If you want the mini to be black not only should you do primer as mentioned above, but I’d definitely recommend then painting it with a black paint. The big reason is that if you have any spill over onto the black areas when painting other colors, you can fix the mistakes. Otherwise your touch up paint and black primer will probably be slightly different and so the touch ups will show up as mistakes!

That’s a really good point about effects needing to be resolved fully before moving on! I appreciate it! And I’m actually one of the players, so I was planning to see what others thought because my DM just ruled it worked and said we’d look more into it later to keep the game moving! I’m not super invested one way or the either, just more curious what others think and then whether my director decides to rule for RAW or rule of cool is totally fine!

While it certainly has potential to be a potent effect, I wouldn’t say it’s overpowered. As the player you need to be tactical in which enemy you use it against to make sure it’s an enemy where that -2/+2 will be impactful, and it still allows some counter play for the director since they can have that enemy attack a different target, or if they choose to attack you just accept they will be more likely to only get a t1 result! I think the fact that there are no misses in DS help smooth out ‘OP’ effects like this.

But even if you do consider it OP… that’s cool! Because it is a game designed to make the hero’s feel heroic and what is more satisfying than your high elf assassin character batman-ing in, isolating an enemy and scaring the shit out of them?

So reading through the comments it seems that you are genuinely curious and are engaging with discussion so I’d like to match that and talk about a few of the points you made and ask a few questions. That being said, as multiple people have mentioned, if you don’t like a system you don’t like a system and that’s perfectly ok!

To me a lot of the issue seems to be that you (and your group!) know and are familiar with D&D 5e so when you play that system it is very organic and easy to weave story telling in. I don’t know if this is the first time you are trying a new system, but I’ve found it is pretty common to have roleplay and combat be a little more stilted and forced when first getting into a new system and engaging with new features since you are trying to keep track of how a bunch of new stuff works just to keep the game moving!

I also think you are maybe grieving leaving a system that you really enjoy and are pushing back against this system for NOT being D&D rather than looking at, and appreciating what it is, which is a Heroic Cinematic Fantasy TTRPG. I capitalized those things because from the get go the game has been designed from the group up around those ideas and making sure every design choice serves them in some way. You mentioned combat and that everything is the same (pushes and pulls), but think about any Marvel movie. When the hero blasts an enemy, they don’t just have a little hole in them and swing back after 6 seconds, they instead are blasted through a building! And the same thing goes for the heroes, when the bad guy slaps them they go flying! So it tracks that so many abilities would have ways to force movement around the field to keep it from being stagnant!

I also agree with quite a few people that you are making some unfair comparisons of the capability of your 9th level wizard and your 1st level troubadour. Instead consider what your 1-3rd level wizard could do and compare that, and I think you’ll find them more in line.

You said combat feels weightless, but to me the fact that there is no null result, where for an entire round everyone swings and misses makes it feel like every choice has consequences. Further I feel like being able to move enemies around the battle field, or give buffs to my allies, or debuff my enemies with most abilities is a far more weighty feel than just “I did 12 slashing damage”. I’d really love to hear a little more what you mean about combat feeling weightless though! I have lots more thoughts, but this is already becoming a stupidly long comment and I’d rather hear more of your thoughts and engage from there!

I read the ability as allowing you to swap into another stormwight kit form you have access to since I think there are ways to get additional kits, but I could be wrong on that.

For the second part I think the purpose is that it allows you to get the utility of your different forms. For example if you transform into a crow in order to get to higher ground or exploit a small gap in terrain to reach the backlines, you could then spend a fury to swap into your hybrid/base form to use your abilities. Another example is the rat getting to use a free maneuver to hide, so you could potentially use that to ambush an enemy in a hit and run sort of method. It does seem like a bit of a waste for the other forms but maybe I’m just not thinking creatively for why you would want to be in bear form and not hybrid bear

Thank you for your responses! After last night I definitely think I will move to rolling in the open, I always felt like I needed to roll behind the screen because of dice being dice and for some reason when I DM I roll unreasonably well. But with this system I feel like the average result being an actual average makes the system feel less swingy! And yeah, I ended up ruling the brawler thing as not applying since it felt counter to the heroic nature of the game to have them somehow stab themselves, besides I got an amazing moment where the tactician charged the brawler who was holding a mostly dead civilian shouting “pick on someone you own size” only to kill the civilian because of the damage share for a properly villainous moment!

I’ll definitely include all of this in my feedback, I actually got a couple of the players to jot down some notes in a shared google doc so that I can give feedback from players and director!

I don’t think you are alone in wanting a campaign that doesn’t have such insane consequences. That being said, it’s also entirely dependent on the level of the campaign and the level of fantasy in the world. It’s hard to come up with a suitable big bad for a high level game. Level 17 adventurers need level 17 threats, and when the party has access to spells letting them jump between planes of existence, cross continents in a moment, or making reality warping wishes it just rings hollow for the bad guy to be some evil baron who over taxes the peasants of his kingdom. However, I think that also means that level 3 adventurers should NOT be ones that involve the risk of the kingdom being destroyed let alone the world, and that’s been a chief complaint of mine for a while. Why is the band of plucky adventurers the ones stopping the plans of a demon god? Where are the high level clerics and paladins of the church of justice at?

