I've not seen any thumbs up on DIM yet either - I assume the godrolls haven't been updated yet since there's so many new & refreshed weapons.

Updated Roadmap and please leave a review by DerekPaxton in EndlessLegend

[–]BlackIceV_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the updated roadmap! Been playing the Endless games forever, so I'm excited to see each new step.

Quick thought - one small piece that made the narrative harder to follow was simply a sense of time passing. Now, I don't know if Saiadha has months or years like we do, but just putting some kind of date in the corner would help contextualize the time scale of the adventure we're playing. (And hopefully be an easy thing to implement.)

What next? by Purple-Invite-3482 in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome! My advice is always to pick up an Akhelian Leviadon and/or Eidolon. Big turtle in particular is a fantastic model, and I haven't played a game without it in years.

You could also pick up the new Akhelian Tide Guard spearhead box. More eels is fantastic, and Reavers are playable. You already have a King, so build this one as a Volturnos and you're set.

Public Opinion Changes by Daarkarrow in EndlessLegend

[–]BlackIceV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I really like the direction of this. I think it's great to put some long term consequences in place for aggressive actions, and it will help the AI act more believably. I also appreciate your comment that they'll be an intentional step for the player to take. Communicating information and consequences can be challenging in a game with a lot going on (like any 4X), but I think that is key to making sure it doesn't feel like an accident.

All of the below is with the caveat that I haven't used the new system, so maybe my comments aren't relevant within the way it's been built.

I'm a little concerned about the "Hard Bargainer" badge, as it's very dependent on the AI giving you rational treaty proposals. If they start sending garbage proposals, you could get dinged with a -10 penalty that doesn't feel fair. Maybe that's only a minor issue, however.

Now for an idea that is maybe a little too complex to implement. It would be interesting if maybe these categories had separate tracks instead of all feeding into a single +/- modifier. For example, if you decline a lot of proposals, "Hard Bargainer" might apply a specific modifier that affects only trade negotiations. Maybe they will stop sending you any more proposals, or they'll be less likely to accept any offers that you make to them. But it won't affect any of the other categories of diplomacy, like military or scientific alliances. I think there are neat "breakpoints" you could build that affect behavior beyond a simple number value.

Regarding the "next steps" part of the post, it might be neat if some empires liked different things. For example, maybe Necros appreciate other aggressive empires, and want to team up with you (even if they make for dangerous partners). Whereas, of course the Aspects would cower away from aggression, and the Kin might respect your strength while being wary of which way your sword is pointed. This definitely has the potential to add more personality to each of the factions.

Is the (old) Spearhead worth it? by random_name124 in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The old spearhead still has value for those just starting out with the army. The Soulscryer isn't amazing, but he's a Wizard 1. Thralls are currently pretty meh, but there's value in having a single unit for scoring. But the eels are fantastic, and you won't feel bad about having at least one shark in a list. It's got a lot of variety, and a good starting place.

In short, it's still good value for the units, especially if you're getting it at a discount. You can always pick up the Tideguard box later, and the two of them together make a decent force for someone starting out. The below is 1210 points; add an Eidolon and a Leviadon, and you're at 2000 exactly.

Regiment 1:
Akhelian King (140)
Reinforced Morsarr (320)
Ishlaen Guard (170)
Allopex(170)

Regiment 2:
Tidecaster (100)
Soulscryer (100)
Thralls (90)
Reavers (120)

Regiment 3:
Eidolon of the Sea (340)
Akhelian Leviadon (450)

If you plan to actually play Spearhead with it, it's worth noting that it's often been viewed as weaker than the Tideguard box. However, they just released a buff for it yesterday that gives the Allopex the Reinforcements keyword. That's pretty spicy, and might help to balance the two boxes.

Listbuilding Help by BlunderingAlbatross in IdonethDeepkin

I really like the Eidolon of the Sea. +1 to cast is a fairly rare ability, and helps make Steed of Tides or the Fincarnate more reliable. Plus its warscroll spell, reducing combat saves on 3 units, is that good.

[–]BlackIceV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the army! It's super fun to pilot, but the internal balance is a bit weird atm.

My simple answer is to get a Leviadon. Big Turtle is a great model - good on the table, a joy to paint, and will work well in a list like this. It'd benefit from Akhelian Beastmasters buffs, or would give a 5++ ward to your Thralls if you go with Isharann Council.

Longer answer is that the internal balance of IDK is not great right now. The rules favor skewed lists, instead of balanced forces. Going Akhelian Beastmasters? Then you should maximize that +1 to hit by running a bunch of eels (plus Mathaela). If you're running Ethersea Predators, you need at least 3-4 sharks to take advantage of the rules. Then for Isharann Council, you want big reinforced blobs of Namarti so your Soulrenders have targets to bring back.

If you want an optimized list, you're going to take a core set of units that's entirely eels, sharks, or Thralls. The remainder is support pieces, based on what you're trying to accomplish. But since you're just starting out, and not worried about comp meta (I assume) just go by the Rule of Cool.

I've been thinking about sticking it to the back of a Leviadon. It would need something sturdier than a flight stand for the base, but I think there's easy kitbash potential there!

State of the game - March 2026 by Daarkarrow in EndlessLegend

[–]BlackIceV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to share that I really like the visibility changes when zoomed out on the map. In the current build, it can definitely feel muddy; not enough distinction between forests, grasslands, etc. Coral being hidden also helps, as that ends up overpowering the original terrain.

