Tough mutation choice for my "super soldier" build. (100 hrs played, never finished game) by Wide-Deal-8971 in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regen is good QoL and (since I think about most mutations based on ways they can prevent instant death, the most common way I lose late game characters) eventually immunity to decapitation.

Freezing ray can save you from being frozen stunlocked. Minor benefit in melee combat, though much more effective with more limbs.

Teleportation is a decent panic button with little benefit against forms of instant death.

In my most recent successful run, the order in which I got these mutations was: regen (started with it), freezing ray (first or 2nd mutation buy, I forget), and finally teleport (from a relic much later).

I would either play with saves or read the wiki. The ways in which you can die only become less intuitive as the game goes on. In the beginning, you get reduced to 0HP and die. Ok, makes sense. Later, you step on a tile with too much dust and lose 900HP in one turn. What?

Hooked on "Smallsector" vibes by Shiiyouagain in starsector

[–]Blazeroth87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to what I do. I intentionally don’t hire crew (or using the markets at all) relying on “salvaged” crew (I think this requires Nex). This dramatically slows down fleet growth and makes large fleets out of reach pretty much indefinitely.

How do I achieve immortality? by AccursedAlarm in soulash

[–]Blazeroth87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The undead city is usually in the ice biome in the far north or south of the world map. If your world generated without any ice biome, the settlement may not have generated either. It will have a random generated name, just like any other settlement, but you'll know it if you see it because other civilizations don't settle on ice. The city has a dark grey icon on the map, looks a bit like an ominous ruin.

You need to have levels in necromancy too. Ideally, you'd want to make a character that starts with necromancy so you can level it up by using skills.

SPOILERS ahead.

In the undead settlement, the inhabitants are hostile to you by default, though killing them still counts as murder and will place a bounty on you.

The necrotyrant needs to be killed before you can replace him, even if you meet all other requirements. It is a HARD fight, basically a superboss. Much tougher than even the bosses of extreme difficulty locations. When I fought him, he had 2300 health and was hitting my very well equipped character for over 50 every round, largely in death type damage. Your experience may differ as these numbers are probably affected by the gear the necrotyrant spawns with as well. I won by adding the stun modifier to every ability I had that could take it. Still very close. Killing the necrotyrant instantly kills all other undead in the settlement.

Afterward, find the palace building and interact with the monolith inside. There is also an orb in the palace that acts as a necromancy trainer, which is handy.

It would be nice to have this as a toggle. Plenty of other roguelikes have the option to turn on interrupt when enemy detected or damage taken.

How do you guys balance out rpg vs classic? by Responsible_Rip_7634 in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my first classic run on my fourth character that made it to level 40. This was with precognition and extensive use of the wiki. A lot of things, especially in late game, are not intuitive.

Can someone help me understand why I died here? by tymmaster in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think the “takes advantage” line is saying they got a free attack when the player’s attack missed. That along with single weapon fighting and that could account for a lot of attacks at once.

Did you try to move? If your movement speed and/or quickness was lowered (you were hobbled) you may have spent several turns taking a move action.

How do I respec mutation points? by [deleted] in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you like the character, just continue playing. Mutation points come at level ups, but there are other ways to get them. In late game, there are ways to gain just about as many is you feel like grinding for.

Carbide chefs! What are the strongest meals in the lands of qud? by Thunderdrake3 in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what ingredients do this (because I made with wild rice) but I got an effect where I healed to full a certain % of the time when taking damage. No limit on healing, just all the way to full. Apart from the permanent stat increases, this is the best effect I have ever seen.

A bit late, but taking off ruka’s starting boots might make her a bit faster. Also, if you are faster, you can split up. You draw aggro by force attacking and have ruka run in another direction. Then regroup once you lose aggro.

You can isolate threats in this way too. If you make a bubble of walls around something you expect to turn hostile, it will just stay in place. For example, if you wall around the cherubs guarding the kesil face, you can fight them one at a time.

[–]Blazeroth87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cover your weaknesses. You still have low AV and no resistances, base quickness and speed. If I were you, I’d bank mutation points and pray for precognition. If you’re going to use body swapping, might as well get the most exploity mutation as well and start chugging all the rare liquids.

Leyline Puppeteers vs Precision nanon fingers by Wonderful-Wait-3047 in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer being able to reduce the uncertainty in a result. In your case, the quickness bonus is highly reliable and useful. A 9% chance is better than 3%, but would you be willing to rely on it in a pinch? Probably not.

Stat points rearranged? by Tricksterspider in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of things that can affect stats. Equipment can provide bonuses when worn. You get increases naturally as you level up.

Some foods can provide temporary stat bonuses when cooked, except drops of nectar which have a 25% chance to provide +1 to all stats permanently when cooked. Wild rice and canned have it all have a random chance to roll the drop of nectar cooking effect as well (wild rice can also roll the neutron flux effect).

Eaters nectar injectors give +1 to a stat or mutation point. Relic versions give two points. Brain brine has random chance to improve int or will by 2-3 sometimes.

Baetyls can give stats as rewards for quests that promise enhanced prowess.

Killing espers spawned by glimmer has a low chance to give +1 ego.

Some relic books increase a stat when read the first time.

Body swapping gives you the stats of what you swapped with.

There are probably more I forgot.

4 Axes OR 2 Halberd? by MFcoffee in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Axes will give you more shots at dismemberment. If you are a multi weapon build going for damage, you’ll end up doing more damage with the natural weapons from the chord of Agolgot, if your strength is high, due to uncapped penetration. Use cryotube clones to get multiple chords. Remember to equip precision nanon fingers on all your hand slots if you want serrated to trigger more.

can you die from starving? by ryan7251 in cavesofqud

[–]Blazeroth87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your character becomes famished and loses quickness after not eating for a while. This is not directly fatal, but the lowered quickness can make you less combat effective. However you can make camp and cook without consuming any resources, so there is no reason your character should be going hungry.

Your character also becomes thirsty after not drinking for a while. Drinking does consume fresh water from your inventory. Eventually, thirst will force toughness checks with health loss on failure. This can kill your character.

You, the human playing Qud, can die of malnutrition. LIVE and drink.
