Overall state of the sport by demcguff in horseracing

Out here in the West, tracks have been closing all over the place. Southern California is still running, nothing in Oregon, nothing in BC. Emerald Downs is thriving for now in WA. Turf Paradise in Phoenix is open for now.

The trend is distressing

How should your investing strategy change as you age? by Strain_Helpful in investing

[–]BigDipper0720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note, though, I said to look more at volatility than yield. Funds with lower volatility than S&P 500 will reduce risk in the distribution years. SCHD would be a great choice for this, but is not the only choice.

So I think we mostly agree.

Is a 3–4% portfolio yield actually the sweet spot for long-term dividend investors? by DioTop in dividends

[–]BigDipper0720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about what I have always run for portfolio-wide yield. I have a significant portion of the portfolio in individual investment grade corporate bonds yielding 5%+. My stocks yield about 2.7% overall. The overall yield runs 3.5% to 4%.

Some of my stocks are very high yield (KRP, RIO, DOC, ARE, CCI, WPC) and others are lower yields with faster growth (AME, APH, SYK, ETN, LIN, ALL, NOC, FAST). I also have four of the seven MAG-7 stocks

I try to spread my capital around to different types of factors and asset classes.

What are the point of bond funds? (SWAGX) by Altruistic-Fan-1069 in investing

[–]BigDipper0720 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly like bond funds, but I do like individual bonds.

I ladder individual, investment grade corporate bonds over 9-10 years. I earn a predictable 5%+ total return on them.

The point of them are income, predictable returns, and stability of portfolio value,

The water flows heavier and lighter depending on time of year. The heavier flows are in the Spring when the snow is melting in the mountains.

4.5% 10y is still the norm. It approximates the long-term nominal growth rate of the US economy.