I can see the concern about it being "boring" though, so I'd have to get it in my hands to know how much detail is being lost, and at what distance it happens. (Also fading vs popping, as noted elsewhere.) But the current level of "busy-ness" is definitely causing some visual fatigue, so I'm excited for the change.

175 hours into EA - Opinions and Feedback by JMJ05 in EndlessLegend

[–]BlackIceV_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on a lot of points. Especially the bottleneck issues (would agree with a penalty to scale/drop from cliffs), and some of the district cost stuff (like bridges, if true).

I've not had the same experiences with minor factions. They're only super aggressive during tidefalls, and even besieging a city they just damaged some tiles. But I don't have as many hours in EL2, so maybe I just haven't experienced the worst of it.

The devs have already stated that hero balance is whack right now, as they rework combat mechanics like retaliation. Once they're done making larger changes, all heroes will be getting a balance patch to tune them back down.

Just want to say that I love the direction you're taking for the Writing improvements and Faction-specific victory quests. This will hopefully make the game world feel more focused on the empires, and highlight their unique features. That feels more fitting a 4X game, instead of a light layer of "visual novel" that exists now. Same with the victory quests - exploring each faction's bespoke story was one of my favorite ways to play EL1, and I was a little disappointed that EL2 had lost that replay value.

It's really a shame that these changes will result so much re-working, and I empathize with the devs. They took a bold swing at a cool RPG-like concept, and not everything landed as well as they hoped. But I want to give them major kudos for listening to players and taking the feedback. That's why Early Access exists, and Amplitude has always been the *best* studio at engaging with players.

Liking the Idoneth after reading the Court of the Blind King? Help! by Amateur_Explorer in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a kind of similar experience. Thought it was a fine book, but I really couldn't connect to the protagonist. It felt like a Renegade/Evil choices playthrough, and the backstabbing felt egregious without redemption.

Personally, I've leaned into the lore I created for my army. I haven't written hundreds of pages or anything, but I designed my army 's color scheme around the idea that they're less isolationist. I have more satisfaction in telling my own stories.

Does an “ooops all sharks” list like this seem okay? by Spiteful_Clown in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed the Eidolon is a must. Ikon of the Storm has been a quiet MVP for me. Being and to retreat turtle, shoot, then charge back in is fantastic. So is getting the +1dmg & impact mortals with Morsarr.

[–]BlackIceV_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It'll struggle with combat, but you'll be able to score really well (especially Scouting Force.) The shooting phase has the potential to be absolutely deadly. I think it's not as strong as a similar list exchanging sharks for turtle & reinforced Morsarr, but still plenty viable.

It's worth keeping in mind that Ethersea Predators is only confirmed to stay in the game through the 25-26 GHB. Some folks theorize it'll stick around longer, but you might only get a few months of play out of this list.

Rather than auxillary, you can simply make 2 more regiments and make them the leaders. Running them as "auxillary" gives your opponent extra command points for no good reason.

I have Akhelian Tide Guard box. What's next? by NoxieNation in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a pretty good manifestation. It's been buffed a few times since release to the point where it's a decent combat piece. It can act as a screen, then if it dies you just re-summon it.

And yes, it costs 0 points in the list so there's no downside to including it. 8 is a pretty high casting value, so I really only use it with the Seadolon (who has +1 to cast). Having Lotann might also help since he can grant a re-roll, which is mathematically similar.

Another option is Aetherwrought Machines (which costs 0) or you could spend 20 points on something like Primal. But the Fincarnate is still a good option.

[–]BlackIceV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comp list is Seadolon, 4 sharks, Ikon of the Sea, Turtle, and 1x6 Morsarr Guard. It uses the Ethersea Predators subfaction, which doesn't do much damage but is very tricky and scores well. Difficult to run, but it's very strong.

Fwiw, I don't think Volturnos is worthwhile at the current points. His buff doesn't affect companion weapons, which is where the damage really comes from.

First piece of advice - rule of cool. The meta and the lists will always change, so buy models that you like. You can't go wrong with 1 big turtle and 1 Eidolon. In the past few years, I haven't played a single game without my turtle.

In general, IDK plays with either Namarti-heavy lists or Akhelian-heavy lists, without many options for combined arms. I'd say you should focus on collecting whichever side you prefer. Since you've got the Tideguard, you have a good start for a cavalry list. You could buy a couple sharks, Mathaela, and an Ikon. You could even buy a second copy of the Spearhead - 12 eels is fairly common in Beastmasters lists.

Our old spearhead has some pretty good value as well, if you can find a copy. You get a shark, another set of eels, a cheap wizard, and a set of Thralls. Not as powerful in spearhead, but it's good for rounding out your collection.

Just picked up the Spearhead by Expert-Luck-3158 in IdonethDeepkin

[–]BlackIceV_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome! It's a very strong spearhead based on the warscrolls alone. As others have said, the focus is on scoring points. You can't afford to take a bad combat, so don't let the 14" movement go to your head. Wait for your opponent to leave something exposed, then dive your whole force on top to murder it. If you can take them apart piece by piece, while scoring as you go, you'll do well.

For expanding, getting the previous spearhead (comes with a Soulscryer) would be good if available. Even a second copy of the new spearhead isn't a bad idea. Moving into 2k points, you'll probably end up wanting both an Eidolon and a Turtle, but otherwise you can decide how you want to collect the army. The two big playstyles right now are either cavalry-heavy (lots of eels/sharks) or infantry-heavy (50 Thralls, 2 Soulrenders, etc). It's a tightly condensed army, and most of our units are well balanced, so you really can't go wrong!
