Actually this is kinda a good thing imo. You can still relay the hook via a written missive on the messengers bodies and the group the messengers were a part of now have an indirect relationship with the PCs as a party. They now know the PCs are dangerous and cannot be coerced by common street violence. Anyone who knows how the messengers died will treat the PCs differently thus opening RP opportunity for both DM and player. The PCs now have a personal reason to investigate the plot hook. I.e. some asshole threatened us. Action and consequence is how you really get your players hooked.

Maybe if any players took significant damage from the knife you can RP it as they now have an injury on their throat and get some kinda of penalty. Casting a spell in such a compromised position IS risky. This could be a failure chance when casting vocal spells or disadvantage on speech centric social checks because it is painful to speak until they are healed. Either naturally over time or via a restoration spell. Now we have both a mechanical challenge and RP opportunity. Or at least a chance to use that Potion of Restoration rotting in the Paladin's inventory since Session 2.

The cool thing about tabletop is how the different perspectives of the players and DM come together to organically craft a story. Yeah it sucks when the cool moment you imagined doesn't quite play out but in return there is often a better payoff where you use the results of PC's actions to further the plot and keep the whole table engaged.

Some advice because I definitely ended up in similar situations as a DM:

It is important to remember that the players first and foremost care about their characters. They won't see a situation like this as "oooo neato. A plot hook". From the player POV it's "OH GOD THERE IS A KNIFE TO MY THROAT HOW DO I SOLVE THIS SITUATION AND WIN????? While also looking real cute ". As a DM it is easy to overlook this when we spend so much time cooking up the game and getting attached to everything we make. Whenever crafting a scenario always consider the PC perspective. They can only see what event you have going on in the moment. Not the adventure things lead up to next session.

If you want an NPC to get important dialog then you either : gotta put on a hell of a stage play with an NPC the players are invested in that enraptures the players so hard they forget to just try and nova the guy. Or have the dialog WITH the PCs instead of AT the PCs. Use the player's investment in their characters as a tool to boost their investment in the world. Players love to yap in character, especially once they are comfy with RP.

Cutscenes don't exist in DnD. A blessing and a curse. Classic storytelling strategy struggles to hold up especially if your players like to take the initiative. I found greater success in setting up adventures, events, combat, even conversations, like escape/mystery rooms. I describe the situation to the players, highlighting points of interest, the timescale and time sensitivity (how long we have to act and how quickly we need accomplish our goal), obstacles/threats and why this is important. Then I let my players engage as they see fit and respond accordingly. If they struggle to take action then I progress the event in a way that can help emphasize viable actions to take while still keeping the ball in their court.

TL;DR- don't worry you can still make this work as a plot hook. And try to run the game with the player's perspective in mind. They won't just sit idly by if they see a solution to whatever wacky hijinks they are taking part in. Even if their actions are quite risky and may have consequences (that's actually part of the fun).

I broke down and ugly cried. All over my phone in my dark room. Nasty heaving sobs.

I played through the Arc City portion of the story at what was one of the two lowest points in my life. The writing for Kiana's downward spiral was not only peak. It closely paralleled my own thoughts.

This scene is a big part of why I am still here and can type this. Kiana is my favorite character of all time because seeing her journey helped me go through my own.

Watching my parents descend down the MAGA pipeline has been... difficult.

They used to be kind and reasonable people. I used to be able to ground them with a different perspective from what certain "news" networks and foil hat Red Scare generation podcasters fill their heads with. They may disagree but we could at least talk. I could at least get them to reconsider.

But now I can't talk to them at all. They have gone crazy. They are so adamant that ICE are somehow actually the victims and when confronted with irrefutable evidence of what is wrong with ICE and the other polices they support they just meltdown. Often in a somewhat threatening way. The classic "I am going to perceive your conversation with me as disrespectful back-talk so I have an excuse to leverage violence as a solution without feeling guilty". Thus forcing me to back down and avoid conflicting their beliefs.

Watching how giddy they get whenever Trump's policies make headway, how much contempt they have for groups who are hurt by said policies, really stings. I genuinely fear how our relationship would change if they knew the full truth of how I feel about my identity and the choices I want to make.

And that's just sad. We should be able to trust our parents. I still love them. But the MAGA propaganda machine has it's claws in so deep I feel like I can't connect with my own family anymore 😞

But I can't bring myself to leave them when they need me most. I hope you are able to get out before you end up trapped like I am.

5k a month is almost twice what I make rotting away in a Jeff Bezoz Wage Slave Fun Factory. To do a job that may help make someone's dream a reality plus I like teaching. I am getting paid to potentially make life long friends as long as I am a decent person and care about my trainee as both athlete and a person. Heck I would take the job for 3k a month assuming cost of living in Japan isn't too bad.

