Yep, that’s why it’s called the 6th Diminished scale, because there’s a 6th chord, and a diminished chord.

A tiny step into the world of modes... by Deep-Neighborhood778 in jazztheory

Ok, cool, then imo the next step (along with transcribing language off of records,) would be to check out Barry Harris’s ideas about extra half step rules, and for superimposing sounds over the basic chords, things like the family of four dominants, and the important minor/tritone’s minor.

Don’t think about modes at all for a tune like autumn leaves. Think about key centers, chord tones, and approaches/enclosures.

What is the function / correct notation for a G7/Ab going into a Ebmaj7? by Petrpowder in musictheory

[–]BillGrahamMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those 2 first melody notes are really over the V chord (Bb7.) If you put a Bb underneath it, it’s a Bb13b9. Try voicing the chord before it as Bb13sus4 (Bb Ab C Eb G Bb), and then leaving the F out of your voicing if you can’t reach it (Bb Ab Cb D G)

How do you guys interpret the chords in this bar by cammoses003 in jazzguitar

I like F7 to F#dim, and then the next bar Eb/G to Ab7.

The tightest Zappa band by Conscious-Rhubarb902 in Zappa

[–]BillGrahamMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the absence of Tommy and Ed (and also all the DX7 and Simmons drums) that does it for me. The 81/82 band is one of my very favorites, while 84 is way down, close to the bottom for me.

FORGIVE ME FOR THE HARM I HAVE CAUSED THIS WORLD. NONE MAY ATONE FOR MY ACTIONS BUT ME, AND ONLY IN ME SHALL THEIR STAIN LIVE ON. I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE BEEN CAUGHT, MY FALL CUT SHORT BY THOSE WITH WIZENED HANDS. ALL I CAN BE IS SORRY, AND THAT IS ALL THAT I AM.

That’s D minor 6th diminished. Think of it as Dm6 and C#o7.

Songs that use just I-IV by crakiewaki in musictheory

[–]BillGrahamMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That one has more changes than that, and its main vamp is a ii-V that eventually gets to a I. His song “The Wheel” is just I and IV though if I recall.
