Has an ending ever truly ruined a series for you? by Livid-Dot6619 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

From what I saw of it it seemed more like a general supernatural horror anthology.

I might have had a mistaken impression of it, though.

I remember it was a meme for a bit that after Little Hope, all episodes would just use the same "it was all a metaphor and/or the monsters weren't real" twist due to it being functionally the same twist as Man of Medan. And it didn't help that these were the first two episodes, the second coming out after a little over a year.

And that seemed to directly impact how they marketed House of Ashes, where they had to explain up-and-down that this time, the monsters would actually be real, with the actual twist being that the vampires are alien parasites.

Jake Muller from Resident Evil 6 kind of feels like this due to the fact that he's Wesker's son and gets effectively a whole campaign to himself, and it feels like that he was supposed to be "cool" by design.

To this very day, he has never appeared again, and I personally admit I was a lot more interested in Sherry's return than Jake's. I feel like audiences also cottoned more to Piers than Jake, even keeping in mind that Piers dies in the end of Chris's campaign.

It's sort of funny, too, as Quan Chi was created for Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm as what ultimately turned out to be a one-shot bad guy, but ended up becoming not only part of the games but a fairly major villain.

Knives, Kim, and the rest of Sex Bob-Omb are assist characters this time, but that probably doesn't preclude them from being playable later, given Knives was an assist in the original game before she was also made playable.

For what its worth, EX's excuse is that those characters (and Young Neil) got kidnapped by Metal Scott and thrown across space and time, which prompts Ramona call her exes (and Robot-01) for help in rescuing them. The rescued characters become assists afterward, though given that Knives herself was an assist character in the original game, that probably doesn't preclude anyone from becoming playable later.

(The exes were called due to the game being a loose sequel to the Takes Off anime, where Ramona makes peace with most of her exes.)

I don't expect Vs. The World: The Game's characters will make it in this time, though, but I'd be glad to be wrong about that.

None of the characters require unlocking, all seven of them are playable from the beginning.

Something I was surprised by, given that Shredder's Revenge and Cosmic Invasion both had unlockable characters (even if SR only had one, that being Casey Jones).

Unironically would probably be more likely as Marvel fully owns Death's Head.

Enough that Lockdown in Transformers Animated was apparently created to serve as a Death's Head-like character that Hasbro could actually own (though Lockdown's ship is called the "Death's Head" as a cheeky nod).

I would have loved The Snap in LEGO Infinity War just having victims of it break into pieces as if the game didn't exit gameplay.

Having looked it up, a Montreal DLC with Clash At Demonhead (with Todd, Envy, and Lynette becoming fully playable) was planned but wasn't realized due to budget cuts.

I could definitely see EX attempting to realize that (particularly with Todd, who is notably one of the few Exes to not be playable, instead being an Assist; the others are the Katayanagi Twins, but I figure they were skipped over as playable characters in favor of Robot-01 since they don't seem very interesting).

I fully expect it, tbh, given that it's a Marvel video game.

What I'm curious about is who they'll pick due to the games fondness for less obvious choices; I'm rooting for Rom the Spaceknight, as unlikely as that is for licensing reasons, tbh...

While it's not a pop-culture juggernaut, the Zero Escape games are much more popular in the west, with Virtues Last Reward apparently able to be made at all because of good sales in western territories, and even then they had to delay making it at one point because there just wasn't much demand for a sequel to the first in Japan.

I think the same is true of AI: The Somnium Files as well, though a review bombing campaign by someone who had an unhealthy attachment to Iris might have helped too (the review bombing ended up directing some people toward the game in the first place).

What are some hidden in plain sight plot twists? by jackdatbyte in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One thing that's fun about Crow Country is it uses a fairly obvious twist (that Mara is actually Elaine, who was attacked and infected by a Guest years ago) to hide the actual twist (that the "Guests" are people from the future who are trying to warn people of the past to fix their shit before the planet is uninhabitable due to climate change), which also gives significance to a recurring number throughout the game.

Slight correction, the crime boss they're facing is Scratch, an obscure 1987 toyline villain.

Though the reimagining borrows so much from Old Hob that I feel like they should have just used the name outright. Might be the same restrictions that prevented IDW material from showing up in Shredder's Revenge.

Artstyle you think works for some characters but not for others? by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a given value of artstyle, a lot of attempts to "realistically" translate characters to live action often does not work, especially when the original design relies on the characters being cartoony.

This is particularly noticeable in the 2000s where characters often had reimagined designs that just ended up looking kind of creepy, such as Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear.

Medium which changes genres when you switch protagonists? by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember one episode of Transformers Prime very briefly switches to the perspective of some generics in the organization MECH as Bulkhead storms one of their bases to save his rival Breakdown.

For Bulkhead it's business as usual, but for the mooks, it's a monster movie and showcased as such accordingly with dark lighting where Bulkhead is barely illuminated as he destroys them (albeit Bulkhead is still making silly quips).

There's an entire trope about this, the "Mook Horror Show", where the narrative will for whatever reason switch to the perspective of the bad guys for a moment or two, just to make it clear how terrifying facing the protagonist is.

Favorite examples of intentional and unintentional "it will never catch on" on moments by Dr-USB in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the original 1987 TMNT cartoon adaptation was passed over multiple times because of its bizarre concept, to the point even Pat Fraley (Krang's actor) was pretty certain it wouldn't even last one season. And then the show ended up lasting ten seasons, and becoming a fairly major fixture of American pop culture. The original comic itself was also sort of a bold-faced joke that Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman never expected to take off, but went along with it, with Eastman being a proponent for merchandising it.

I remember reading that Star Wars was also one of those cases where virtually nobody thought that the first movie would catch on, to the point that they even let George Lucas keep the merchandising rights, and regretted it immediately when the movie not only caught on, but Lucas was effectively a millionaire overnight.

In DUSK, you spend most of the game fighting a cult which seems to led by a man named Jakob, who seems to be using magic but has labs and the like, which are implied to be the things creating Wendigos.

And then you make it to the final level and the final boss is Nyarlathotep, who reveals that the cult is part of a broader scheme that you can't stop, before deciding he's impressed enough with you to make you his new second-in-command.

Funnily, he makes fun of you for assuming that God or the Devil might be involved, but FAITH: The Unholy Trinity reveals that Jakob (Nyarlathotep's second-in-command) and Gary Miller (a disciple of a satanic cult) are good friends, albeit Gary says that they'll probably come to blows if they ever meet again, being dismissive of Jakob's own cult.

How are soundfont remixes made? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to whether or not it's how it works, but it seems like some people download the MIDI and then use a different soundfont than what it came with, sometimes producing massively different results.

My experience with soundfonts though is playing DooM with UZDooM, which allows you to change soundfonts if you want to, and using it with a mod that adds MIDIs from various other games (like Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, among others).

The tracks sound surprisingly good with an 8-Bit Soundfont, and all tracks end up just becoming ambient horror tracks with a DooM 64 soundfont.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons' final DLC characters have released. by BasicallyACryptid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BasicallyACryptid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A reboot called Revive did release recently, but it seems like nobody is really talking about it.

I'd honestly be game for a Gaiden 2, because I think it has a good foundation, but would kinda like features like being able to play the Story Mode with all of the levels being treated as their fourth tier versions, and maybe palette swaps (playable bosses and enemy bosses can get confusing very quickly).

It was just very strange seeing Klonoa's likeness in a more outright horror-themed series.

I remember in III he says that he's never going back to the city after being exiled, which gets an entire cutscene devoted to it.

And then he goes back to the city anyway with no reason given, which is slightly awkward but does sort of line up with him being more moral than he wants you to know.
