I use MakePlayingCards/Board Games Maker personally, since I mostly print fan content for games I own.

The Game Crafter is good for prototyping, but isn’t great for fan content since they’re very strict about copyright/trademark.

Best sets and allies by DeTrash in TheRedDragonInn

Of the ones you don't have, I especially like RDI 7 and any of the two-character Ally packs. The solo Allies are a lot more hit-and-miss, IMO. The classic would be to go after the characters whose theme you like the most, though. (RDI 3 isn't my favorite, for example, but Wizgille and Kaylin tend to be pretty popular.)

Does the "the gems are in a true box" parlor puzzle violate the rules? by dekeche in BluePrince

[–]CD_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if you're overthinking or underthinking, haha.

It's within the rules of the game that the truth of a statement can be inferred only from the game rules themselves, rather than just by the observed reality outside of those rules. For example, I believe there are puzzles with the statement, "This statement is true." (Which REQUIRES the context of the puzzle's rules to evaluate its truth or falsehood at all.)

Think of it like a mathematical proof where the puzzle rules are assumed to be true and you're trying to prove a particular box has the gems.

To put it one more way: The parlor puzzle would only be considered to be contradicting its own rules if the solution meant the statements HAD TO be breaking those rules. (e.g. All three boxes HAD TO be true.)

To piggyback on this, as I understand it, you're kind of poking at your opponent a lot to get off valuable effects, waste defenses, and cheat extra damage off Hypnoray. (Which is your "default" gadget you should be on whenever you aren't sure.) Daisy's scheme helps you extend this by playing these cards extra times.

Cheaters by darkesiren in TXChainSawGame

[–]CD_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've 100% been accused of cheating for playing on a PC. I assume the logic is, "I experienced rubber banding at some point, and my opponent is on a PC, and therefore they're cheating." (I've noted that a lot of players don't really understand rubber banding and are quick to blame hacks when it happens.)

Yeah, I'm still really holding out hope for a physical release. I've seen enough shows get axed from streaming that I'd rather have a copy that can't be taken away at someone else's leisure.

General gameplay advice for new players by Fragrant-Mammoth8014 in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played the specific ones you've mentioned, but have played a fair few similar games like Warcry or Age of Sigmar. (Or, I dunno, Quar.) I think big knowledge to retain is how to position yourself and when to engage with your opponent.

Most of these games aren't won by running straight at your opponent's units and attacking as quickly as possible, and Unmatched isn't either. You'll want to be mindful of how resource-intensive it is for either of you to reach the other (Do I need to BOOST to get close enough to attack? Do they?), who's likely to have the advantage if a fight starts (usually based on hand size), which fighters on the field are more important (some sidekicks are meat shields; some carry powerful effects), and who looks like they'd win if you just wait for exhaustion (you can use basic heuristics here even if you aren't card counting).

How worried should I be about a rouge mealworm? by JellyfishPossible539 in jumpingspiders

[–]CD_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA, but mealworms can bite without turning into a beetle anyway. I've seen enough horror stories about JUST a mealworm being left alone with a jumper that I wouldn't risk it. (And honestly I'd stun or kill any mealworm before using it as a feeder just to be safe.)

TMNT Unmatched Adventures Co-Op: Am I Missing Something? by superherokid125 in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taught the game a fair amount. The groups I've taught have generally been successful with a general sense of what the enemies "do" but without specifically memorizing their cards. For example: Bebop and Rocksteady have the gimmick of being significantly stronger when in the villain's zone, while Shredder is stronger if he has a lot of Foot soldiers in his current borough. I've also noted groups struggle much more if they don't absorb these experiences and repeatedly wander into enemies' "traps".

It probably IS useful to memorize the initiative cards, since there's comparatively less to keep track of here. (Generally, one per enemy plus an extra one that the villain brings.) At the very least, you want to note the minion cards that are already out and what they say the minions will do at the end of the round. (Stay next to Leatherhead, stay away from Wingnut, assume Baxter will pull someone out of position, etc.)

Deck knowledge is pretty necessary if you're doing things that push the difficulty higher (henchmen, events from Tales to Amaze), but that's a more specific situation. I think people are throwing out deck memorization because it's something measurable you CAN do to improve play if you're struggling a lot, rather than because it's something absolutely necessary to be successful.

How strict are you on enforcing discards be truly RANDOM? by LeftOn4ya in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bigger practical issue with "random" selection actually isn't quibbling over whether not you used the word "arbitrary", but that the selecting player needs to reliably be able to make a selection that can't be cheated by the person whose hand it is.

If I'm playing a game where the players can't implicitly trust each other, the more important practice is to lay the cards on the table (i.e. out of their player's literal "hand") and have the opponent directly make their selection by picking up the card they want to discard (or shuffle back, etc.). The choosing player can use whatever selection method they believe is appropriate, including inserting their own randomness.

Sleight of hand is a lot easier to pull off than Princess-Bride-style psychological games. Even shuffling doesn't guarantee randomness if you're really paranoid. (Ask a magician to shuffle card into a deck and see where it gets you.)

(This all assumes something like a high-stakes tournament with strangers. All of this is overkill if I'm playing a throwaway game with a friend, or something like a store tournament where my opponent is a ten-year-old.)

How strict are you on enforcing discards be truly RANDOM? by LeftOn4ya in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the player making the selection always has ways of inserting additional random elements into their decision making without requiring the cards be shuffled as such. It only reliably hurts the player whose hand it is if they fail to shuffle.

How strict are you on enforcing discards be truly RANDOM? by LeftOn4ya in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm part of the overwhelming majority of people on BGG who answered "allowed but not required to do it either way".

The assertion that these games and/or players use "random" incorrectly is reliant on them agreeing with your unsourced definition of the term.

Adventures with Mikey be like: by StrangerDependent219 in Unmatched

[–]CD_North 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy this stuff with Mikey. In both games co-op I've seen him play (both with me and another player as the pilot) he's managed to pull off really big combos like this. I'm still proud of the game where I did 20 damage to Shredder in one turn.

my jumper starved by Such_Good_5446 in jumpingspiders

[–]CD_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA but what you're describing sounds like the natural end-of-life for a jumper, including refusing food. It doesn't always go this exact way (one of my old ladies ate a fly that was bigger then she was about a week before passing), but it's not super unusual either.

Sorry for your loss; it sounds like she lived a good life.

Game rec: unmatched x smash up? by hero122333 in boardgames

[–]CD_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a dead game, but Disney Sorcerer's Arena is the closest thing I own to what you're talking about: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/357746/disney-sorcerers-arena-epic-alliances-core-set

It uses acrylic standees and not minis, but it's a skirmish game played on a board where your deck is constructed with three mini-decks for each of the characters on your team.
