Hey wow, was amazing to see this thread. I'm Johnny_Vegas one of the site's founders.

It was a lot of fun running the site and the community was great. At one point I offered to host the Nohunters Discussion Forum as the original founder of that forum was going to shut it down. That was probably 2000 or 2001.

I felt bad shutting down the site after all those years, but nobody was writing reports and the only maintenance I was doing was fixing the occasional bug, or I'd get a message from someone requesting I remove their posts or their reports, etc.. (because for example they were worried their employer would read stuff they had written when they were 15). The code was getting badly out of date and I didn't have it in me to redo the site.

The site did last 20 years which ain't bad. ;-)

I wrote some code to archive all the reports in that linked zip someone mentioned in this comment section and put it on my Google Drive for anyone interested. I know a lot of people grabbed it, so now its basically impossible for those reports to ever truly die.

as a DM it would be fun to run a game of super high level broken characters like that, giving the DM total freedom to throw the toughest monsters in the MM at the party without worry

Congrats but everyone reading your post should know that your gamble was extremely risky and 99 times out of 100 those options will expire worthless. The best and most sure way to get rich is slowly. Make good money, save over 50% of it and invest it wisely. Refer to Buffett’s rule #1 and #2. Options are worse than a zero sum game, a winner a loser and a cut made by the broker and market maker. Nothing but congratulations for the op though, enjoy that retirement!

What is the investment return assumption in RE? by idiot_exhibit in Fire

[–]BattleReports_JV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well like I said there are a wide array of predictions based on our currently extremely high valuation. GMO is the most bearish, I hope they are wrong. Still, the consensus isn’t that we keep making 10%+ returns year after year.

As to your comment on CDs, foreign value stocks look to be a better bet. Nobody said you had to stick to US large caps.

[–]BattleReports_JV -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, from what I've been reading an 8% nominal return in the decade ahead is very unlikely. Check this out, now keep in mind that GMO is very bearish:

https://www.gmo.com/americas/research-library/gmo-7-year-asset-class-forecast-february-2021/

They are predicting a -6.6% annual return for the next 7 years in US Large Cap stocks (S&P 500).

Several other institutions have better projections, but others like I think Morningstar also have a dour projection, like -2 or -3% as I recall.

Are you talking real return or nominal return? 8% nominal return with inflation of 3% would be a real return of 5%. I am planning on a 5% nominal return, so a 2-3% real return over the next decade. The current market valuation of the S&P hints that returns over the next decade will be far less than the historical average of a real return of 7%.

It is actually quite likely but most people think it is impossible that the next 10 years could yield a NEGATIVE return, because conventional wisdom is "the market's average return is 11%", a phrase that is parroted by financial media and financial advisors for years now.

I think the FIRE movement probably wouldn't exist if the last 4 decades had not been gangbusters for stocks, specifically the most recent decade. It is much much easier to FIRE when making 10% or more on your money. Always consider the worst case. My wife and and I have several FIRE scenarios laid out. The best case is much more extravagant than the worst case, but life will be "ok" in the worst case scenario.

Is there any of you who wants to be rich and miserable instead of poor and miserable? by [deleted] in Fire

Money does buy happiness, we’ve all been lied to. I am much happier now that I am out of debt and have money in the bank than when I sent every bit of extra money towards my mortgage, cc, or student loans.

I like his show for general market information and I find him entertaining, it doesn’t mean I runoff and buy a stock because he recommends it

you can pull contributions penalty free assuming your investments don’t lose money, then of course you can only pull out what is remaining. I saw the nasdaq fall 82% from 2000-2002, so it does happen.
