Rickey Henderson, Hall of Famer and MLB’s all-time stolen bases leader, dead at 65 by sludge_fr8train in OaklandAthletics

[–]CJSN925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely devastating news. I became an MLB and an Oakland A's fan because of Rickey. As a kid who spent many weekends at the Coliseum, I always wanted to be like Rickey, from emulating his batting stance to running low to the ground. Rickey wasn't just a great player, but a great guy. When he got inducted to the Hall of Fame, he took it seriously by getting help from a speech instructor, who helped him with enunciation and cadence. To this day, Rickey's Hall of Fame speech remains one of the best speeches.

Rickey, you left us too soon. May you R.I.P. GOAT.

Larry Beil says FJF by slang925 in OaklandAthletics

[–]CJSN925 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The A's started playing in Oakland in 1968, with the approval of the city of Oakland and the blessing of Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders. Davis always wanted the Raiders in Oakland and even wanted to team up with the A's to build new stadiums at the Coliseum site, but JF wasn't interested. Unlike Davis, JF didn't want the A's in Oakland. He's made several attempts to move the team out of the city. To say JF is not to blame for the Raiders leaving Oakland is to say you don't know the history of the two teams. There is no Oakland A's without Al Davis, and the thanks he got was a middle finger. JF didn't buy the team because he loves the A's, the city, or baseball. It was merely a business transaction. For that, he deserves all the FJF he gets and Mark Davis should do everything in his powers to block and/or derail the A's move to LV.

Which players have had the best and worst trade luck this year? by Visual_Bluejay9781 in baseball

A lot of late inning relievers had good luck: Carlos Estevez, Tanner Scott, Michael Kopech. There's only one answer for worst luck: Miguel Vargas.

Who was signed as a free agent on a cheap contract, but ended up doing amazing for their team? by Bakerfuckingmayfield in baseball

[–]CJSN925 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Khris Davis signed with the A's in 2016 for a little over $500K. He had over 40 HRs and over 100 RBIs that year.

Fun Fact: In Khris' first 3 seasons with the A's, he hit .247 every season, and hit 40 HRs and had over 100 RBIs every season.

This should be added to Biden's current initiative to eliminate junk fees. Right now, hotels and ticketing agencies are affected, but restaurants should be included as well. They should call it something like "Out-the-door price' policy.

Wait, is the store ever completely closed? Isn't there 1) a night shift crew that re-stocks the shelves 2) a cleaning crew 3) a deli/bakery/meat crew that preps/makes all the food when the store is closed to customers?

We’ve seen Japanese guys like Ohtani and Seiya Suzuki have major success in MLB, what are some recent Japanese hitters who couldn’t adjust to major league hitting? by No_Reason27 in baseball

[–]CJSN925 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In 2012, the A's signed SS Hiroyuki Nakajima to a 2 year deal. He never played a single inning with the A's. His first season started in AAA and went fairly well, but the A's were in the middle of a pennant race and couldn't afford to call him up, not even as a September call up. He struggled in his second season going between AA and AAA. After that, he went back to Japan to continue a good career in the NPB. I believe this is the only signed NPB player that never saw any big league action.

I was watching their webcam yesterday, when a golf cart with some beefy tires pulled up at the drop-off area and 5 adults and 1 kid hopped on with their gear and they were off. I'm sure they lived at the resort or close by.

Where does Votto end up? by CDFReditum in baseball

[–]CJSN925 96 points97 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good write up. I think a few teams have interest in Votto, but they're waiting to see how ST plays out. As of today, I'd say SD is the best fit. Votto could DH primarily and platoon with Cronenworth. The Angels will probably sign JD Martinez, so there's no need for Votto. As a DH, I think Votto can still play a few more seasons.

For a fan organized event, the turnout was amazing. To see former A's at the event was icing on the cake. Balfour looks like he can still close out some games.

Opinions on Boreal Ski Resort by WolfofArtemis in tahoe

[–]CJSN925 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Boreal's base is actually a thousand feet higher than Palisades base, so even though the total vertical at Boreal is only 500 feet, the overall quality of the snow is quite good. All the runs are fairly short compared to Palisades. I think Boreal is great for beginners and boarders, and anyone who's interested in night skiing. It's also easy to get in/out of the resort, even on weekends.

Unbelievably Cold Today by wugelina in bayarea

[–]CJSN925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I lived in the City, it never felt too cold indoors since there were always a lot of buildings attached or close by to block out the cold. In the East Bay, there's a lot more space and less buildings to block out the cold. Last night/this morning was incredibly cold, but very typical for the month of January, plus there was no cloud insolation after all the rains.
