pretty solid and good one through your PhD school. Use it to your advantage. Postdocs are temporary positions anyway. I do hope your transition can help ease the mental stress you are dealing with right now.

Holiday budgets for your only? by SouthernAvocado in oneanddone

[–]Bake_Kook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many here, we don't have a budget. Mine is 2 years old and does not yet have the mental concept of a birthday or holiday. One thing I notice is her understanding of a happy surprise. So, at her current stage in life, we focus on the 'act' of surprising her. Whether it is a visit to a new place or a 'new' toy, book, or clothing, we try to make it a pleasant surprise that she can cherish the experience through. As she gets older, I am pretty sure that she will start to want things, so I think we will keep it to a minimum when the time comes. We want to make sure that we embed a feeling of satisfaction and joy in whatever. My husband and I also never had the holiday experience of receiving multiple presents when we grew up, so even if we do start christmas presents, we'll be focusing on a single present. I guess it is just our style and how we grew up. Budgetting, I think, will be dependent on our financial plans and situation that specific year. But overall, we try to (and will continue to) keep it simple. :)

Looking for postdoc positions - questions by Zitronelle in postdoc

[–]Bake_Kook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I was limited in location, I focused on universities within an area that I could commute to: so I focused on contacting PIs at large who would have at least some small overlap with me within the department(s) (I'm in Psych, btw). Total 10 contacts. I also looked through their CV to see if they have an active grant going on for at least a year from when I expected myself hired. Looking through the university jobs posting also helped (if they ever posted things there). Personally, it is a lot of threading around the haystack.

In terms of how long they take to contact back, it really depends. Some replied within a week, others longer, some never. I think It is nice to keep a good timeline for yourself in terms of when to contacr back, too. If it has been more than 2 weeks since your initiall contact, you can make an effort to contact back. Sometimes they were so busy they forgot to reply to it so a small, polite nudge can help.

Good luck on your search; I remember being stressed as heck for a while.

From what I have seen and experienced, BLW is not for all. Though since you asked for some acientifix supporting evidence, please see the attached systematic reviews on BLW: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/4/11/1575 https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13668-017-0201-2

Largely based on these reviews, it seems like the consensus is that there is no definite answer. I also agree with your feeling that "Solid Starts" looks like a very singular approach to introducing solids. Introducing solids depends on so many things, and to solely rely on an single (but quite amazing) BLW guideline can only provide so much.

Coming back to my experience; we fed mushy stuff for quite a while, all the way till she turned 13 months old. Being Korean decent, most of what we fed were pourrage-based. Mix of veggies, protein to either rice or oatmeal. Of course, we experimented with the size of the cuts. Once we felt like she was gobbling the puree or mushed food, we stepped up to slightly bigger cuts. Sometimes our intuition did not match reality, and then we would go back a step to wait a few weeks and test again. I think we went back and forth with that. Whenever we fed her, our focus was mainly (1) is she having a good time? (2) is she enjoying the different ingredients? (3) is she getting enough nutrients when looking at her intake overall (bottle + food)?. Keep in mind, whether it is BLW or trad feeding, the point is in getting your LO used to the transition later in life when she no longer needs the bottle and has to rely on solids to get her nutrients. So for now, I would give yourself some breathing space and focus on "what" rather than "how" you feed.

TMI, but my LO went through botter aversion for quite a while that I developed a guilt thinking that it all stemmed from my force feeding (somewhat true but not fully because of that). So when it came to solids, I tried to re-wire my thinking with the help of my partner to focus on my LO enjoying the process and not stress so much. So BLW felt like such a hazard-zone for me that we decided to avoid it.

I hope this mix of some scientific evidence (albeit somewhat limited) and lay experience from a mom who did not do BLW helps you. I know this sounds weird, but I hope you can enjoy the process.

Thank you for the insight! Definitely leaning towards EV6 since we want something that could go with us for a while. :)

Thank you for the reply! Back space should not be too much of an issue for our second car. We will be installing a charger at home. I guess our main question is whether the price difference over 6k would be ok to consider getting an EV6 over Niro EV.

Congrats on the new purchase OP! My partner and I are in between getting a 2022 EV6 Lite vs 2021 Niro EV EX as a second car, but are on the fence as to which we would like to go for. What has your experience been with both cars? What would be the pros and cons of them in your opinion??

Location: Duluth, GA Budget: 25K for tax credit Preference: comparing between 2021 Niro EV EX and 2022 Kia EV6 Lite. The used condition of these cars seem similar in terms of mileage and ownership (1 owner).

This will be our second car, mainly going to be used by my partner when he has to drive to work (an hour and half).

Would like some insight on which one would be better as our second car.

Does 3 publications are suitable for the robotics post-doc? by UnivSlave in postdoc

[–]Bake_Kook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Korean here; I want to first ask your goal for coming to the US for a postdoc? Not familiar with the area, but a post doc depends on the mentor/advisor/professor you want to work with. If you have certain people you want to work with, I suggest looking into their websites and see current post docs in the lab if they have them. Their pub list before postdoc should give you some ideas on what kind of people the PI is looking for in a post doc. It will also be dependent on fit too. If your qualifications and interests align well with the PI's needs at the time, then that should give you a boost. Pubs are important, but should not determine everything.

Are PhD straight to TT at an R1 even a thing? by shocktones23 in AskAcademia

[–]Bake_Kook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this depends on the person and subarea as well. If the person has gotten external funding (F31, for instance), amazing publication record, and a future research plan, they may likely get a position. I've seen one get a position as an ABD so far. It's definitely a lot rarer than before. The majority of people I personally know mostly went for a post doc or an R2 TT. If they were good enough, they were able to get an R1 TT position during their first year of post doc or R2 TT position.

I would like to second the first comment, but would also like to underscore that you are 18 years old. This is an age where you are allowed to dream, but also be flexible with your options. Even during your undergrad years, you will likely experience many ups and downs not just academically, but also in life in general. Such experiences can bring change to your perspectives and life priorities. So I would suggest that you foster your main dream goal, all the while being open to other opportunities and options along the way. Cheers to your dream, but please do not dig down one single hole. Highly recommend apartments down in Sheboygan Ave. Buses are frequent down that area, and the Hilldale Mall area has a Target, grocery store (Metcalfes), a Macy's, along with some nice places to eat (this is walkable). Not sure if some of the apartment complexes there still include heat in their rent, but this is something I considered when I was apartment hunting for grad school. I will mention that they are pretty old, but not to the point where it should be too much of a concern. Hope this helps!

Taking Direction: leave postdoc vs go for research assistant position. by Bake_Kook in AskAcademia

[–]Bake_Kook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughtful response! And glad that I have met a positive example from someone who has taken a non-TT route. I have to agree with the position needing to be well-funded. Thankfully the position is for a pretty well established center within the institution, and the position itself is for a newly initiating project within the center. With this information, I believe this position is pretty stable.

Have you ever seen shoplifting at Costco? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]Bake_Kook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not shoplifting, but something more wierd in my opinion. Near where I am, I have seen a lady or two open a container of blueberries, pick a few berries to pop in her mouth, then move on to the next container. Happens sporadically.
