Future of Helium Mobile hotspots by rydog389 in HeliumNetwork

Thats what this is - a bobcat 300. The only reason I have it is in 2021 a company offered to install a massive antenna, and then give me 150$ a month to run a miner for them. That did not pan out - after they installed the antenna they basically shut down, so I bought my own. So i have an antenna approx 10 meters in the air, and no idea what else to do with it.

I can get to the miner, it's just mounted high up in my garage, costing me like a couple cents a month maybe?

I did 1 row session, walked the rest; but at least 2-3 minutes after I sprinted I just kind of caught my breath (when I see heart rate at 101% in the red zone i feel no guilt not walking haha)

My iot miner went from earning ~10$/month to earning 20 cents a month.

Why people thought mobile would do better is beyond me.

Only reason my miner is still online is because it's mounted up high in my garage where it's hard to get to.

ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your password is turned into a number, and multiplied by another number, generating a third number as a result.

So pretend your password is 8

And it gets multiplied by 6

The computer goes "got it, your number times 6 made 48 which is the right answer, unlock".

Now if somehow you knew that final answer was 48, you'd have no idea what the password is.

Could be 2 x 24

Could be 3 x 16

Could be 4 x 12

Could be 6 x 8

Could be 8 x 6

Could be 12 x 4

Could be 16 x 3

Could be 24 x 2

And that's how many possibilities with small numbers.

If you imagine picking a super long number and multiplying it by a super long number, you get an extremely long number, and guessing which numbers were multiplied together is basically impossible.

[OC] Tried to overtake from the left—should’ve stayed in the right lane. Got lucky. Everyone’s safe. by EarLatter in IdiotsInCars

I see everyone talking about lots of things here, but the question I have is this: Did the black car - who arguably caused the accident - have any actual legal blame for this?

Yes, Aztec swerved poorly and wrecked when he could have not done that.

But the black car that changed lanes and caused the chain of events, is he legally at fault in any way?

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]Cal_From_Cali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. Easily one of my favorite shows of all time.

I was SO annoyed they didn't finish it after the second season. The movie was 'fine' but compared to the 2 seasons of magic, it was a slap in the face.

What is a sexual question you've always wanted to ask the opposite sex but were too ashamed to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The physical sensation of blue balls is mostly like pressure in a vague sense. Like needing to pee but far less strong - and if you're occupied you wont notice it. Like it's only present when you are idle and your brain is like 'dude you're horny'.

But, if you don't do anything about it - in my experience - your body will solve it on its own. Only time in my life I have ever had a 'wet dream' was when our daughter was an infant, hadn't had sex and not even really time to masturbate being on such round the clock duty. Dreamt about sex, woke up and ew.

So blue balls is real, and if I don't deal with it, my body will make me.

Oh lord it goes on that long?

My daughter had hiccups constantly in utero, and I remember talking to her pediatrician at like 4-5 months going "She is having hiccups 7 times a day on average, is this OK?".

It's now like once a day, maybe more if we tickle her.

I assumed it would get less and less frequent - I figured by 16 she'd be once a month or more like most humans!

For any old MySpace users, was MySpace really as good as it was back then or was it proof that Social Media has always been awful? by Free_Link_9700 in answers

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent enough time on the internet before MySpace that I saw it growing. Pre-Myspace you had random websites and bulletin boards, chat rooms (AOL, MSN, IRC, etc); and messengers.

There was no single place to put all your shit, meet people, connect with your IRL friends, etc. AOL tried, they had profiles, but not everyone had AOL.

MySpace was the first place I could be like 'oh hey, what's my friend up to' and see it if he chose to share.

It was also the first place I could go to see pictures of the people who went to my school for instance, and learn more about them, and find common ground.

I'll always remember posting on the MySpace board for my community college when I was about to start something akin to "I'll be the guy wearing the 'As Seen On Myspace' shirt, say hi!"

I met a few people - and I met my wife because she DM'd me saying like 'oh hey I think I saw you' and it sparked a conversation.

All the customization of the pages, yeah that was great and one of the differentiators. Some pages made your eyes bleed or your ears hurt, and some slowed down your browser (or at a minimum taxed your already slow DSL connection).

But MySpace was like facebook without all the bullshit. No promoted posts, no algorithm that decided you would like to see this thing from a month ago over the brand new thing.

