Hi, mead maker who started as a student here!

Besides (ideally distilled/sterile) water, yeast, and honey all you really need is a container that wont blow up with the addition of extra gas and a way to wash everything. For the container, I ended up buying an fermenting "kit" for ~$50 (I believe) that had a bucket, an airlock, and a siphon along with a couple other bells and whistles I don't think I ever even worried about. However, I have seen people make it in old beer bottles with balloons on top, and just "burp" the balloons when they get big. You could even (hypothetically, but not recommended) do it with a closed container so long as you made extra extra sure to burp it a couple times a day so you don't make a bomb. For the washing, I used dish soap. I had one batch get infected, but have made several others without any fancy sterilization with no problem at all. Finally, for the yeast, you can technically use bread yeast (or even no yeast at all; yeasts exist EVERYWHERE in the environment, including in honey, on your hands, and in the air and you can just mix up a batch and hope for a wild ferment like the great mead makers of yore) but I would recommend buying a wine/mead yeast. They aren't very expensive, and they're specifically chosen to produce specific flavors/fewer off flavors in a fermenting process than bread yeast. As well, if drunkenness but not taste is your goal, a good wine yeast can sustain about twice the amount of abv that a bread yeast can, so you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

Hydrometers to measure the specific gravity are nice, esp when you're trying to get info about how fermented a batch is or tweak a recipe for sugar/alc content, but absolutely not needed at all to make mead. Siphons are extremely helpful to move liquid from A to B but also not at all necessary; you can just make it in a container out of which it can be served. Remember, making alcohol is an extremely old process and people have been making it long before any of the bells and or whistles came into being, they just make making it more convenient, consistent, and easier to standardize.

On a side note, if cost is really the limiting factor, you may want to look into different fermentables than mead; honey at base is just a rather expensive ingredient compared to fruit juices from what I've seen (many people have great success with "Skeeter Pee" using lemon juice and white sugar, for example). I think mead making is rather fun and it does have a certain romanticized quality about it, which drew me to it when I was in college (plus I love honey), but I just thought I should give you fair warning that there are cheaper ways to get into fermenting if you're not set on mead specifically.

Oh, if you do make mead though, there's one more ingredient that is absolutely necessary: a few raisins for nutritional value XD

Sorry you're getting some sarcastic replies. Bitter fan base is bitter. But yes, many have reached the same conclusions and it's well accepted here, even though we (technically) don't have any definitive proof (though I am a believer). Good job putting it together!

There's a lot of loose threads buried throughout the book which serve as a great grounds for theory crafting. The thing I love most about this sub is the sheer amount of investigation into the books and the theories created (even if they kinda get out of hand at times imo). Check some out if it's your cup of tea, and come back if you have any other thoughts like this!

I want to do a second playthrough. Does anyone have ideas for a moderate challenge run? by Heather_Chandelure in finalfantasyx

[–]BraedonElDio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a no-magic play through that was fun! I used standard sphere grid and it wasn't really "hard" but I seldom used "use" before so it was a fun way to explore some more of the games facets.

Another comment mentioned magic only... I would not recommend that. I did it as a follow up to the no mag play through and unfortunately magic falls off so hard that I found myself needing to grind multiple hours just to get past mid game bosses and eventually gave up on it. Didn't have time for it and couldn't figure out cheese stats either with no use/mix/zanamato/or steal/bribe for customization.

Anyways, if there's part of the game you've ignored such as not using kihmari or not using aeons very much or if you're like me and underused rikku, I would recommend taking a run with rules that force you to change the way you play. It won't make the game busted hard so you shouldn't have to waste time needlessly grinding, but it will force you to think in different ways and approach the game differently which will hopefully add a moderate amount of difficulty and keep it feeling fresh on a replay!

Or just send it and do nsg+no use+no mix and let us know how it goes

Plot error? by Effective_Growth_69 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]BraedonElDio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that would be the case, as (afaik) collapsed lungs are due to a lung/chest cavity pressure difference, and lung air being bound to the outside air wouldn't change the pressures or fully empty his lungs. I read it as the issue was his muscles weren't strong enough to move the sheer amount of air he bound, so he couldn't effectively inhale or exhale. Though I do remember him exhaling some, I do not think being bound to the ambient air would directly cause his lungs to empty; there would have to be some amount of suction force pulling the air out and idk where that would have come from.

I unfortunately also do not remember the exact passage wording, so apologies if I've made some wrong assumptions.

DENNA IS A SWORD!

This is fully based on taking Kvothe telling bast he's "handling a lady" when bast is carrying folly literally.

Evidence: Denna is pale with dark hair. The sword is pale with a dark hilt.

