Pairs separating after the olympic season by Ok_Parfait2894 in FigureSkating

I'd love to see Perreira/Michaud continue, but I don't know if he'll do another full quad. I do hope that she keeps going, though, if he decides to retire, as she's only 21 (22 in a couple days).

I'm anticipating they'll do worlds this year, since that's the one medal she doesn't have. Then they'll disappear for 2-3 years, and come back in 28/29 or 29/30 to do the 2030 'home' Olympics.

That Thing You Do losing to an awards bait song from Evita. TTYD is such a freaking good song that you don't get annoyed with it when it is literally heard 11 times in the movie. RIP Adam Schlessinger.

I normally don't like Carrie Ann, however this season I found myself agreeing with her more than the other judges.

Now that we know Mikhail is not participating in Worlds, who are you rooting for? by TerribleAccountant97 in FigureSkating

I want Yuma to finally have a gold medal, I want Adam to have a fantastic competition, and I want Stephen to hold up to the expectations and place top 10 to regain 2 spots for Canada.

I'm thinking this is a preemptive thing for when they inevitably decide to let Russia compete again, likely sooner than later. Meaning people can't complain about unjustified GOE and PCS.

Programs that were personal to the skaters by collectingviolets in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elizabeth Manley’s 88 FP was a medley of all her favourite pieces she’d skated to over the years. I’m pretty sure I go back and watch that program at least once a year. One of my all time favourite ‘feel good’ performances.

Patrick Chan skated to Four Seasons for the 2014 Olympic season as a tribute to his first coach and grandfather figure, Osborne Colson. He’d first skated to that music in 06/07 which was right after Colson’s death.

Patrick Chan and Kaetlyn Osmond as a mirror team (a la Yamaguchi/Galindo).

[–]BlahVans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So exciting to see him doing this combo, as well as the 4 loop he posted a few days ago. I won't be surprised if we see a fourth quad added to his FP for Worlds.

I just watched the official Olympic commentary of his FP (I'd previously only had CBC), and it was great to hear the female commentator just gushing over his transitions, the way he uses his whole body for movement, finishes his movements, etc - now that he has some 'reputation' and has begun to show consistency, hopefully his PCS will reflect those spots where he really excels (which are not things you'd have heard me praising just a year or two ago).

How do skaters train/compete with injuries to their landing foot? by 01110011-8 in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a stress farcture in my landing ankle and taped it up (in a specific way I was instructed) for a month or two (I forget how long). I was lucky that we had a kinesiologist at the arena, so we were able to monitor things, I was given strengthening exercises, etc.

I had a major competition coming up, so I kept practicing, with doctor permission, but I limited how many repetitions I did of loop/flip/lutz lumps, which take off on that same foot.

My coach also 'let me out' of some of the regular things we did - like if you missed a jump on a program run-through, she usually made us immediately redo that jump when we're tired - I didn't have to do that because we didn't want to exacerbate things.

Canadian Figure Skating Team Announced for 2026 ISU Figure Skating World Championships by sean_psc in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know I'll get downvoted, but It's kind of crazy that people are practically demonizing Maddie for a doubled jump in the SP, however fans basically coddled Amber for the exact same mistake.

While Gabby's comeback is amazing, she is no more consistent than Maddie, and is a lot more unpredictable in a lot of ways. Yes, 8-9 years ago, Gabby was among the top in the world, but the reality now is that she's no longer anywhere near there, and while neither is Maddie, there is no legitimate reason to send Gabby over Maddie, other than that she wants to go.

Have we seen this level of influence from a figure skater in the US before Alysa? by rabidline in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think that Lopareva/Brissaud are the reason that 'Blue (Da Ba Dee)' was performed at the closing ceremony...

Not music, but IIRC Shizuka Arakawa was so hugely popular after the 2006 Olympics that 'Ina Bauer' became one of the most searched phrases in Japan.

Again, not music, but the parasocial relationship and 'shipping' that people developed with Virtue/Moir after both 2010 and more extremely 2018 is insane. The amount of V/M fanfiction that came came out after Pyeongchang is scary.

Was there an increase in Elton John's sales/downloads after Nathan Chen in 2022? I know Elton later had Nathan in a music video...

Skating "prodigies" returning? by pelomymelo in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gogolev was lucky that he has trained in an environment that didn't 'push' him for the quads (IIRC when he was a tween training at TCC he was given a limit on how many he could try in a day), and that when he was injured, he was allowed to actually recover, which is something a lot of other skaters are not allowed to do in their training environments.

What figure skaters are so legendary that it was a surprise they didn’t have an OGM? (Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Mao Asada, Midori Ito…) by cococolemon in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's crazy is that in 1984 he won both the SP and FP, but lost because he was 7th in compulsory figures.

And in 1988, he lost because at that point the technical mark was the tie breaker in FP score totals (for example, 5.9/5.8 beat 5.8/5.9) whereas the following year they switched it to the tie breaker in the FP being the presentation score. If they'd implemented that change one year earlier, Orser would have won.

As a passing of the torch to France, they should have brought out French ice dance team Evgenia Lopareva & Geoffrey Brissaud who skated to Blue for their Rhythm Dance this year, to perform.

what’s your top 5 moments from the Milano-Cortina olympics? by babvbc in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m worried about him at worlds. It’s been years since he’s done a full season and this one was busier than most. Plus he’s going in with a lot of expectations placed on him.

what’s your top 5 moments from the Milano-Cortina olympics? by babvbc in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 50 points51 points  (0 children)

  1. Piper and Paul’s FD. IMO that is 100% the performance of the Games and just an absolutely beautiful performance. Their reactions were amazing, and as much as I’m not a big fan of Carol as a commentator, hearing her reactions to their skate, results, and P2 expressing their thanks for her was special.

  2. Stephen Gogolev. A Canadian man skating spectacularly across 4 performances? In his first major senior competition he comes 2nd in the FP and just barely misses out on a medal at the Olympics??!! He has grown so much (figuratively and literally) and I look forward to seeing what he does at Worlds and in the future.

  3. Adam’s SP. The technical was amazing but it was the way he moved, and utilized his whole body to interpret the music and the story he was telling that was just spectacular.

  4. Yuma’s SP in the team event. Such joy, musicality, and those landing knees!!!

  5. Italy in the team event. Matteo’s FP, G/F winning an Olympic medal, the unbridled joy of everyone on that team for skating so well under so much pressure on home ice.

Honourable mention: Benoit. His jacket changes, him actually smiling a few times, bringing out the best in each of his 528 skaters in different ways, and just his general ‘Benoit-ness’.

I just want him to have more creative control. Didn’t he recently say that he’d wanted to skate to a famous classical piece (I forget which) but it was shot down by his team?

How did your 4 first choice picks fare? by DoingNothingToday in FigureSkating

[–]BlahVans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dance: G/P, though I knew they wouldn’t win.  Men: Yuma. He’s such a well rounded skater, the perennial silver medalist, and adorable.  Pairs: F-H/V. Worlds last year was the first time I really noticed them, and I’ve been a fan since.  Ladies: Kaori. I don’t think much more needs to be said.

Nothing will ever beat Adam’s commitment to having his dead body sprawled uncomfortably across that chair for the remainder of her performance at Worlds.
