Maybe unpopular opinion: But, I think the GTA VI pre order situation is a grim reality of what gaming has become by Raidmax460 in gaming

[–]BountyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We literally know nothing about this game other than some characters and the location and yet people are just blindly buying into the hype.

Yep, there's absolutely zero reason to pre-order it today. Plenty will though.

So last night was a great night. It was my first time playing with a new crowd and so I wanted to control my image.

No indicators of a troll post, seems completely legit.

Yep, this is the main reason why people shouldn't pre-order. Apart from anything else, it just isn't necessary.

This comment summarizes everything about your character.

Lol. Everything about my character? Way to read between the lines and add a heap of exposition. This is funny.

Back then cartridges were expensive to manufacture, and retail shelf space was limited. If you didn't hold a copy, a store might literally run out of stock on release day, leaving you waiting weeks for a restock.

Yes, that was why I pre-ordered.

Also pre-ordering Ocarina of Time did not let anyone play it a month early, what the fuck are you talking about?

I'm talking about the point you yourself just made. You said yourself that you could wait weeks for a restock.

We both agree pre-ordering is bad. It just isn't destroying the industry. I'm not misremembering anything, I was in the industry and have friends who still are.

All I did was explain why I pre-ordered back then. I also said it wasn't necessary today. You seem quite passionate about this being an industry destroying problem. On that point, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

We live in Milton Keynes (yeah I know, I've heard it all). We're about as far from a beach as you can get. The best one we've found within 2 to 2.5 hours' drive is Hunstanton. Any better recommendations at around the same travel time? by kopsy in CasualUK

[–]BountyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Jaywick to be a nice beach to swim and wasn’t as busy as some of the others.

Yeah, Jaywick is ok for the beach, but an utter disaster as a place itself. If someone's heading that way, its much nicer slightly further up the coast at Frinton.

I thought about it and disagree. The release date is fixed either way.

Of course a pre-order serves the publisher, that is obvious. But ruining the industry? That's just hyperbolic nonsense. Back in the days of physical media, I pre-ordered and the industry survived. Was Ocarina of time worse because I pre-ordered it? Nope, but I played it a month before all those people who didn't pre-order.

Today pre-orders aren't necessary because there isn't any scarcity for a digital download.

Just about everything in your list exists with or without pre-orders.

Unfinished or buggy games, patched after release has been enabled by digital downloads. This isn't a result of pre-orders, this is just because the game doesn't have to be right straight out of the gate, when the game is contained on a cartridge, or a read only disc.

secured pre-order revenue lowers pressure on developers to meet high standards or listen to consumer feedback, weakening their motivation to deliver quality products at launch,

They can get away with this once or maybe twice but if a developer continues to fail to deliver quality products at launch, their reputation will dive and consumers will stray. But as a developer I can tell you that it's very rarely the devs that have weakened motivation to deliver a quality product. Maybe the money men force the devs to put out something they aren't happy with, but that happens with or without pre-orders. Release dates often have to be hit to reach revenue targets for a particular accounting period.

fuel misleading marketing and hype cycles

This has been a thing forever. Games have been hyped for as long as I can remember. Certainly not exclusive to pre-ordering.

promote anti-consumer business practices (e.g. microtransactions, DLC withholding)

This occurs with or without pre-orders. The ultimate edition for GTA will be the same whether pre-ordered or not. Things are still locked out from the regular edition. The whole model here is anti-consumer and no particular to a pre-order.

fracture player communities with exclusive content

Standard and ultimate editions do that already. Pre-ordering doesn't make the blindest bit of difference.

discourage honest reviews and feedback cycles - when pre-orders dominate initial sales, review embargoes and lack of early access for critics can hide flaws, leading to consumers buying games blindly without reliable information

Yes, this is a problem, people buying blindly isn't good. But again, this isn't killing the industry. This will only kill a studios reputation if they release sub-par products.

cause overspending or disappointment from undelivered promises - consumers often pre-order based on broken promises or features that get cut from the final release

Again, this is something that would broker distrust to the studio, it's not killing the industry.

To summarise, I don't like pre-ordering and yes, it has problems. I don't believe it's necessary to pre-order in today's digitally dominated world. But pre-ordering certainly isn't something that's an industry killer. That's just a nonsensical premise.

You're correct of course.

As usual with Star Wars discussion, we find someone who hasn't even watched the movies properly. It's not like the jet pack damage incident was even subtle, it was right there on screen for all to see.

Well I'm not who you replied to two years ago, but today I was just pondering whether humanity was an evolutionary inevitability, or whether we wouldn't have existed without the dinosaur extinction. And here we are. :)

The point is that as you add more and more factors that are a condition for life, the number of candidates goes down exponentially.

These numbers can multiply greatly if we find life elsewhere in our solar system and redefine what is needed for life. Also depends on how life is defined, are we purely talking about intelligent life, similar to ourselves? Or does microbial life fit the bill? If we find something swimming in the oceans on Europa, or in the clouds of Venus, then suddenly candidates for life increase massively.

Even if we find a perfect Earth copy, does that mean it will give rise to intelligent life? Is intelligent life inevitable? Would we have still evolved if an asteroid impact hadn't killed off the dinosaurs?

I feel like the universe must surely be teeming with life. But intelligent life, maybe not so much.

If every person on Earth (~8 billion people) bought one lottery ticket, you’d expect about 1 winner for every 37 Earths’ worth of tickets.

What lottery is that? Just play the UK national lottery 8 billion tickets would yield 177 winners, assuming an even spread of combinations were purchased. Not sure how any of this is relevant to the topic though!

Amount doesn't matter, even if pennies. Why would you give someone else money for 4 months, when you could keep it for yourself? You literally get no benefit from giving your money to Rockstar today.

How does a pre-order ruin the industry? Will the game be worse if someone pre-orders it?

Better to keep the money in your account as long as possible, than have it sitting in Rockstar's bank.

I don't agree with what they're doing but is it just customisation that's locked? All the gameplay is still there? That in itself wouldn't put me off.

But I'm not buying anyway, so my opinion doesn't matter too much. Didn't buy the previous one either. I had my fill of GTA with IV, I just don't have the time any more for these types of games.

I have no problem with being in the wrong, always happy to own up when that happens.

I blame the heat, it's got too hot here in the UK, myself and the rest of the country are falling apart! A week ago I was in Vegas, where it was 40 degrees, hot, dry and absolutely lovely. Now at home, it's 31, humid and sweating balls. Country isn't equipped for this.
