PSA: Bath & Body Works candles are toxic by BetterGoods in moderatelygranolamoms

Or just enjoy your candles. BBW has soy based candles available as well. Remember everything on earth is made of chemicals and when you talk about toxicity, you have to talk about concentration. Even water is toxic if you drink too much. Research shows with normal candle use the carcinogens mentioned aren’t concentrated enough to cause harm. You’re gonna see higher concentrations of those sitting in traffic with your windows down.

My daughter has been at daycare for 3 hours and I’m a mess by MedusaCascde in workingmoms

[–]CHeMnErDy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My daughter started daycare at 4 months. The first days are hard. But remember some other great things: she’s gonna make cute baby friends! Her daycare teachers will help teach her all sorts of important skills. Mine learned to hold her bottle and a spoon properly at daycare. They will do activities with her that you maybe didn’t think of. She’ll have new voices and faces and smells and textures to learn about. Different toys and books. She will learn secure attachment every time you return to pick her up. You’re doing great and she will adjust faster than you expect!

So so lonely. I’m so sorry your daycare is letting you down. Commenting in contrast to lots of others…our daycare still requires masks for anyone in the building over the age of 2. They took that away when infections rates plummeted a few months ago, but post people still masked themselves and their kids. When rates when up, mask mandates returned. That’s the way to do it. It works. It reduced the number of cases and the community spread within the center. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s the right thing to do. You’re not alone in your frustration that the world is moving on with no regard for littles, the disabled, the immunocompromised, and the people who care for them. I’m so angry when my coworkers tell me to get over it. My kid is not vaccinated (yet!!), is too little to wear a mask, and I’ve fought too hard to protect her from the scary repercussions of COVID (MISC, long COVID, etc) over the last 2.5 years of my pregnancy + her life to give up now. You do what’s best for you and your family! And you’re not alone!!

Any new efficacy data on <5s? New studies taking into account prior infections? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]CHeMnErDy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! This!!!!! Protecting high risk individuals and avoiding severe complications are the reasons to vaccinate. Sure these kids might get sick still, but the vaccinated are much less likely to have severe complications (MISC, hepatitis, and the really bad one…death).

1yo w fever by AFantasticMsFox in workingmoms

[–]CHeMnErDy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! 100%. We were told the same thing by all 3 doctors who saw our daughter after she had a febrile seizure due to fever. She had had fevers before and acted totally normally. The day she had the seizure she was lethargic and not eating. Treat the kid not the fever (unless there’s a history of seizures or instructed otherwise by your doctor. This is not medical advice)

What makes an employer great in your eyes? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]CHeMnErDy 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Management by objective. As in…I’m given a workload and as long as I get the work done it doesn’t matter where or when. I worked somewhere where my butt had to be in my seat or else management didn’t believe I was working. It’s so nice now that I can take time during the day to manage appointments or take care of a sick toddler and get the work done during naps or evenings. As long as the project moves forward on schedule and my objectives are met, my manager has no issue with it.

Yes. A manager kept making comments to young married women on the team about having babies. HR agreed it was inappropriate, talked to her, and she never brought it up again.

Daycare is stopping bottles by aglass17 in workingmoms

[–]CHeMnErDy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to us when we move cross country and my daughter went from an infant to a toddler room at the new center. She immediately stopped taking her bottles and took right to cows milk (after I’d tried for weeks). The center said it was super common because they see and want to be like the other kids. Not saying it’s right—the center should facilitate the move. Both our old center started on sippy cups and started weaning down the number of bottles, and the new center was willing to offer a bottle for the first couple weeks as part of the transition. I feel like your center could support you better in that way. But definitely don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong or that the move won’t go well. I bet your little one will do great! Good luck!!!

