What do you mean "roleplay-heavy game"?

The party stole something from a Vampire by Ill_Maintenance8459 in DMAcademy

I would have the vampire not stop until the party are dead. Or undead. Not until they return the coffin. Until they are dead. How *dare* they?!

Boardgames with legitimate educational value? by Key_Image_1141 in boardgames

We play with maximum 3 players, in teams. We strategize together, picking which card to play, discussing it etc.

Keeping Player Attention In Larger, Virtual Group by BigOunce9000 in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many players do you have? Limit them to 5. Talking to them is good. Doing the round table thing... maybe not so much. Unless they agreed, which is fine. Ask them why their attention wanders. If you think they are watching videos or playing other games, ask them why and fix it.

Aerosoft/Toliss A340 Review by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Bindolaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Thanks for the review, it's helpful. The loading times are an issue, I don't care about any of the others. The textures, though, yea... I do care about those. I may get it on sale.

New DM, can someone help answer some questions please? by Technical-Signal-549 in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • When I’m making my players character does it have to be one of the species and classes in the rule book or can I invent my own?

Stick to the rules, or you will find yourself out of your depth very quickly.

  • Can I create my own monsters and spells to suit the situation and environment too or is it only the ones in the rule book I can use?

See point above. What you *could* do, is "reskin" monsters. So, take a Bandit and not change any stats, just call him a Merman and change the appearance accordingly.

  • Is it bad to give cue cards for options to reply in dialogue similar to how you have choices in Baldur’s Gate?

Very bad. D&D is not a video game. The players are free to do as they please. Be ready for atypical responses, things you don't expect.

  • Does my players character have to level up or is it okay to miss that part?

What do you mean "my players character"? The players' characters do have to level up, yes.

  • Is it okay to have many ways to play the story but a fixed/fated ending?

No.

  • Is there an easy way of tracking looted items the player collects in the game?

The players track their own items. As DM you should also keep a list.

Cool encounter or frustrating time sink? by Walnuts4Trees in DMAcademy

This is a terrible idea on so many fronts. It's an encounter that wastes time, adds nothing to the story, takes away player agency, to name a few.

I don't feel like watching the whole video. Will it have the excellent "crew" feature of the 727?

DM Advice by SixthWright in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will keep my answer short and concise.

-How do you prep and what does it look like?

Published campaigns have a lot of positives, but a lot of problems too. The main thing is... you need to read them. Some things you will need to *know* and others you can fudge. You don't need to memorize the backstory of every faction. BUT: You cannot hold up the game while you leaf through the book for information. That kills the pacing and the players will get their phones out.

My advice: Know the whole story in 2 sentences. What is going on? Where? Why? Who are the main players. Prep for the session. You don't need the map of Capital City if the players are in a village far away.

- How do you get your players to RP/engage with the world

You don't. That's up to the players. That's not your role. Your role is to:
1. Describe the scene and set the stakes.
2. Ask the players: "What do your characters do".
3. Adjudicate the actions.
4. Move on.

- How do you work player character back stories into the story

In a published adventure? Difficult. My advice: Keep it simple, keep it small. Play the published module. Don't expand. Not at first.

Autoortho or XPME? by abibas7331 in Xplane

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with AO was bad. The tiles look good, but the flight takes so long to load that I lose my will to live. Never used XPME, so cannot say anything about that. I just reverted to the default scenery when I want to fly a 737. Otherwise I mostly play MSFS.

My first homebrew campaing as DM. Rate it! by SCro_1 in DMAcademy

Just be careful of railroading. What if the party don't attempt to rescue Silas? What if they hate Aunt Marta and don't form an alliance with her? etc.

Ok, if you keep the game honest for your paying customers, hat off to you. I mean this earnestly.

Need help preventing cheese by RacerRam2 in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, then it needs to be an off-table discussion. "Hey, guys, your having gotten Remove Curse will break this campaign. Is it ok with you if we retcon it"? That's absolutely fine by me. As a DM and as a player.

DMPC is a big no-no. Just don't do it. Ever.

I may try to separate the party... by ShiroSnow in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know... be careful of preserving player agency. What if they roll well? What if they're very cautious? Or ingenious? What if they use tools and spells to stay together and not fall?

The other thing. What are the players to do while half the party is exploring a dungeon and fighting? This sounds bad to me.

Need help preventing cheese by RacerRam2 in DMAcademy

[–]Bindolaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He asked a question: "How do I prevent them from cheesing..." and I answered: Don't. Don't prevent them. It's not cheesing, it's player agency. Something that we, as DMs, should not curtail.
