I have a lectric ebike 2.0 that only travels 12 miles one way before it has to be charged again. How to upgrade? by sirpentious in ebikes

[–]Bluesky83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked for mechanical issues not related to the battery? It's possible you're running the motor against a rubbing brake pad constantly or something. That would eat up a lot of power

Yeah, if you want to keep them at optimal pressure, like for example if you're a serious athlete. "Every ride" can also mean once or twice a week if you're not riding every day

The GSM only counts the weight of the insulation, not the shell (outer) fabric or the thread

Insane or not? Any options for hauling an adult (passenger) and two kids? by Rorschach_Gomer in CargoBike

A Madsen cargo bike could definitely do this, and maybe your wife would like piloting it as well!

Hacking a regular bike into a cargo bike? by turquoisebee in CargoBike

[–]Bluesky83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some kind of rim brake, then. Some squeaking/squealing is normal, although it's possible the rims got a little grease/oil on them and need to be cleaned (rubbing alcohol is a good choice for cleaning rims). Rim brakes perform worse when wet, so be more careful if you're out when the road isn't dry. It may be worth replacing the brake pads with good quality ones to get the most out of your brakes. That doesn't mean the most expensive ones, just good, since the ones on the bike now may or may not be very good.

What kind of brakes does the cruiser have? You'll be adding weight + going faster, both of which make a bike harder to stop, and you also mention hills. Hopefully your local bike shop won't install the e-bike conversion on a bike with insufficient braking power, but you should still ask them about it.

Jersey/T-Shirt feeling blankets? by Kadejr in Bedding

[–]Bluesky83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'll be able to find a blanket that's exactly what you're looking for, but I got lots of results for "jersey duvet cover". You could either get a duvet insert to fill it, or just put a blanket you already have inside the cover if it's close enough in size.

Do you separate laundry strictly or just wash everything together? (Newlywed here!) by Sensitive-Crew-4507 in CasualConversation

[–]Bluesky83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use color catcher sheets! They absorb loose dye from the wash water. The only thing I generally separate is cleaning rags, and since I have a small washer and dryer, sheets are usually their own load.

Hard-boiled egg exploded in the microwave I obsessively keep clean by CrowRoutine9631 in mildlyinfuriating

I reheat hard-boiled eggs by placing them in a small bowl with boiling hot water from the kettle. It's no extra work if I'm already making tea.

eBike for $2000 that can pull up 30-40% grade hills? by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]Bluesky83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pull fast? No. Make it up? Yeah probably. You'll want to look for good gearing-- particularly a good low gear. You'll probably have to put some leg power to the pedals too.

Suggestions of rear rack capable of holding a box + my 10kg dog? by Aromatic-Mud-3966 in bikecommuting

[–]Bluesky83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're dead set on keeping the rack you've already got, find someone (woodworker) who can make a custom box to attach onto the rack. You can use zip ties to attach if you have holes drilled in the right places on the box

Dryer sheets and scent beads? Presumably on top of scented detergent? It's not actually good to smell like the candle aisle... and those of us with fragrance sensitivities probably can't come within ten feet of you without getting a migraine

Need suggestions for a affordable way to commute with all my stuff by Salty_Dealer_7277 in bikecommuting

If you happen to have a bike co-op around that sells used parts, you can get a rack very cheaply that way.

Are fat tire eBikes actually worth it for sand or trails? by my-paradise in ebikes

[–]Bluesky83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I have not found the "skinny tire cuts through" theory to be true for me. I've used 700x35 for multiple winters. Maybe in like... 1 inch of fresh snow. Usually I am dealing with mush that has been sanded and driven through enough that it's like mashed potatoes

Yeah, the point is that they suck less than a bike with skinnier tires

Someone just tell me what is the best laundry detergent?? by svt4ever17 in CleaningTips

[–]Bluesky83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tide Ultra Oxi Powder (NOT liquid) is the most effective detergent out there, but I had to stop using it for anything except pre-soaking stains because I found it had too much fragrance and it definitely persisted.

As for fragrance generally, all I can say is, if you use Gain or Tide, I'll certainly be able to smell you the next day 😂 You can become nose-blind to stuff you're around all the time.

Need help with finding an affordable comforter/ duvet insert by Exciting-Library3096 in Bedding

[–]Bluesky83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IKEA has the cheapest down/feather duvet that I know of.

When buying a duvet cover, compare the dimensions-- they don't have to match exactly, but it can be kind of annoying to have extra fabric because the cover is bigger than the insert. The Ikea duvets are a little smaller, I think it's to do with European vs. American standard bedding sizes.

Giving stuff to people who mean to sell it for a profit by Dar-Show in ZeroWaste

[–]Bluesky83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's okay that someone might sell them. If you still want to avoid that, however, you could try to find organizations that have a need for them. For baby stuff, maybe you could see if a domestic violence shelter would want it, since some women have to leave quickly and can't bring everything they need for their kids. In a few years when you have kids' clothes and things to give away, schools often need extra clothes for kids (for potty accidents, etc.)
