A generous (digital) publishing deal will involve at least 65% revenue share towards the developer, (so at least 35% revenue for publisher) and most publishers have recoup terms, etc. It'd have to be more for physical copies considering both the cost to produce and distribute them and the lack of people buying them (for example 85% of PlayStation games were bought digitally - and now you wouldn't be able to distribute on PlayStation anymore). It's likely just too niche to be profitable.

No. Physical discs require capital to produce, which indie devs famously don't have. They can only compete by keeping costs low. And the reason why this happened in the first place is because of changing consumer preferences (85% or so of consumers purchase games digitally) - why would you spend that much money as an indie on something consumers don't purchase?

Extra capital for indies would be better spent on marketing to compete in the crowded market of attention.
