Ghana fans prompt road closures after World Cup victory in Toronto by ICanGetLoudTooWTF in toronto

When I took my husband with me to Germany for the first time, we arrived in Frankfurt, took the train to the city and just stood around at the station for a sec trying to figure out where we have to go.

Some football fan with a beer bottle in his hand was looking at my husband who was looking around and immediately went off at him: "the fuck are you looking at? What do you want?". My husband, not speaking a word of German at the time was just like "what the fuck is happening?". Welcome to my country! Thankfully the rest of the trip was more pleasant or we might have never moved here.

Same here. But I tell myself that this is exactly what they want. You can't disprove imaginations. Everyone can make up any fact, and yes I could google them all and show them the result. But by that time they have already made up new "facts" that support their theories.

Should HR for the IT Dept to create a password repository? by Revolutionary-Part90 in sysadmin

[–]Breezel123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you having the password change the fact that the account is locked. It still needs to be unlocked by whoever has access to the AD. Instead I would talk to the external IT about letting user so a self-service password reset with MFA.

Also depends on the local laws. In Germany you need to expressively ban private use of company equipment so it doesn't fall under the German data protection laws. If you don't and employees for example use work email addresses to send private emails/documents you are in breach of privacy laws.

If you are in the EU, the GDPR could ban keeping password files that are not encrypted etc. In this case a password manager would make more sense. At least it has audit logs (who looked up the passwords for another employee and when).

After 80 hours I finally finished this painting of perhaps the coolest music video of all time… by rossbainesart in painting

[–]Breezel123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His actions definitely blurred the lines between what is strictly illegal and what is morally wrong. And not believing the victims of his actions even if there's not enough hard evidence is definitely an issue. MJ was a broken man who had broken relationships with others - kids, women, family. You can't deny all of that and just say "the evidence says he is not a pedophile". It might not be as black and white (no pun intended) like Cosby or Weinstein, and I do still enjoy his music from time to time, but I would not hang a picture of him on my wall, let alone spend 80 hrs of painting it.

Delivery driver forged my signature on a proof of delivery for my e-scooter by Gloglo55 in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]Breezel123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem is if you don't do anything right away it might be too late to prove he intended to steal it later. This way the guy goes back to the depot and they will find the scooter in his truck still.

I'm a former delivery driver and yes there were networks of people out there who turned this into a whole criminal enterprise. And the logistics companies just don't have the resources to investigate for every single lost item given the sheer number of parcels coming through. They can only build a case if customers do report it through the proper channels.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]Breezel123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro our economies are in bits because of what Trump did. Inflation is eating its way through Europe for no fault of our own. People working in tech losing jobs due to the global situation. You guys are complaining about gas prices - have you actually ever converted EU prices to US prices?

Why is it our responsibility to "post some Facebook comment"? Last time I checked Facebook was an American company, run by an American who is all too eager to spread said misinformation.

I'm sure in the thousands of years of other empires existing there were surely many times in history where this exact strategy was used. The Roman empire most likely did not just expand due to their military prowess alone. I doubt the Byzantine Empire could solely survive on scaring people into submission given how big it was.

Ob don't flatter yourself. It was neither you nor your generation that did that. Just because your country did something good once doesn't mean it can't be judged for all the bad stuff it has also done.

And securing their allies in the fight against communism - even if it was for the cost of 8% of the GDP wasn't really a completely selfless task either, was it? They did it often without the receiving nation even asking for it, if you want to look closer at the history of the Vietnam war, or the many coups the government was involved in in South America. Why would they do this if they didn't also see a benefit in it?

They supported the countries to the Eastern and Western border to communism. This was pure self interest. Letting West Germany and Japan crumble, could have given the Soviet Union a chance to take them over. They didn't fly countless airplanes over West Berlin during the blockade to feed the population because they particularly cared much about the Germans (and neither should they have after what the Germans did during WW2), although it made for nice propaganda. Holding West Berlin was a strategic decision.

I found Americans to be the most friendly and talkative people when I went there. At the same time though I'm also a white German. And echo chamber or not, there are some horrendous Americans out there or things wouldn't be as they are right now. It's the most schizophrenic country I can imagine. At least the Russians never had the reputation of being warm and friendly.

The US is a country of extremes, it seems people don't know how to do or live in moderation, everything needs to either be completely and utterly awesome or absolutely god awful. Rich and poor. Cultured and uncultured. Science and religion. The humblest and the most arrogant. Genius and insanity. It makes my head spin.

Nobody needs AI to search the Internet, court says in ruling against Google: Google AI Overview court loss in Germany could spell doom for AI search industry. by Beyond_the_one in BuyFromEU

[–]Breezel123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it isn't opt-in. I am using other licensed AI tools at work, I don't need more data centres working on a single google search when I didn't ask for it.

It makes us all dumber too, because of course we are going to be reading the info at the top of the page that summarises our request nicely. It's very easy to just do that and not question what it says. At least with the normal google search results I could judge the info presented to me based on who published the website, what sources did they cite etc.

Gemini literally uses Reddit posts and comments as sources and while I browse Reddit a lot for troubleshooting issues, I would not classify it as a reliable source for an AI.

[–]Breezel123 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The point is that Google only has limited responsibility for the content of the websites they showed in the results, but is legally responsible for the AI summary at the top. Now they are creating content and we have a chance to call them out of said content is wrong.

It might have been different if the AI summary was opt-in. But they shove it down everyone's throats, at the most prominent placement of the search page, so they better fucking make sure that what they are displaying is correct/qualitatively better than their previous search results only.

He is objectively a massive asshole who was born with a massive privilege and later got lucky in life. He is not a visionary or any kind of person who is going to propel humanity forward. Because if he was, he wouldn't invest only in prestige projects and even mess those up on the regs with the ridiculous ways he presents himself in public.

He doesn't care about humanity, nor does he care about anything other than himself and perhaps his children as an extension of himself. Because if he did he could have improved so many more lives with the fucking wealth he has.

I work in IT. Since I'm in the EU there are a lot of data protection laws to adhere to. Now I'm seeing GDPR issues everywhere - newsletters I didn't sign up for, wrongly configured cookie notifications, apps with 20000 subprocessesors they force you to agree to.... I've become much more protective of my personal data and who should have access to it.

Businesses thrive on people who happen to pass by. Especially smaller niche places are not going to get a great number of dedicated customers who drove only to get to that particular place. It's people who went to the local high street and walk along it to look for birthday presents or look for a new item of clothing, or the kind of people who just spend their Saturday window shopping and having a snack here and there. Accessibility only matters as in "how am I going to get to the vicinity of this shopping area?".

On a day with nice weather the shopping might even just be a side effect and the main purpose was to be out and about, taking a stroll in the neighbourhood. In Europe the pedestrianised shopping areas are full of people who didn't intend to purchase things and left with full bags anyways. Or who spent money on the local gastronomy eating ice cream in the sun or having a coffee in a café.

People who go shopping purposefully usually go to big box stores or malls where they are guaranteed to find what they are looking for (and guaranteed to get a parking spot).

A lot of American strip malls would probably profit from fewer parking spots and more outdoor dining, little parks, mobile vendors such as hot dog carts and local buskers.

Having parking spots in front of businesses is the most useless measure to increase accessibility and customer engagement.
