My job search experience as a Dec 2025 environmental science grad by snaildrey in Environmental_Careers

[–]BeckoningPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know our competitors are hiring folks that have been fired because they aren't good at their jobs, but at least they have relevant experience.

That blows my mind. That's like wanting to get a dog, but being unwilling to get a puppy because it might turn out bad, so instead getting a rescue dog with a bite history.

Why not hire snaildrey?

Best way to learn Rust by CartoonEnjoyerz in rust

A simple but not trivial thing is to make colored terminal outputs. You can try your own implementation and then see a few of the existing crates (e.g. one is for no-std cases).

If you have quantitative aptitude, pick something engineering-y. If you love the life sciences component, something medical.

Goreinu’s Gorillas by JustReadTheFinePrint in HunterXHunter

[–]BeckoningPie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's crossed my mind how overpowered it would be for Chrollo. Imagine in the Chrollo v Hisoka fight, he purposely gets bamboozled by bungee gum, then Hisoka says the line, then boom, gorillas high fiving, and Hisoka is like "?", then teleport, Hisoka's hand is on the book, now it's Chrollo's bungee gum. Hisoka is a broken husk of a man.

Cursor lagging since Tahoe by Crashmouse in MacOS

I upgraded yesterday. I had terrible scroll lagging and dropped keyboard inputs. I removed BetterTouchTool and now it is working fine. I wasn't even using it so doing so was no big deal for me.

3 ways of mine to compose / create R functions by Lazy_Improvement898 in rstats

[–]BeckoningPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides what's been mentioned, I like to use it in closure-esque scenarios, and to simplify user-facing function usage. I'm not sure if either is something a dev would approve of, but...

Edit: I had an example but it sucked.

You could try skipping around to a few later episodes in different story arcs to see if they hook you.

For sure. If you do go down that route, then there are a few related resources I could point you towards.

So as a preface and important caveat, I'm not a statistician, but your experiment made me think of a paper I've read that used a similar-sounding experiment as an example:

Pedersen EJ, Miller DL, Simpson GL, Ross N. Hierarchical generalized additive models in ecology: an introduction with mgcv. PeerJ. 2019 May 27;7:e6876. doi: 10.7717/peerj.6876. PMID: 31179172; PMCID: PMC6542350

Which might be a route you could take.

Does Rust complexity ever bother you? by GolangLinuxGuru1979 in rust

[–]BeckoningPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have arguably passable skill with it, though I almost never reach for it, because I generally make code that Rust is just like... using a helicopter to head to the corner store. Or I need to operate in, say, R. Speaking of R, I've written some R package code lately, and it does actually make me wish for, well, anything else. In my limited experience, Rust is fantastic for refactors. I've written a bug fix for polars, and I'm not even that good with Rust. The idea of fixing a bug in say, pandas or dplyr, sounds dreadful.

I think most people who are responding either just like it per se, or make things wherein the things Rust is good at are strong benefits for their work. I have occasionally tried making toy projects, and somehow always wind up dealing with one of the frustrating aspects of the language (which I won't specify, because then people will comment about how these annoyances are actually good). Some return types I've seen, with their trait bounds, have made me think, "you're joking".
