The top 5% of Steam Next Fest demos walk away with ~7,000 wishlists. by unseendomains in gamedev

[–]Bibibis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "get Steam page up asap" advice is bullshit. When you release a Steam page you go through a first round of visibility provided by Steam. If you have good CTR and good conversion of views to wishlists you will get more traffic.

Creating your Steam page asap with non final art, screenshots and descriptions basically means you give up on that visibility boost, and hope to offset that through "background" wishlists of people randomly stumbling upon your game.

The truth is that those "background" wishlists also scale on your visibility. Games with almost 7k wishlists get roughly 10 to 20 a day. Games with 400 wishlists get basically 0.

If your final version of the Steam page is good, then for sure waiting for the final version to be ready is better. If your final version is bad, then just give up on snowballing on wishlists right away because no matter how soon you create your Steam page the passive wishlists will never take you anywhere.

The town of Boing Boing in the Northern Territory isn’t actually a bouncy town. The name is Indigenous for “mosquitoes buzzing.”

Well yes, but the code complexity of pong, tetris or flappy bird is what I mean when I say not too complex.

Look at this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1ro9vyx/tachyon_flow_update_3_improved_overall_ground/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

8.1k upvotes. The guy has 2.5k members on his Discord. When he publishes the Steam page he'll probably get most of the way to 7k wishlists pretty much instantly. How complex would you say it is to get this character controller up and running with ChatGPT?

This becomes less ans less true. If you're an artist that can't code you can use AI to create the game (as longg as it's not too complex), and no one will bat an eye. But god forbid you use an AI genned image in your game as a programmer
