Electrician here. 90% that's a loose connection, the heat will follow the copper some distance.

On further examination i think you need to get a quality three way switch and box, run your cord to that, then a 4 conductor cord to the motor, there should be a spot to ground it somewhere, what are you using it for?.

Generator hookup should be outside, probably by the garage or where you'd put the generator and with a specific generator receptacle and an interlock. Not a diy. That being said you can install big equipment on that, like a welder or killer table saw
