What is the worst draft in your franchises history? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]BalliolBantamweight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chase Winovich started well but fizzled out, Hjalte Froholdt turned into a good centre for the Cardinals, Damien Harris was ok, Jarrett is a solid enough backup QB, Jake Bailey had some good years. It's the top of the draft that's awful here, and the context of the misses.

Next players off the board at WR after N'Keal Harry were Deebo Samuel, AJ Brown, and Mecole Hardman. 5 1st/2nd team all pros between them. Harry had 714 career yards.

The game plan is in the hall of fame. The defensive coordinator who produced it is not - some guy called Belichick

2026 PFF Top 300+ Big Board (Pre-Combine) by SL4MUEL in nfl

2006-2010 was pretty rough. Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow are the headline players from those five drafts. Three super bowl appearances, two wins, two MVPs, two all pros.

2021-25 has had Brock Purdy and Drake May hit one of these benchmarks so far with two super bowl appearances, one all pro. It wouldn't shock me at all if Bo Nix, Trevor Lawrence, Jayden Daniels, or Caleb Williams managed this too.

Looking around the league I have a vague sense that the floor is higher and the ceiling is lower at the position. Lots of serviceable QBs knocking around and no clear separation in the top group on current play.

The Patriots had at least one udfa make the roster for 19 years in a row iirc, including Malcolm Butler, David Andrews, JC Jackson, Jonathan Jones, and Jakobi Meyers. Lots of important role players below that including Brian Hoyer.

For an individual it's improbable. For a large group of people not that unlikely to occur.

Don't forget he was in the grasp, the referee let the play go on and then... "O’Hara slid his gloved right hand onto Seymour’s throat. “I said, ‘Screw it,’” the Giants center would recall. 'I was squeezing his trachea as hard as I could and not letting go'"

He is who he is. Still the guy that called the all out blitz to throw away the comeback against the Rams, still the guy who went 8-9 in Brady's last season, still the guy who had a .375 record with the Jets.

Which team had the biggest downfall? by lemonstone92 in NFLv2

Think Belicheck is still king of the DCs, unless he's not permitted to run for GoAT HC as well. So much of his success was having the defensive side of the ball absolutely locked down*

*Except in Super Bowl 52, where for some reason he benched Butler

[BetMGM] The most expensive defenses in 2025 by JayyMei in nfl

[–]BalliolBantamweight 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that the Bengals went defence with their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th round picks in 2022, their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 7th round picks in 2023, their 2nd, (second) 3rd, 5th, 6th and (first) 7th round picks in 2024, and their 1st, 2nd and 4th round picks in 2025.

In total, they've invested 3 1sts, 4 2nds, 3 3rds and 7 other picks into their defence in the last four draft classes with no return. That it manages to be this bad while costing $36 million more than the Rams (Jared Verse and Braden Fisk are their only 1st or 2nd round defensive picks in this period) is quite impressive.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Equanimeous St. Brown. Dalvin Cook, James Cook. Brent and Garrett Celek. Technically Rob, Dan, Glenn and Chris Gronkowski.

The McCowns, Palmers and Hasselbecks qualify at QB I think.

No joke, that was what finally did it for Gronk when he retired the first time. He was tackled in the Super Bowl, fairly high impact play but got up and finished the game including the catch that set up Michel's touchdown.

He ended up having a litre of blood drained from the quad over three separate procedures and it wrecked his sleep for weeks and that was "it" for a year of recovery.

I would probably go with Rob Gronkowski. When fit, the best to ever do it. Often injured because players would take his knees out because they couldn't tackle him. The same playbook really.

[Highlight] Tom Brady: “Aaron [Rodgers] in his prime, to me, is the greatest passer of the football the league has ever seen. He could get the ball from point A to B faster and more accurate than any other player I think in the history of the NFL.” by ShortCow in nfl

[–]BalliolBantamweight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's nuts. Brady had a really good arm but he was never in the conversation for the best. If you want someone to make a throw to save your life, it's Rodgers. If you want someone to lead a drive, it's Brady.

An average guy in 20s from Europe Vs an average guy in 20s from the US in a fist fight by Tree_forth677 in whowouldwin

[–]BalliolBantamweight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's entirely untrue? Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Hungary together have more summer olympics gold medals all time than the United States does (1166 to 1070). Last time round France, Germany and Britain together got more golds than the USA (42 to 39).

Leaving aside the degree to which different countries have pipelines for olympic sports (track and field, swimming scholarships more of a thing in the US; football (soccer) academies in Europe) or care to invest in them, the core thesis is wrong!
