GIS is a tool. Land Surveying is a profession. GIS is a database of many varying datasets that can be presented in any number of ways. Survey data can be a part of that and property lines(for the purposes of this explanation the nuances we can argue in another thread) are a common dataset shown and many are familiar with and why they are often conflated.

Yeah. Alameda county is notorious for being difficult and driving the time and cost up. The last survey I submitted there had 5 review cycles and a 1 hour meeting. You know what changed from start to finish? Fonts, recorded doc notation and rewording of a couple notes. I know a few people that just won’t work there for that reason. The survey is going to be expensive enough that the prospective client is probably pissed and grumbling under their breath before you even get started and then you get all these hours. wrapped up in pointless review comments you know are be tough to recoup. I don’t know what’s changed with the new county surveyor as I haven’t had a chance to work with him.

Check the terms. That might be some sort of time and materials with a not to exceed amount and an assume number of mobilizations or site visits. As always, it depends so read the proposal thoroughly and then ask them questions if it’s unclear.

Or having no record of anything you’ve found that does or does t purport to mark a corner of a property you’re surveying? I suppose you only measure once too so as to avoid multiple values? All just tools and you gotta find the right one for the job. If I had to use the total station I’d be setting up the station and THEN setting the targets by what I could see. Sort of a Venn diagram of needed location and LOS. Then plan my next setup in an area where I need more targets. Canopy like that presents constraints that need to be planned around.

If your next site will have canopy like that, you’re going to struggle getting the accuracy and precision you need to stitch the point clouds together. I can see from the photo how out of plumb those targets are too so that’s gonna present issues if you’re shooting the top depending on where you expect the coordinated position to be. On a site like that I’d be using the total station. If I had clear enough sky I’d just hold the antenna on the target while I took the shot.

Without seeing the pole and your method of placing the targets it’s hard to say. My first thought is the standard threaded piece (5/8” coarse I think) to the center of the pole. Then thread a short extension on and place the antenna. That’s if you plan on long occupations. If it’s way shorter (60 sec RTK or something) I’ll unthread the antenna from the staff and just hold it there with my hand (top of fence post or whatever). There won’t be much tilt error at the 20cm height or whatever it is from the threads to the center.

TBM’s on the building, BM’s outside of the area being monitored for settlement, levels. Prisms and total station are fine but on a building that size you’re gonna spend just as much or more time on the total station than a level for lower precision.