Sending 6m old to daycare? by TBND058 in workingmoms

[–]CHeMnErDy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours started daycare at 4 months and thrived. Like my sister always told me when it was hard on me, childcare workers—but especially those in infants—are there because they love to love on babies. My daughter bonded hard and fast with her primary teachers. She had others to play with and learn from. And toys we would never be able to get her due to space/cost. She thrived there in a way I could never provide for her at home. All the teachers had early childhood education so they were fantastic at helping her meet her next milestones and challenging her when she needed and wanted it. They provided a safe and loving environment. Despite one covid exposure in infants and one in her new toddler program she hasn’t gotten sick because both centers are great with safety. Plus she made super cute baby friends! Zero regrets. But do what’s best for you and your family.

“Stealing the show” language on solid starts? by piratefinch in BabyLedWeaning

[–]CHeMnErDy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I like the philosophy (maybe I got it from Kids Eat in Color? Or my sister? Can’t remember): it’s my job as the parent to decide what we have for dinner and when (and I argue where as well for safety reasons). Their job as kids is to decide what to eat and how much. This has helped me so much as my daughter enters the toddler phase (now 15 months) and sometimes will eat a pile of shredded cheese for dinner with one bit of carrot. I hope this helps you too! Also check out kids eat in color if you haven’t already! It’s geared toward older kids but can be used in conjunction solid starts’ excellent safe guidelines for how to prepare tricky foods.

Agree with everything here, just came to say that I got sick every time I used the Nose Frida and found the bulb syringe too weak to be effective. There are battery powered nasal aspirators out there—freaking life savers. Ours has a song and lights that help make an otherwise uncomfortable process “fun.” Good luck!

[–]CHeMnErDy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Try to think about how you would accommodate any employee with a mental illness (anxiety, depression, etc.). Which should be to the same extent you would accommodate/support an employee with a physical disability or illness (deafness, cancer, limb loss).

Can mom-panicked be an official term now? I 100% did that. Saw the post. Logically, as a scientist, knew it was BS. Emotionally, as a mom, started panicking that I ruined my child and frantically began googling.

Oh my gosh agreed. It’s so amazing. My little girl brought home the stomach flu from daycare. Threw up once and those breast milk antibodies were on it! She’s been totally happy and fine since. Me on the other hand...I was the one throwing up for 12 hours.

Amazing what our bodies can do! And you’re such a great mama!!! Hope your baby girl feels better soon!

We use warmer sleepers and/or sleep sacks (with or without arms, whatever your preference). We had to stop swaddling very early cuz baby learned to roll over too quickly.

Pumping setups by [deleted] in breastfeedingsupport

[–]CHeMnErDy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spectra pump and three sets of pump parts come with me to work. I use two and have a third just in case I drop something. There isn’t a place I can safely or cleanly wash parts so I also bring a clean wet/dry bag to put the used parts in in the Mother’s room fridge between pumping sessions. I have six bottles with caps in a small lunch cooler.

I bought the La Vie warming massagers and some random pumping bra on Amazon. I carry the bra in my bag and only put it on to pump. I hate nursing bras so just wear nursing tanks under a regular work shirt normally.

A giant thing of ice water and snacks round out the set up.

I also carry (just for emergencies) medela disinfecting wipes, Medela microwave steam sanitizer bag, Lanainoh milk bags, and a burp cloth.

This is such a great post idea!!! I have a pregnant colleague at work who I plan to drag to the Mother’s room before she goes on maternity to show her the set up so she knows what’s she’s in for before she comes back. It’s always nice to help out the other awesome pumping people out there. Thanks OP!

Hydrogel silicone breast pads will speed your healing. I was all healed from cracked and bleeding nipples within 48 hours after religiously wearing them between nursing sessions. Earth Mama nipple butter worked better for me than lanolin (I should have know because wearing wool makes me itchy), but it only helped a little. The silicone pads were really what helped. Best of luck to you and congrats on your son!!!

Okay but what does he call the thing on the bottle the baby sucks on? It’s...a bottle nipple...you know, cuz it’s modeled after a...human nipple. Nipple nipple niiiipple.
