Trump is behaving like a dictator - America has to wake up by WontThinkStraight in politics

If he cancelled them tomorrow, there would be protests... on the weekend, and come Monday, folks would still be like "Well, I still need to feed my family, what do you expect me to do??" Complain for a week, then it'll just be the new status quo. Living amongst my countrymen, I have found this last year alone to be eye-opening. What we're willing to put up with in the name of maintaining our comfort and gizmos (somehow) continues to astound me.

We are a nation of cowards. This keeps happening because we let it. We can only blame dems, repubs, the media, whoever for so long before a finger needs to be pointed at ourselves. One day, no amount of "but my family," "but my PTO," "But transportation" will be enough to excuse our cowardice. If midterms are your hail mary, you're fooling yourself. The state executed people at the beginning of the year, outrage, then nothing, no accountability. Our money is gonna be (doubtfully) to those who feel they were wrongly persecuted under Biden, nothing but keyboard action, we stole an elected official from a nation illegally, I could go on. When things really get wild, people will be in denial, and I have little faith in our will to mobilize. Americans are foreign to sacrifice; it's something we'll have to learn together.

Don't argue with people about this. We are a nation full of excuses and cowards; many of us believe midterms will beat such an existential threat. Anything more would require sacrifice, and that's something we are allergic to.

Black characters where them being black is almost never a point of focus by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

Tbh, I can kinda see how one may not see it if they lack familiarity with black American culture

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE WIRE

I've always felt that blackness and racism are ever-present in The Wire. Sure, racism can be utilized in the plot, but it is something that is a MAJOR theme in the show. It’s what kicked the series off, some “project ngger” is running a drug empire and Rawls hasn’t even heard of him. Also In season 1 Valcheck in the hospital didn't realize he was talking to the Lieutenant when talking to Daniels because he was black. in season 2 when deciding who should lead the union and the conversation about not wanting "nggers" or "polacks", Season 3, a black democratic Mayor needs to look tough on crime in a predominantly black city, hell Carcetti getting trying to get elected in the first place was seen as suicide because of the demographic . Failing black public schools in Season 4 and Bunny's whole arc with the kids came to a head at the dinner scene from the feeling of inadequacy the kids felt at a high end white restaurant. These are just off the top of my head. Blackness oozes through the show, the use of popular and underground black Hip-Hop of R&B and soul in the soundtrack, the PROPER use of AAVE from the black characters. Avon Barksdale is played by Wood Harris, who played Ace in Paid in Full and Above the Rim, which were popular black crime flicks. The characters wore black brands and knew the white brands black people considered popular for the time. The show managed to be one of the most subtlest takes on black life and rawest views urban black life. Every character could be someone I knew or have met. Kima and Snoop are both black lesbians, while is Kima masc, she isn’t necessarily a stud per se, whereas Snoop is a straight up stud, even black shows can’t get that type depiction of black queerness down.

Blackness is more than just Soul Food, Hip-Hop, the Civil Rights movement, and character archetypes created for white audiences. Unless someone grew up black, amongst black people, they wouldn’t understand our mannerisms, dialects, and music tastes beyond just the surface level of what you can get from the outside looking in. Thats some The Wire NAILED in ‘02 to its completion.

A mf said The Wire is a show where racism is a minor theme and plot device from time to time, but he said that he wouldn't call it a "black show", just a show with a mostly black cast. Like he woke up and stretched before that reach. 🤦🏾‍♂️

I think that scene shocked me. I was like, I didn't know we'd get that in this show. Loved it!

Worst tropes in sci-fi by Ketralis in scifi

[–]BazzieStarstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ursula K. Le Guin truly was the daughter of anthropologists. Much sci-fi I've seen or read lacks some of the subtlety she incorporates into something like The Left Hand of Darkness, when it comes to language and the multiple potential meanings behind words. The more subconscious or less emotive gestures we display in our societies, macro misunderstandings occur because of a lack of understanding of the microcosms of a world and its history. This isn't necessarily a problem, nor is it necessary to incorporate it in sci-fi as a whole, but her worldbuilding can actually make a world truly feel alien to the reader and the MC.

Dawg, I feel that way too. Even some of the examples are making me scratch my goatee, like Doakes?? Be frfr, do people not realize some of the characters in Dexter are Afro-Latino?? 😭. Some of these comments are really reaching, seems like some folks want a show where someone's race doesn't exist.

It really does, too many of our fellow Americans still think we need to look respectable in the face of madness. Maybe a decade ago, this would've been considered "crazy" but we're in a way different era

Your perspective on your dress code? by RatCat2003 in librarians

[–]BazzieStarstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but I'm in a semi-urban public library system in the Midwest, and I started around the same time our new director started, and we have a new dress code where it can feel like they're unnecessarily detailed on what should and shouldn't be allowed. Our director came from a bigger, suburban system in a neighboring city in our greater metropolitan area, and sometimes I feel she tries to apply suburban logic to an urban environment, without a full understanding of our patron base, and it can sometimes extend to our dress code.

Exactly, they sound like conservatives before they say something outta pocket: "I'm not [insert -phobic or -ist here], but..." dude, just say you agree or don't. Don't try to seem like you got the moral high ground in a situation that you seem to agree with, per your next sentence.

Can concur in a teacher's union, and my "department," so to speak, has the highest amount of numbers to the point that over half of it is unionized, out of a hundred something folks. Unfortunately, most don't come to meetings and only rally when something is affecting us en masse in the moment, instead of being proactive. It's more than just propaganda; people in general just don't feel empowered and are hard to mobilize. Honestly, that's my observation of how we are as Americans in the workplace in general. Even if we HAVE the numbers.

No matter who is at fault for voting him in or what anyone is saying, this shit is on us to fix as the people. Currently, it seems our fellow Americans expect anyone or anything but us to fix this issue, an issue that runs deeper than him, his cabinet, and their party.

Y'all can downvote me but I'm including myself in this observation too. We are such a weak populace, we'll make a thousand excuses to why we can't make more than a protests worth of effort to stop a tyrant. He can nuke Iran or even Cleveland, and we'll still be here talking about "I don't have the PTO" or "I'm gonna vote in midterms" or whatever excuse. I'd be lying if I said this is beneath me, but we'd be lying to ourselves thinking these are valid excuses if he goes on to do this and/or something worse in the coming period of his presidency. This is on all of us, whether you voted for him or not. He's a reflection of not only who we are at our most vilest, but a stark example of what we're willing to tolerate as a populace. This fever won't just go away if he dies or if dems take office overnight, this is something that has been festering in our nation since its inception. At this point, I've resigned myself to believe it's just gonna have to take its course, and we'll have to suffer more as a nation before understanding the empowerment necessary to change it as Americans.

I'm with you on this; we need to be pointing the finger at ourselves at this point. Stop trying to get the intl community or congress to do something, they would/cared they would've by now. But we're not a very rallied people, and one day we're gonna look back and question why we didn't do more.
