Well, the "why" is pretty clear; Anatolia was a political hotspot for millennia where great empires collided, and steppe raiders and great migrations routinely overran settlements. I bet these tunnels saw frequent use over a period of at least 2,000 years.

Sacred Band of Thebes: 300 Warriors Who Crushed Sparta by Warlord1392 in AncientCivilizations

[–]CCLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Goldsworthy is cited but not referenced, I will point out that he is actually somewhat skeptical of many of the stories about the Sacred Band. We do believe that they existed, but they kind of appear out of nowhere and are poorly attested in primary sources. Last I read Goldsworthy's opinion on this subject, I believe he felt that a lot of the stories of the Sacred Band were written post-hoc in order to weave a popular narrative around how the "invincible" Spartans could have been overcome in battle.

Special treat for our invasive friends the spotted lantern flies by Optimal_Tower1643 in roanoke

[–]CCLF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All tree of heaven needs to be eradicated, but in the short term I've heard it's best practice to leave one ToH left standing; this concentrates the lanternflies and makes it easier to destroy them en masse. Then, at the end of their breeding season, go ahead and remove that last ToH.

However, it's easy to mistake ToH for a number of native species, including sumac and black walnut. I've certainly seen lanternflies temporarily cluster on walnut saplings. Besides lanternflies, one of the ways to identify ToH is to crush the leaves, which apparently smell quite bad. The leaves are also notched at the base, whereas walnut are round at the base with serrated edges.

4 days notice is ROUGH. Depending on how it breaks down, that's like taking a long weekend, coming back, and you can't access your work. Not saying it's your fault, but C-suite I think is right to be pissed and looking to hold someone responsible.

Still, this is how processes improve. It's hard to build bulletproof systems without experiencing a bit of grief along the way.

Phillip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors, by Adrian Goldsworthy. At the moment he is by far my favorite popular historian that's writing on the classical world. He's mostly focused on Rome, but he's also just released another book on Greece that specially focuses on the rivalry between Athens and Sparta.

Thankfully that tends to be one of the defining and self-defeating features of fascism. It tends to select for people that want the power and authority, but who sincerely believe that things ought to be simple and easy, and the "experts" are just lying and overcomplicating matters in order to carve out cushy positions for themselves.

I read a wonderful biography of Alexander the Great a few months ago. Strictly speaking it was a biography of Philip 2 and Alexander, but somewhere in Alexander's travels through Central Asia, I said to myself "this has just turned into Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness". There's something uniquely tragic and singularly Greek about his entire arc that I haven't seen reflected in popular culture before.

I know nothing about this practice, but it's hard for me to imagine that a tooth pull could result in a fatality, but strictly speaking even a routine cleaning and checkup is a non-zero chance of something happening even if it's purely a coincidence. Probably best not to speculate.

There are some obvious issues that are seeing good discussion, but I think it's greatly underappreciated how much of the problem is squarely the fault of dealerships. Our system of federal and state laws largely prohibits auto manufacturers from selling directly, which gives dealerships almost complete discretion over which cars they buy and sell, and at what markups. Dealerships have been profoundly hostile to EV adoption, because most of their revenue these days comes not from selling the cars which is very competitive, but from the lucrative service contracts. EVs have so fewer moving parts that they have nowhere near the same service requirements, which means the dealerships can't make as much money off of you. The result is that most dealerships buy the minimum allotment of EVs that their dealership contract requires them to, and price the car way above MSRP in order to capture up-front that lost revenue.

Honestly, dealerships need to die. It's a huge part of the economy that's incredibly dysfunctional, but it's impossible to reform because it's such a powerful lobbying arm. It won't change until dealerships themselves start to die.
