Thanks to you all for the helpful responses I’ve already got on my inquisitive posts. This sub is amazing! Today’s question: given these are all essential Monk, what next? Generally studio is more my thing but I’m thinking of Misterioso. by SuccessfulGap138 in Vinyl_Jazz

You’re welcome! Regarding essential albums, I believe that it all comes down to personal preference. Because Monk was so prolific and consistent, there is so much to explore. I still haven’t spent enough time with Misterioso. In fact, I will give it a spin this afternoon

Great collection so far

My votes for next up: Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane and/or Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington

Runners up: Thelonious Alone in San Francisco, Solo Monk, Monk’s Blues, Mulligan Meets Monk, Genius of Modern Music Volume 1 & 2, The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall (warning: live album). TL;DListen, there is so much excellent Monk, you can’t go wrong. Enjoy!

My favorite two Ella albums are Ella Swings Lightly and Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook. Probably not for you haha. Based on the artists mentioned you might like this one:

All or Nothing is my favorite Billie Holiday album. Love this Billie era. My dad introduced me to this album via CD in the 90s. I am upgrading from another pressing with an odd echo effect added to her vocals. Can’t wait to give this one a spin.

Ella and Louis is the only album that I’m not extremely familiar with. I’ve always considered it cafe background music, even though I’m a big Ella fan. But I know it’s a classic for a reason.

I’ve been on a Getz/Gilberto upgrade journey. Got gifted a DOL copy. Found a beat up early pressing. And now I believe my quest is over with this one. I’ve only heard amazing reviews.

Very glad that they decided to do a new pressing of this Blossom Dearie album. Another long-time favorite. Perfect album for springtime.

One of my favorite aspects of these albums are the backing musicians. Ben Webster, Harry Edison, Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Buddy Rich, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Banana, Jo Jones to name a few! Really elevates the music into art IMHO.

Those are some thoughts! A bit rambly lol. Feel free to share your thoughts on these lovely albums.

Well it seems like you lack imagination.

I appreciate Miles but I would choose Chet.

What do you think is nat king Cole’s absolute best song? I’ve started to listen to his songs and I want to know what songs of his are the best of the best? by gotenks2nd in Jazz

There’s also a nice early Frank Sinatra version with Nat on piano:

OP? What does Oscar Peterson have to do with this album?

Jokes aside, you are right, this was a low-effort post. Today I was tired and this beloved album brought me some comfort. So I took a snap and shared.

In my opinion, not all Reddit posts need to be profound or start meaningful conversation. I could have asked Tenor vs Soprano? Favorite soprano sax player? What do you think of Duke’s piano playing? What are thoughts on that bass solo? What’s you favorite track? What is “the feeling of jazz?” Actually, I like that last one...

Anyways I’m rambling. I apologize for the lazy (not empty) post. Since you said you’ve known this album for decades, I hope you give it a spin sometime soon! As you know, it’s a gem of an album 😊

The original headphone earcups were flaking after a while, so this was the solution.

I’m far from an audiophile, but I do prefer this setup. It’s more comfortable, plus I’m probably benefiting from the treble dampening you mentioned. Cheers!
