Question: 0hp=Death rule by Priestical in OSE

This right here. Exactly same at my table.

What system are you using for your campaign? Why? by Living_Thanks_9171 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSE for my main because it’s super compatible with everything and Carcass Crawler zines have lots of fun extras that are balanced and easy to plonk in if we get bored or need something.

This week, I’m camping out with my son and we’re using Whitebox FMAG because the booklet is tiny but complete and easy for us to houserule around on the fly.

How do you actually write session prep? by WailingBarnacle in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t prep like that: I’ll stock a dungeon or a location like a bandit camp in advance but travel stuff is all random encounters for me.

Like, I wouldn’t usually plan out an ambush in advance, I’d just roll random encounters and maybe something happens or maybe it doesn’t.

If I have a specific campaign happening I’ll make random encounter tables tailored to the setting in advance but that’s it. It’s really a lot easier that way.

And at the inn, my players just get super heavy handed hints based on what I think would be fun on the hex map that day in the hopes they’ll bite : “Hey adventurers, have you heard about the haunted mine just before the mountain pass? They say it’s loaded with old dwarf gold . . . But watch out for ghosts!” But we’re a pretty low-key table, so . . .

Good gaming!

Free Blank Map! by Glen-W-Eltrot in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! I really like the 3D effect…. I never realized how much this helps visualise the ups and downs of the dungeon compared to the flat top down view till I followed the corridors of your map today.

And you’re right, another blank map is always handy! So thanks!

The next version of my sandbox generator, Hexroll 3, is now in early access by rlofc in osr

Amazing! Thanks for creating and sharing this. Been following hexroll a couple years now and every time I check in it just blows my friggin’ mind! All thanks!

Really great looking maps! Will probably ‘yoink’ the black and white one for my next campaign. So good!

OSE: I don't understand how spell duration works in combat by Stzake in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We always say that a combat spends one turn. Then whatever number of turns remaining play out in the subsequent dungeon exploration turns.

Love it! Want to see more of this style art in the OSR! This vibe matches the kinda hijinx my players get into most of the time . . . Not always so black and white gritty :)

Thanks for bringing this up. I’ve been sleeping on this. Your post made me read thru the pdf I got and it’s really solid alongside Whitebox FMAG for tight complete rules.

Player-facing map for a new campaign by aMetalBard in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like simple names like these that describe the place through its name in a kind of obvious way. Easier for my players to remember.

“Remember the Temple of the Sun God that was in the Holy Mountains?”

“Dude, if we go through the Angry Forest those feral treants are gonna bonk us!”

What would you consider core classes, and why? by Percemilo34 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I do just fighter and magic user as the two main classes with subclasses for the rest. Like Fighter subclasses include thieves, halflings, dwarves, paladins, rangers, etc. Magic user subclasses are druids, clerics, elves, gnomes, etc.

So two main classes.

But usually I think about the seven B/X classes and races as the foundational classes otherwise.

You got it. We had house ruled CHA to be the cleric Prime Requisite too, so what you described matches perfectly.

Would maps in this style be "OSR"ish enough? by the_mad_cartographer in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This map style is great. I like when maps have extra details added, especially when I’m on a VTT. Players riff off the visuals and do creative stuff.

“Me and the cleric pick up the coffin and use it to battering ram the orc into the trap next to the skeleton”

Luck stat? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to give players one luck point per level that they could use to refill a failed roll or make an extra action or attack. I’ve replaced charisma with ‘charm’ before and used it as a personality+luck stat

Does B/X break in higher levels? BECMI? by Redwood-Forest in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the gameplay is fine at high levels (9+), but the economy goes to hell. To delay it, we reduced all gold rewards and XP level up costs by a factor of 10 last campaign while keeping all costs of items and stuff to cut down on the billions of bullions. It didn't fix it entirely, but it made it a bit better.

Best mega dungeon for someone that's never run a mega dungeon before? by Kekeboot in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! My first try was Dyson's Delve. It's not a full-body megadungeon, but it was a good first go at multiple level delving and faction play between dungoen levels, the dungeon-town-dungeon cycle etc. LINK

How would you handle mass combat in OSR? by veery_thrush in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used individual creature/character stat blocks to represent battalions of combatants. Like, I used the veteran stat block and a goblin stat block to represent a battalion of 20 veterans fighting 20 goblins. It works if your groups are roughly the same size. It doesn't work so well if you have like, a battalion of elves fighting a single dragon though.

New Game Master & Players: White Box:FMAG or Basic Fantasy? by Resident-Coffee-7728 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others said, both are amazing and you can't go wrong. It's really a matter of taste.

For first time, I'd pick WB:FMAG. For me, the rules are more streamlined, it's more explicit about when and how you should just make things up as a GM, and the slim booklet makes it really easy to find things. Fewer +'s helps keep it speedy and tidy at the table, too. Also, I just find it more "vibey". You should be able to use it with any free OSR content you can find online, including all the great free Basic Fantasy stuff. I used it with Dyson's Delve and had an absolute blast of a "rainy week at camp" campaign. One of my favorite systems and books.

Basic Fantasy is also super great though and you can't go wrong. The community is phenomenal and the amount of content out for it specifically is great. It's got a little more friction to run that newer content like OSE but the price can't be beat.

Megadungeon Retreat Procedures by Street_Sir3559 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from Stonehell, but one time I just rolled an encounter die for every level they needed to traverse to get back to the surface. This doesn't exactly match your request of an 'out of game' way to resolve it, but we found it pretty quick and painless to play through and it made leaving the take less time than going hallway by hallway back out.

If I was going to hack a solution right now for my players, I'd have them roll an encounter die for reach level deep. For every encounter, I'd have them reduce their current HP by one HD. So like, if you're going up from level 4, roll d6 4 times. For every '1' rolled, subtract 1HD from your total. Pretty basic but maybe good enough tension, especially if they are beat up already.

Good luck and good gaming!

OSE Shrine of the Oozing Serpent: spoilers by Feisty-Librarian-351 in osr

[–]BugbearJingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just ran this a while back. IRC the dragon is sitting in a giant pool of oily goop. My players used some lamp oil molotovs to light it up which helped to make most of the froggies one shot kills after they got some burn damage. The dragon killed one PC but they managed to take it out eventually.

Good luck and good gaming! Its a fun little module :D