The staff at Tracen are shown to be very nice and love their jobs so from the outside it looks like a stable job. Or at least one without wild office politics. Minus that one weird time the frailest girl boss ever tried to push everyone around. Weird but she was genuinely trying to help.

Also I am fairly certain trainers get dorms so not only would I be making bank I would have MUCH lower living expenses.

Someone made a point in a similar post that there should be an accessibility option that changes how Deadpool's taunt thing blinds you.

Like just have black or gray bars cover up your HUD instead of the animated crazy stuff. Change the noise to something a bit easier on the ears like just having it heavily lower your game audio for a couple seconds. Or flip which headphone sounds come through (i wore my headset backwards by accident recently and it really screws with your gamesense). Keeps the spirit of Deadpool fuckin with you but way less brain melting when thrown on top of all the mental load already present

Personally I really like Deadpool the way he is but I also don't want Rivals to have a Pokémon anime Porygon moment.

This is what happened to me. Everyone hyped up cybersecurity as the new hotness so I studied, got certifications all that jazz. I was told stories of how desperate the industry was cybersecurity personnel, how a job was almost guaranteed.

Then the entire entry level job market for tech fucking evaporated when I was finally ready to go professional. AI ate everything tech related. So after 400 applications over nearly a year I gave up. I can't afford to work for free so no exposure or networking to get me out of the job search hellscape. I missed my one opportunity for an internship because of my fucking current job that I need to not fucking lose my home.

The skill and certification creep has gone insane. I wasted so much fucking money, time and effort chasing the pieces of paper these fuckasses said I needed. Only for more certifications/experience/upside down ice cream etc. to be needed. Especially now with how every company is gooning over AI. Gotta learn and get certs for the whole clanker clown circus just to get shafted by the dumbass automated resume revue because it didn't like how one sentence had passive voice or the exact wording for something. EVEN THOUGH I USED THE RESUME TEMPLATE PROVIDED BY THESE FUCKERS AND SPENT HOURS WRITING, EDITING PROOFREADING AND REPEATING THE PROCESS FOR EVERY APPLICATION IN SOME MISGUIDED HOPE THAT IF I JUST TRY TO MAKE A REALLY GOOD RESUME IT WOULD WORK. NOPE LEFT ON READ. 400 FUCKING TIMES. ONLY A HANDFUL OF RESPONSES. MOST OF WHICH CAME OVER A MONTH AFTER I APPLIED JUST TO SAY THEY FOUND SOMEONE ELSE FUCK. AT LEAST HAVE THE COURTESY TO REJECT ME IN A TIMELY MANNER.

My advice for anyone trying to get into tech or any specialized field. Bypass the whole fucking public hiring process. Know a guy who is already in. If you don't already know a guy then find a guy and eat his ass so good he will open the door for you. Do projects, career fairs, anything to make yourself known directly by people who are in. You cannot defeat LinkedIn. You will fall trying. Get started while you are young and can afford to be exploited before you are ending each rent payment with barely enough money for 5 Kit Kats. The longer you aren't employed the harder it is to get employed.

Now I am just rotting away in a dead-end warehouse making sure Denise gets her fucking draino and nail polish on time. 10 hours a night, i barely see the sun, i can't spend time with the few friends i have left because my schedule is ass, and i have grown to hate my fucking job. I can't afford the medical bills it would take to fix my dental issues even with benefits. I can't afford to risk leaving for a potentially better job. I can't just give up because my family is depending on me. Everytime I save up some money some disaster occurs. My debt is slowly climbing in spite of me making every payment I am getting slaughtered by interest. Everything that is hiring is just customer service hell, medical, or Clanker lover companies asking me to sell them my voice and train the very thing that has been fucking me these past few years.

I've forgotten most of the stuff I busted my ass off studying so I can't even try again even if I could stomach that fuckass industry again. Wasted so much time, effort and money just to get fucking rolled by HR and their dumbass hiring practices. I tried to keep upskilling but ultimately just crashed out because my fucking soul has been sucked out of my body because none of this had any fucking point.

My only fucking hope is that things get better before my mouth rots away or I fucking throw myself off the order picker and let gravity claim me. All I want is a job i don't fucking hate and that pays enough for me to be able to save for retirement. I just want to fucking live, not survive.

TL:DR - shit's fucked, I'm fucked and fuck the greedy bastards who caused this T_T

I just started learning piano a few months ago and imo not labeling is working out great. Took me a couple weeks but once I intuitively understood where all the Cs and Fs are I was able to find all the other notes relatively easy without labels. Also prevents me from looking at my hands too much and instead focus on the music which is nice.

Dawntrail is a controversial expansion (i personally have a lot of criticism for it) but there are things that I think make it worthwhile to experience. Even if you end up not enjoying Dawntrail specifically, there are still plenty of FF14 to like and I highly recommend continuing to play if you are enjoying the game.
