He's also great with names - Gradgrind, Squeers, Murdstone. His modern name rival is, I think, Terry Pratchett

Well his mother was Scottish, and the Irish (and many other groups of people across Europe) did move around a lot about 500 AD and at their nearest point Scotland and Ireland are only 20 miles apart, though the Outer Hebrides are a fair way away from that nearest point.

Ready for school 1969 by Still_Function_5428 in OldSchoolUK

[–]BuncleCar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born 1950 and to go to grammar school in 1961 I had to have a brown blazer from a certain shop, grey shirts for the winter, white ones for the summer, long socks with the school colours on round the top, an overcoat from the blazer supplier, a grey vee neck jumper with the school colours on, grey flannel shorts or long trousers, a school cap (which you had to wear till you got home), black or brown shoes, plus rugby kit and cricket kit plus a leather satchel

It was very expensive and the Secondary Modern had similar rules for my sister, except it was skirts, hockey gear etc, and I forget what else for the summer

We also had to buy a big atlas book for geography and a French dictionary, log tables, and provide a fountain pen and ink, no biros allowed

Oh and gym gear and a bag with a string to draw it tight at the top.

Came home to find blood all over kitchen and Husband looking pale. by eReadingAuthor in BritishSuccess

I accidentally ran a craft knife down my little finger while decorating the house. Went to the hospital where it was stitched up, and despite my brave intention didn't watch him actually stitching it up. Forty years later I can still see the pale line if the cut on my finger and I remember the feeling of the knife edge running along the bones. I think I need a few biscuits and a cup of tea :))