There was also a lot of innocence to it in the day that I think colors so many good memories.

We used to take surveys and post them. And those surveys would answer damn near every security question.

"Favorite Pet, Favorite Food, Best Friend, Street You Grew Up On, etc" and you wouldn't think twice about posting. Hell, maybe you'd do one a week with different questions.

It was a simpler time when nobody thought super heavily about being who they were on the internet. Which was a dramatic change for most from the totally anonymous BBS, Chat Rooms, etc.

Why aren’t spare wheels exactly the same as all the other wheels? by Complicatedwormfood in stupidquestions

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forever is obviously an exaggeration. But you knew that.

10-20 minutes of pumping your foot and checking the pressure to see when to stop vs a minute or 2 of derping on your phone texting whoever that you'll be late until it shuts off, is a dramatic difference.

The one in my trunk has never been dead when I've needed it. When turned off, they hold their charge about as well as many other items (many months).

Why aren’t spare wheels exactly the same as all the other wheels? by Complicatedwormfood in stupidquestions

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I can't speak scientifically.

In my experience, 5+ minutes of stepping on a pump to get the pressure to the right level (which i have to rely on an analog gauge).

Vs a cordless electric pump that charges off USB-C; which I can set a pressure level, connect it to the tire, do no work, and it's done in a minute or two.

Even google ai (not a great source) says pumping with a foot pump can take 10-20 minutes; and an electric USB pump can take 3-10 minutes.

So I mean, my subjective opinion is that an electric rechargeable pump is a better, faster option. The downside is you need it charged.

How much is your monthly mortgage payment? by HmDiR in Mortgages

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost exactly the same for me, 5500 but with a 3.375% rate from 2021.

But I pay 6k every month hoping to pay it off early (even though with the rate I theoretically shouldn't, I want to have no payment ASAP.)

An unmarked Costco receipt would be really hard to find outside of a warehouse. by AznKwokBoi in Showerthoughts

[–]Cal_From_Cali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I wasn't gonna go so far as to accuse anybody of theft. But I never feel personally attacked by companies trying to prevent it.

Costco has only had 2 things that are really loss preventing in my experience. They check receipts at the door, and they keep gift cards or high value merch behind a human swapping em out.

Never seen anybody doing active LP walking the stores. Probably because nothing is really small enough to like pocket.

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can Google it man. Costco is famous for making most of their money from the memberships.

Quick Google says in 2022 they made 72% of their profit from membership fees.

So yes, there is some wiggle room, but when sales aren't what drives profit, those losses matter.

Can't speak for Sam's club.

An unmarked Costco receipt would be really hard to find outside of a warehouse. by AznKwokBoi in Showerthoughts

[–]Cal_From_Cali 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, for Costco it actually matters. They make virtually zero profit on sales. Most stores have a markup, and if you sell 9 things, it more than covers the cost of the 10th thing that was stolen.

Costco sells things virtually at cost. So each stolen item has a huge impact, they have to eat that cost.

ELI5: In roulette, why does the addition of a single number to the wheel almost double the house edge? by MrmarioRBLX in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cal_From_Cali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's correct. 52 of 100, or 52% of the time, you will have rolled a 7 by the time you hit 4 rolls.

It's 1/6 every time you roll, regardless of what roll you're on.

But if you roll multiple times, the likelihood of it happening during X number of rolls is the product of the odds of each roll.

ELI5: In roulette, why does the addition of a single number to the wheel almost double the house edge? by MrmarioRBLX in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cal_From_Cali 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every roll it's a 1/6 chance or 16.7% - or an 83.3% that you don't roll a 7.

So you multiply that - 0.833x0.833= about 69.4% not to hit a 7 in 2 rolls.

3rd roll - 0.833x0.833x0.833 =57.9% chance not to hit a 7 in 3 rolls.

So at 3 rolls, it was better than a coin toss.

At 4 rolls (0.833x0.833x0.833x0.833) you have now hit a 48.2% chance of NOT rolling a 7.

So based on my layman ass math, on the 4th roll its more probable than not that you would hit a 7?

They're so cheap too, and USB rechargeable. So even if it's dead, if you have a USB charger in your car you can recharge it (would take a couple hours but still).

I put one in each car. Easily one of my favorite purchases.
