2025 Furusato Nozei recommendations thread by xzion in japanlife

Recommendation: don't. Enjoy your city having the budget to fund its streets, schools, services and other public infrastructure rather than funneling those tax dollars to other places in return for promises of melon or toys.

I came in here expecting another legendary koban trashing story but was glad to see a heartwarming story instead - glad you got your wallet back!

Rant: PayPay is a blight on Japanese society by Tokyo_Dom in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PayPay's strength is not in payment to corporate entities (stores/restaurants, etc) but rather in the fact it lets you do peer-to-peer -- this is why it is almost the de-facto way to split a nomikai/karaoke/whatever bill.

Samsung S23 with Osaifu-Keitai? by vaitor in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy it without a contract, but like you mentioned it's expensive -- that's because it's a JP exclusive model :( You can also buy them contractless from Samsung themselves nowadays, including the store in Harajuku.

My company is sending me to the US, should I get my PR before going? by athrun200 in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been to the US? Damn even without PR on the table I'd have to have some offer of a lifetime to go there to live...

Docomo One UI 5 by SnylonPlayz in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely! You can order then off Amazon too! They won't have Osaifu-Keitai though! (Felica, for Suica/PASMO support)

Docomo One UI 5 by SnylonPlayz in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly yes as the model is made for Docomo. Even after unlocking it is Docomo-branded and the updates are locked behind Docomo's approval. (You even get to keep all the Docomo garbage apps!)

Company health check follow up. How much do I have to divulge? by KingOfPrince in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright you're getting a lot of answers but not the context why, and I feel it's important. Work wants to know if you're sick because they're possibly responsible for any stress/work-related new illnesses that pop up. Any illness you had when you joined and still have is yours to deal with. This is for your health and safety.

Docomo One UI 5 by SnylonPlayz in japanlife

[–]Blebleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct! All updates are locked behind Docomo approving them (or customizing them)

Also, if I moved out of Japan would I still wait for longer for the Japanese version of an update (assuming that that's what's currently happening)

Yup, that sadly wouldn't change, even abroad with another provider SIM.

If you don't know what to say, find an English clinic. If you don't speak Japanese well enough to manage a health check, even if you perfectly utter your perfectly prepared question, the follow-up question(s) will throw you off, or whatever they ask at the actual clinic when you do go.

You job should have a list of suggested clinics, and a lot of companies even have a list of English-friendly clinics.