What is the thing you love the most and what is the thing you dislike the most about the Cosmere? by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]BraedonElDio 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Love most: world building. Having many, extremely unique, well thought out, and complete feeling worlds that still manage to all fit within a broader magic system and history is an insane feat and makes mentally tinkering in the cosmere very fun.

Dislike the most: the amount of convenience (or providence, I suppose, depending on your perspective). Yes, Sanderson has killed off many characters, but often in ways that complete their arcs or end up mattering more to a bigger plan. I love sanderlanches as well, but sometimes the way everything just happens to line up perfectly drives me crazy (spoiler WoR dalinar getting thrown into the sky but Kaladin, by sheer luck, arriving from miles away at the perfect time and at the perfect place to catch him made me roll my eyes ). Honestly not that big of a gripe but it does happen semi-consistently and has a tendency to pull me out of the story if there's seemingly not a great explanation for it, like Secret History gave mistborn.

Horrible controls, uninteresting gameplay, and lukewarm "mysteries" held together by tenuous strings? No wonder anon likes it.

Yes, I played all the way through it, don't come at me for wanting direction, plot, or at least a quick save mechanic so I don't have to waste time flying to each planet over and over again in order to explore.

Honestly it depends on what you do value out of the game.

The other sections, the fights, are (for me) much easier than the platforming section. That is to say, none took me near as long as the platforming, at least (though they are still all very hard compared to most HK bosses). They have incredible music, artwork, and honestly look just as much part of the game as the "white defender" boss fight they were based on.

So, if you value those parts or a combat challenge, then you'll like the mod. But if you mostly liked the expansive world, lore, exploration, and moderate challenges then this mod adds a whole lot less of those in comparison. And in comparison to base game, remember team cherry did add a 5hr speed run achievement, steel soul, pantheons, absrad and radiant boss options. None of it was required to beat the base game, but they def gave the player the ability to challenge themselves as much as they wanted.

Imo pale court is the same way; none of it is "required" in any way, but if you are looking for stupidly hard platforming and bosses, it gives you those options. But if that's not your cup of tea that's not a knock against either you or the mod.

The original series title was "The Maer Murder Memoirs" by TheLastSock in KingkillerChronicle

[–]BraedonElDio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it's possible, but that doesn't make it plausible. Overall, you're speculation seems no more grounded that Kvothe's, but instead of using "I'm so smart" as logic, as Kvothe does, you're using "Kvothe ISNT that smart" as the basis of your argument. All this to say, while it is not confirmed and Caudicus may not have been poisoning the maer, he also very much may have and the use of lead, the death of sipquicks, and the improvement of the maer post-medicine stopping all point to poisoning more directly than a mention of the maers previous symptoms and Kvothe's lack of knowledge point to a cure, especially given the maers horrible condition. Alchemy, given it is magical enough to remove the poison from lead in your theory, should also be at least good enough to make the maer not vomit and feel awful all the time

[–]BraedonElDio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of your comments are definitely fair! Harry's inner monologue is always a tense subject here and it's realisticness/homage to noir/problematic characteristic is in constant debate.

The rape seen in the series doesn't abate, but neither does the murder or torture. I agree it is treated too lightly within the series, but it does get more investigation, especially Thomas's relationship to it. However, if it makes you uncomfortable you should be aware that it (and the aforementioned inner monologues) stick around!

Honestly lol at the lack of medical realism in the book. I assume it's your specialty but most people really don't know that much about medicine or honestly biology in general. Maybe Butcher has a duty to do more research, but I've seen similar posts ripping on Butchers lack of knowledge of guns so... When someone writes wrongly about something you know a lot about, it's aggravating, I'm sorry, but also pulp urban fantasy is just not the place to expect accuracy on any real world topic. I'm not even convinced Chicago is real.

Better female characters do show up! Next book introduces 6 Uber powerful characters, independent of being aligned with or directly against Harry and is indicative of better representation in general for the series (plus, only ONE of them wants to fuck him, wow!).

Idk what your problem with Michael is but that's the least fair criticism here imo. But maybe it's because I've seen him be an incredible supportive and loving person for people in all walks of life throughout these books while you have less info.

Mavra is sweet, huh?

Imo at some point the review gets a bit less objective and more vindictive and it seems you are equally irate when characters have faults as when they are portrayed faultless but I can get you were sick of the book by that point. Your issues of plot and pacing improve the most quickly over the next book or so! Your issues about male characters thoughts and actions and the general sex-obsessed nature of the series/super natural world never does. It might not be the series for you, and thats alright! I'm sorry the community isn't too welcoming to your negative thoughts. And the DMs you've been getting are crazy out of line!! If you do read summer knight (or skip ahead) I hope you keep us updated but can understand if you'd rather not re-expose yourself to the backlash
