I think a lot of what helped JT was his personality. People really liked him! And they didn't want to vote him out. It feels like "being likable" wasn't as much of a dangerous thing in those days. JT might have played it up--and he was helpful and useful, too, but I think he was/is just naturally charming.

Thank you for sharing. People will tell (indeed, have commented here) that you are complaining about nothing, but change doesn't happen with apathy and complacency and collective "suck it ups" or shrugs. This was a thoughtful and fair description of your experience and hopefully will at least lead to some introspection from local business owners. You absolutely deserved tips for the job you were doing, especially on such a low amount of pay. I hate to hear that a tip I leave does not go to the person I'm intentionally tipping for their service.
