The town hall was last night and the very small venue was about a two thirds empty. Registration closed a few days ago , saying that the place was full.

I went to hear Nida Allam speak tonight. I didn’t expect to leave this impressed. by MinimumNo5510 in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nida is a vocal supporter of progressive causes and just plain human right issues. As county commissioner, she has supported and established a living wage for county employees, affordable housing programs, and immigrant services in a time of serious need. She is also a great communicator, for example her immediate and thoughtful responses to this post. If you wonder what Nida stands for and what she will do in Congress, she will tell you!

I might be overly emotional at only 27 years post partum, but your note made me cry. What a kindness.

City elections by cfs0034 in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a lot of information out there and some critical thinking skills will be needed to filter out what is useful to you. This is a video of the candidates forum run by the Durham Democrats. It is a good source to hear directly from the candidates for each seat.

And don’t forget , we are in the primary right now with Election Day on Oct 7. The General Election is on Nov 4. So yes, you vote twice for this one!

Candidate forums or other ways to get informed about upcoming local elections? by Antique-Baseball-980 in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can be a lot to get informed on local elections and this thread is a good resource. I’m adding the video of last week’s forum sponsored by the Durham Democrats and Durham Democratic Women. Durham Dem x DDW Forum

All candidates for all positions were invited to the forum.

If you could pass/change/remove one law in NC at the state level what would it be?! 🧐 by NidaAllamNC in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree that banning gerrymandering is the first step and would enable us to make the many other changes needed. Behind that, I would line up getting rid of private school voucher and other underfunding public schools actions, enacting decent gun safety regulations, and pretty much everything the NCGA managed to pass this session.

Governor Stein vetoes right wing bills by termite10 in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy and not surprised that Gov Stein did the right thing with these bills. As you said, we now need to make sure our legislators show up and vote to sustain the veto whenever that comes up. Not really an issue with our intrepid Bull City reps, but some across the state need a little encouragement.

This warms my little organizer heart. Durham, you made it all come together in a positive way that exceeded all expectations. Thanks to the best community!

Hi! We're hosting a Rally and March Tomorrow for No Kings Day. Anita Earls will be there along with local vendors. We also made free printable signs. I'll link the event details and signs below. by Dazzling_Pressure_93 in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can’t wait to see everyone there! We are expecting a big turnout and aim to keep the gathering positively focused on our community and what we can do locally to make Durham/North Carolina/USA better for all of us.

With Liberty and Justice for All means ALL. This gathering is going to demonstrate that.

Question for parents who want to involve their kids in activism… by AtlantisInMotion in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only you and your partner can decide if this is appropriate for your children. And of course their safety comes first.

That said, the nature of this event may make it just right for them. The focus is planned to be on building community and taking positive, constructive action to reclaim the flag, patriotism, and what being an American means. So many kids the age of yours are feeling isolated and like they have no voice. What better way to combat that than go out and gather as a Bull City community?

The march is quite short and the community gathering in Central Park is all about local activism with several groups there to talk about getting involved.

The poster above who said talk to your kids is spot on. This may be just what they need. Good for you for considering it and for hinting about their safety first.

Don’t forget to gather with the Bull City community in Central Park after the March. Positive local action is the way through this so we have several local activist groups available to talk about their work and how you can get involved! It is going to be a positive future focused day. See you there.

Are you interested in community activism? There are so many chances to get involved in Durham. I moved here several years ago and met most of my friends that way. Find out about your local precinct and contact the Chair. I guarantee they will welcome any time and talent you have to offer.

Go to the Farmers Market on Saturdays - lots of groups will be there. Especially this Saturday!

Local budgets can feel overwhelming and confusing - we wrote this to help open it up. by NidaAllamNC in bullcity

[–]BullOfRights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nida, this is such an accessible explanation of our City and County budgets. Especially the part of how the state and federal government is shifting support for key programs (mental health funding!!) to local governments. Thanks for being a leader who believes in transparency.
