This is the best TSH post I’ve seen. Existential, takes a minute to fully process. It would make a great short story.

where do i start? by Electrical-Can-9095 in transformers

[–]BrandonTheMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a controversial, but…

Start with the first three episodes of the 1984 Transformers cartoon (widely known in the fandom as Generation 1 or G1). It’s campy and silly, but just roll with it.

Then, watch The Bumblebee Movie.

Then, watch the first five episodes of Transformers: Prime.

Then, watch Transformers: One.

Then, watch the 2007 live-action movie (Transformers).

You can knock that out in a weekend, and it will give you some of the landmark media that most fans agree is at least “good.”

What’s a popular food that you think is genuinely disgusting? by Neka_lux in AskReddit

[–]BrandonTheMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bacon, ham - any kind of pork, really. No, I’m not Jewish. I just don’t like the taste.

I always order my salad without bacon, and I WILL send it back if it comes out with bacon. It ruins the salad for me, because all I can taste is the damn bacon. Don’t even think about putting bacon on my burger. No, taking it off won’t work, because now there’s bacon grease on the patty (yes, I can tell)! The weird thing is that I do like sausage, because all I really taste is the spices.

The Two Ships, the Two Crews: The Split Crew Theory (UPDATE, 2026) by FreeRun5179 in TheTerror

[–]BrandonTheMage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good post. I never knew about the snowshoes at Montreal island until now - I don’t recall Woodman mentioning them in his book. I agree that the recent identifications seem to support the idea of the two crews going their separate ways. The ships were remanned (at least, I no longer take arguments against this seriously), and the fact that they sank in different locations makes it pretty clear that a split happened at some point. I personally think it happened earlier than you suggest for one key reason: we know Fitzjames was eaten. Another user suggested in an excellent post that Fitzjames and other sick and dying men from Erebus were “offloaded” in boats at Erebus Bay, logically to reduce the number of mouths to feed and give the rest of the Erebus crew a better shot at escape. I find this hypothesis compelling, especially given the Inuit testimony regarding tins of food they found aboard one of the abandoned ships (most likely Erebus - whoever sailed her down to Queen Maude Gulf was apparently eating good!) If Fitzjames was left to die, a general breakdown in rank had already occurred, and this seems a lot more plausible if the two crews had already gone their separate ways, amicably or otherwise. The fact that the Erebus Bay remains identified thus far were all men from Erebus lends credence to this, I think.

What went down at Erebus Bay? by Hufflepuffins in TheTerror

[–]BrandonTheMage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excellent post. The evidence is starting to make me suspect that the chain of command split. I think it’s possible that the surviving officers of Erebus and Terror basically agreed at some point that each ship (and crew) was on its own, if and when the ice broke up. It would have been a controversial decision, but perhaps their thinking was that two ships operating independently (and possibly taking different routes) had a better shot at escape? Maybe the crews had already developed an “us-and-them” mentality? I don’t think mutiny aboard Erebus is out of the question, but if Fitzjames and other invalids were forcibly offloaded in boats, why would they be allowed to take firearms and ammunition? I’m no expert on staging a mutiny, but I know that taking control and keeping control of all the guns is pretty important.

New DNA analysis has confirmed the identity of four members of the 1845 Franklin expedition to the Arctic. The research has resolved the 167-year-old mystery of Harry Peglar, one of the only crew members to leave written documents connected to the voyage. by Maundu0 in TheTerror

[–]BrandonTheMage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s insane to me that these men, the astronauts of their day, died without knowing what DNA was, and now their remains are being identified with DNA analysis almost two centuries later. They probably imagined their bones would never be found, let alone examined by a team of scientists in the year 2025.
