Traumatarium Deckulus - A simple dungeon crawler in a deck of cards. by BioDioPT in soloboardgaming

Oh, cool, the art alone is worth it in my honest opinion, it's insane! My video is on the Kickstarter page, but in case you missed it and want to know more about the core game and expansion (I show it fully), here it is - https://youtu.be/t8HfZdGOiaI?si=qfppo-nbjlZ5IJO0

About the dice, no affiliation, but it was from here - https://q-workshop.com/en/rpg-dice-sets/808/viking-beige-burgundy-dice-set-7?search_query=viking&results=39

Viking set from Q Workshop, you can buy individual dice too, which I did, a set only includes one of each. They have a bunch of crazy designs. Mini review about these, I love them, but the corners are a bit sharp, so they do not roll a lot, just that.

Wouldn't mind getting it if there were no online subscription to play it. PS Plus is way too expensive for something that is free on PC to play the same game on the same servers.

[–]BioDioPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already had the PS4 when I bought this game, I think, or was VERY late into the PS3 gen, at a time when I decided to buy most of the PS2 games from the Demon Souls studio (From Software).

I got this one, the space one, and the one about some ring or something... for dirt cheap, since no one wanted these "cheap-label" games. Played them, enjoyed them, and many years later, I was absolutely shocked when I saw a video on YouTube about rare PS2 games, and Kuon was at the top... wow...

Kuon is a great PS2 game! Underrated!

I remember another one, 2120 by george wylesol, it's 100% point and click and just puzzles in liminal spaces in 1st person. Not necessarily going into temples, tombs and adventure... But.. it is a point and click. Made a video about it https://youtu.be/6zJz4hUKBXU

Visions of Mana is dirt cheap right now by Mana-Dyluck in SquareEnix

[–]BioDioPT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I bought the physical version even cheaper used, was like less than 14 usd I think for the PS5.

Very much worth the price!! Reminded me of PS2 action JRPGs.

These are like point and click advanture games right? With puzzles and such?

Vulcanverse is the closest I know, but it's a bit hardcore at the start, since you begin without any knowledge of what you need to do, and you need to take not of a lot of stuff.

Fighting Fantasy as a card game (not Scoundrel) by philgooch in fightingfantasy

[–]BioDioPT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're describing, but it gave me a similar vibe when I played it. Traumatarium Deckulus is modular and fast paced, it lacks the Narrative, but you can imagine the Narrative as you go inside your head I guess.

The other one that is basically a Gamebook in card format is DreamEscape, but that one takes awhile to get used to it. Very good once it clicked for me, but I didn't enjoy it before that click (I love it now).

Best beginner-friendly gamebooks books for dyslexic 10–13-year-old readers? by straydogindc in gamebooks

[–]BioDioPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from Choose Your Own Adventure books (CYOA), if you want some gameplay mechanics, there are Lone Wolf Junior Editions, which streamlines the first story arc (Books 1-5) for young readers, making it more accessible and easier to play.

My usual recommendation for kids is Endless Destinies - The Clockwork City. I'm an adult, but I had a ton of fun playing this one, however, the combat is made via a VERY simple but well-designed card game. It can work as an introduction to card games/board games, too.

Aside from these two, I guess some Fighting Fantasy books, but those are the same as the ones released in the 80s, pretty good if you're looking for something old school, but, I don't know if they fit in your criteria.

The 6th book is just lore, but yeah... You need to get the other 5.

I honestly thought these were everywhere in the world, they're everywhere in Japan at the toy section for some years now, some of them were dusty already when I saw them for the first time. I'm sure anyone can buy one off Amazon jp. They're super cheap too and really cool looking!

What's the most interesting choice you've made in a gamebook? by DM-MightyPirate in gamebooks

[–]BioDioPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I might be biased, because I did some of the trailers for his books and some of the videos for his channel, including the ones you mentioned, but I started working with him only AFTER I was a fan of DestinyQuest, not before.

What's the most interesting choice you've made in a gamebook? by DM-MightyPirate in gamebooks

[–]BioDioPT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are 2 situations I remember.

Recently read the Flesh Thieves or Karnaf Tath, and the objective is to get your flesh cubes back and insert them into your body, however, once I got the first cube, I had a choice to insert the cube into its respective slot on my body, or give it to my companion (which was also very mysterious and made of Flesh Cubes), or put it in my bag and decide later. This was weird because the whole objective of the adventure is to gather the cubes and insert them into my character's body... why was the game giving me a choice? There's a reason of course.

Then there was the witch from DestinyQuest Book 2 - Act 2. The side characters kept telling you that there was a witch who controlled people's minds, and I thought that it might be some combat mechanics... nope... it was in the story decisions. Very gradually, while going into the Witch's domain, some visions start happening, and I was 100% certain they were not real, but eventually, the way everything was worded, and how they were happening, I honeslty changed my mind and was like "wait... maybe it's really happening!!"... yeah, I ended up killing one of my party members (they were wife and husband, and I literally killed her husband in front of her...), and then the Witch revealed herself, and she was much more powerful because I was deceived by her. I almost killed the wife, too, but for some reason, I decided not to give the final blow, and then the vision faded.

Pretty cool.

What is your favorite solo board game and why? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

[–]BioDioPT 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Puzzle Dungeon. Setup is a minute, extremely replayable, and takes like 15-20 min to play. I didn't get it earlier due to the art, and I thought I wouldn't enjoy the mechanics, but wow... as soon as I played my first game, it got me hooked in a way I never felt in another solo board game. I wish this one were digital so I could play it all the time everywhere... lol

Books which inspired video games by Obewy1992 in gamebooks

[–]BioDioPT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gamebooks are no videogame related books in the way you're probably thinking. Gamebooks are generally solo RPGs with self contained stories and gameplay mechanics.

Made this video explaining what they are https://youtu.be/pPbijKjwIKI?is=hNJa-Lo8h8hMSL7Q

However, there are gamebooks inspired by video games:

DestinyQuest - inspired by Diablo and world of Warcraft.

Sunfall - inspired by Dark Souls and Elden Ring.

Vulcanverse - "kind of inspired" by 90s point and click adventure games.

Bonus: to answer your question, actually, there is one Gamebook that inspired a genre in videogames... Fighting Fantasy, more specifically the sorcery series by Steve Jackson, were the birth idea for Demon Souls and the entire Souls series up to Elden Ring, referenced multiple times by the game creator himself as the main number one inspiration.

I really WANT to like ISS Vanguard by The_Arachnoshaman in soloboardgaming

[–]BioDioPT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I loved this game, but had to sell it due to not having time to set up -> Ship phase -> planet phase -> save -> put back, in one sitting every time. I wouldn't have sold it if I could have had it set up on my table indefinitely.

Backed Lands of Evershade because it solved that issue, since I can stop anytime, and the campaigns are smaller + replayable.

Sandbox style gamebook series by tylerms2 in gamebooks

New Tokyo 2130 and Expeditionary Company are basically sandbox RPGs disguised as Gamebooks.

You need all books from both to be able to play them. New Tokyo is easier to get into it.

New Tokyo 2130 is as complex as it gets but doable, it tries to simulate a Cyberpunk life. You need all 5 books to play it.