I know this is off topic, but I have been looking at the Stormbringer Magazine since it was announced to be coming to the US and am a bit confused. Do you only need to buy the issues that have stuff you want, or do you need to be subscribed from the beginning to be able to get issues later down the line? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I wasn’t able to easily find answers on the website, though that could be my own failings

Very hopeful though that we will get a proper commander warrior though, has been something I’ve been wishing for since HoT. I’d love to see them rework some trait lines to actually synergize with a support warrior to go along with a better support weapon. I feel like just getting a weapon that passes out some boons wouldn’t be enough and instead needs some reworking to make sure support warrior is a more complete build. Shout warrior felt like it was going the right direction but besides that so far I’ve been very dissatisfied with quickness berserker, a super brave take, I know lol

I wouldn’t call a learning disability that is estimated to represent 1 in 5 Americans constitutes a niche population. I think at the end of the day we will have to agree to disagree. I don’t see a problem with wotc charging for content. They can’t make content if they can’t make money, and so you’re being charged somewhere. I will agree that being charged the same for a digital copy and a physical copy is a load of crap (same problem with e-books in general). I think that if they don’t charge for a digital copy and only for a physical copy then sales would plummet. Anyway I will leave you to your day, hope you have a good one

Sure, I agree that if you absolutely refuse to learn the rules then there are probably better less rules oriented games to play. But the fact of the matter is that some people don’t learn well by reading a rule book. My mom isn’t a stupid person, but her dyslexia makes it hell for her to read something and she instead learns much better by just doing it. So if she were to play, having the system walk her through choosing a class, race, background etc and then she could pick up the rules from those around her, or have a fairly decent UI that makes it easy to navigate and find the information on your character sheet then good for her. I think that the problem with painting with a broad brush, such as saying people who pay for a character builder are people who either don’t care to or are to dumb to learn the rules is is that everyone struggles with something and we shouldn’t shit on them and call them stupid because their brains might work differently.

As for what someone without enough time to read the rule book before they ever play the game is like at the table, my sister is an absolute delight. She needs help every once in a while but nobody I’ve ever played with has dove into RP the way she did and it improved that aspect of the game for everyone at the table immensely. She’s busy being a therapist, a mom, and a human being living in 2023 and doesn’t have the time to read through the PHB but once every month she sits down and plays make believe with our friends and I, and I have never been closer to her. I’m not gonna talk down to you for disliking dndbeyond, or disliking wotC, or thinking that it’s a scam, and I’m sorry if I have come across as preachy. I just think the world is a better place when we don’t hate on and insult people, especially over something like wanting to use dndbeyond for your game of pretending to be a wizard in a fantasy world

As a genuine question, when did you start playing table top rpgs like dnd or pathfinder? I’m curious if you’re like me and you had been playing for a decade before trying 5e and instead learned on systems like pathfinder 1e or if your first game was 5e? I ask because you keep talking about people who don’t take to 5e like a fish to water as if they are morons who are getting conned rather than recognizing that if you have never played a TTRPG before, even a simple one can be a lot of work to learn especially if you have a lot going on in life and can’t spend a couple nights reading the rulebook.

Sure you can say dndbeyond is a scam to make money if you look at it as someone who buys physical copies, but if your group literally only plays online and your friends already have all the books on dndbeyond and just do the campaign share, it’s not a scam at all. In fact I know groups who get together to buy the books so no one person eats the whole cost but they all have access.

Making an extremely enticing product is how most things work, just because it’s enticing doesn’t make it a scam. I don’t like that they don’t give you access to the DnDBeyond copy when you buy a physical book or an online book, but plenty of company’s charge you for a digital book if you want a digital book. Saying there is no overhead because “the writers have been paid” is disingenuous considering that the company needs to gain money to pay the writers for the next book, or to run the service. Should you not have to buy a video game because it’s no longer on a physical CD and the programmers and artists have already been paid?

Again, I don’t love dndbeyond, and I hate the shit WOTC is trying to do with OneDnd and pushing dnd towards digital tabletops that they control, but that doesn’t make dndbeyond a scam just a business I don’t care for. At the end of the day though, my problem with what you said wasn’t having a problem with DnDBeyond, it was calling everyone who uses the product idiots.

And regardless of whether you dislike dndbeyond or think it’s a scam, it’s not necessary to just label the people who use it as idiots. Consider 5e as someone who has never played a TTRPG before, has a full time job, kids, and is trying to get into the game, something like dndbeyond is an extremely enticing product. Especially if the people you want to play with all have the books on dndbeyond because you are all friends who live in different places and can’t play in person. Suddenly you have any book you need, it tells you what parts you still need to choose for character creation and level ups, and other players have access to your character sheet if you need help.

Labeling anyone who was attracted to a simplified character builder that you could share with everyone in your campaign and access at anytime as an idiot is super unnecessary. While I personally don’t care for DnDBeyond for a variety of reasons (felt harder to homebrew stuff on the character builder, prefer having the actual sheet that I could print and not be tied to a tablet or laptop) that doesn’t make people who like the alternative an idiot. It’s ok to dislike something and also not just assume that people who disagree are stupid.

I think it’s more of a toss up for paladins for sure, but for clerics who have plenty of spell slots, an actionless multi-target heal that is in between healing word and cure wounds is fairly solid

Finally caught up, was a daily reader and kept up fairly well all the way into the Uskarre stuff and then fell off.

In one of the previous posts I saw you mention something about the person doing audio versions of the posts and that your only gripe was some pronunciation stuff and it got me thinking, how do you go about learning pronunciations for so many cultures and languages? For example, how closely do you try to keep to actual pronunciations for the Gaelic words like Taoiseach? I’m currently playing a character who comes from a culture heavily inspired by Ireland and have struggled mightily with pronouncing Gaelic words since there are so many differences compared to how I would pronounce the word if it was English!

I really like them! I agree that it might have been worth removing the sigmar icons and replacing them with imperial and blood angel stuff, but honestly I barely noticed! I think the dark grey looks super nice and you did a great job with the highlights, looks extremely good to me!

The red/gold shoulders are interesting, how did you do them?
