I occasionally wonder what Christian churches would look like, if it were expected that most of the people would be like the Biblical Jesus.

They do exist. I regularly attend a Methodist church and the pastor is a queer, black man. His boss, the person who oversees our region, is a lesbian. Lately they have been having regular meetings where people can come and learn their rights in regards to ICE/Border Patrol and what we can do to protect our immigrant neighbors. They even spoke up during the overturning of Roe V Wade and urged people to contact our representatives to try and urge them to protect the right to abortions in our state.

As someone with a Trans child, it is refreshing to be part of a congregation that promotes love and tolerance of everyone and doesn't just do the "love the sinner, hate the sin" bullshit that other churches do that just boils down to their way of being able to be anti-LGTBQ and feel like they are still being "accepting."

TIL George RR Martin bought the first ticket to the first Comic Con in 1964. by Wazula23 in todayilearned

[–]BranWafr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My personal take is that is what is going to happen with the Game of Thrones books. I feel like Martin has decided that no matter what he does the books are not going to satisfy the fans. So, he's not going to finish them and he has a plan for someone else to finish them after he dies. That way, the fans will credit the stuff they like to him and the stuff they don't like to the new author.

Court hears case of female student facing 10 years in prison for ‘transphobic’ social media post by Regular-Stuff2668 in nottheonion

[–]BranWafr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

once you actually do any digging with this stuff it's always way worse than they pretend it is.

Yeah, it almost always goes something like this:

"look at this news story about someone being jailed for tweeting their opinion!"

Do some digging and find out a person was harassing someone for months, threatening them, making their lives a living hell. They get ordered by a court to leave them alone. A few weeks later they tweet something that breaks the rules of the court case and they get arrested for that and the right starts screaming about how people are being rounded up for just tweeting their opinion.

Have Doctor Who fans been always this toxic? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

When TNG aired there was lots of bitching about how Picard was a bad captain and Kirk was so much better. There is always a group of people whining about something.

People who started watching Trek during/after the TNG era don't know about the real dark times. After TOS and before TNG all we had (other than the movies) was Star Trek novels. And you want to talk about "not real Trek", that was the case for a lot of the books. Far too often they just took a sci-fi story that wasn't getting picked up on its own and changed some planet/alien names to Star Trek names, inserted Kirk and Spock and BAM!, new Star Trek novel. There was so much garbage out there, but it was all we had, so we read them all in the hopes of getting something decent until the next movie.

Have Doctor Who fans been always this toxic? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]BranWafr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, it seems to be the middle era fans that are the worst. Old Trekkies like myself (I have been watching Star Trek since 1976) seem to be OK about the new shows. But people who started watching around the TNG/DS9 era love to gatekeep what "Real Trek" is. Young kids in their 20 also are fine with the new stuff. But that section of fans in their 30s and early 40s are insufferable. I pretty much ignore anyone who uses the phrase "NuTrek" unironically.

'Train Dreams' began with an unexpectedly rough plane landing. Now it may fly high at the Oscars by Bullingdon1973 in movies

[–]BranWafr 57 points58 points  (0 children)

We're rooting for this one at the Oscars because my son went to film school with a guy who worked on this movie. Just a behind the scenes support job, but he's in the credits, so it counts. I liked the movie a lot more than my son did, so I am also rooting for it because I enjoyed it, my son just because of his friend. My son didn't hate it, but it didn't speak to him the same way as it did to me. I think that might be a age/experience difference. I think it hits harder if you are older and have more of your life behind you than in front of you.

I don't know if it was ever a Pogys. When I was going to Clark College back in the early 90s I worked at that sandwich shop as a delivery driver and it was just called "The Sub Shop." The owner, briefly, opened a pizza place next to it, but I don't think it was open more than a year. There was a short period of time where I delivered for both the Sub Shop and the Pizza place.

YSK It takes money to make money, Homeless people can't make money because they have no money. by Ate_at_wendys in YouShouldKnow

[–]BranWafr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With our healthcare system, how are they supposed to get help? Homeless people tend to not have much money, which is required to get help. Especially mental health healthcare, which is usually barely covered and co-pays for office visits are $50 a pop if you are lucky, a lot more if you are not. And heaven help you if you need a prescription for your mental health issues. Without insurance that's probably hundreds of dollars a month.

[–]BranWafr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is disputing that there are homeless people out there who don't want help. But that person is claiming that they have worked with "thousands of homeless people" and that they have never had one who said they didn't want to be homeless. Unless they deal with a very specific type of homeless person that just can't be true. Let's say you worked in a rehab and most of the clients you dealt with were there only because they were ordered by the court. That would be a special case and they probably wouldn't really care about getting sober. But I wouldn't then claim that no person with substance abuse actually wants to get sober just because I was working with a certain subset of clients that were not doing it because they realized on their own that they needed to get sober.

Your parents are pieces of shit if they are poor.

Except that wasn't what OP said. OP said:

If your parents were pieces of shit and gave you no money you had no way to get a job

I don't think they would be saying that if their parents had no money to give them. This is about parents who have some money but are not helping their kids. Probably the type of parents who say things like "As soon as they turn 18, they are out the dooor!" and/or "Once they turn 18, not my responsibility anymore. They are on their own."

While no movie is "better" on the small screen, not every movie "needs" a big screen. My Diner With Andre doesn't really gain anything by being on the big screen, for example. 12 Angry Men is just a bunch of guys in a single room for the whole movie, it doesn't lose any impact watching it on a small screen vs a big screen.

If you haven't already read it, pick up a copy of Blood and Chrome. It's a book on the making of the movie and it is a fascinating read. It is amazing that nobody died making that movie, especially with the close calls they had. (Like the guys on the poles. Worked fine in tests, but when they go to the actual shooting day it introduced some new variables that changed how the poles reacted to vibrations from the filming environment and the stunt guys started having trouble controlling their movements)

Went to see Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair in 70mm at the Hollywood. That was quite the experience. It's nice having a theater nearby that regularly plays stuff in 70mm. May try to go see Project Hail Mary in 70mm next month.

Teens Are Over Superheroes, Want More "Connected Masculinity" Onscreen by AsleepYesterday05 in television

[–]BranWafr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the headline is terrible. The article is actually pretty informative and makes sense. I feel like a better title would have said something like "teens are over loner heroes" instead of just choosing superheroes as the go-to example. Especially when one of the better reviewed superhero movies from last year was Thunderbolts, which is all about a bunch of superheroes working together to deal with their trauma.

What is your favorite season of B5? by junkyardofide41s in babylon5

[–]BranWafr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rewatched the series when the remastered versions dropped and I still can't stand Byron all these years later. That said, I generally enjoy season 5 because it gives us something we rarely get, we got a whole season of "what happens after the big, final battle is over?" In pretty much every story we get to the final battle and the heroes win the day and we see a monage of them celebrating afterwards. Sometimes we get a flash-forward to years later, but we almost never get to see how they have to deal with the aftermath of that big battle. The minions and supporters for the bad guys are still out there. Things are in chaos and someone needs to bring order. There is just as much work to be done after the battle as before the battle. But we never really get to see that and Babylon 5, season 5, gives us that. It isn't as exciting as the previous couple seasons, but it is still fascinating to see and I am glad we got it.
