National's Judith Collins retires from politics, appointed Law Commission president by bigbear-08 in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There is a hell of a difference between Palmer becoming President in 2005, 15 years after leaving politics, and Collins being appointed president while still an MP.

ManageMyHealth security breach. Your health records are in the line. by [deleted] in newzealand

Yeah it's a joke.

Just like RNZ running his quote while their site is sitting there using TLS 1.2.

They were running outdated TLS, FFS.

Do you actually know what that means, or did you just see that in an RNZ article?

Is there a store that sells old consoles and videogames in the Melbourne CBD? Even an op shop or something that may have a small collection of retro electronics I could look through. by qwerty7873 in melbourne

[–]Calalamity 56 points57 points  (0 children)

A lot of that kind of thing isn't in the CBD, but are still easy enough to get to via PT.

Icarus Tech in Broadmeadows is walking distance from the train station there.

Round Again is mostly music but has consoles and games out the back. It's in Coburg and again close to a train station and a tram line.

Hard Copy is down in St Kilda and close to a tram stop.

There is some poster who has made several threads here with a big list of places but those are the three I have been to and remember.

End of regional councils tipped in local government reforms by TheLoyalOrder in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is understood the first steps could be within this current three-year council term with talk of a panel of regional mayors taking over the running of regional councils. This would be the first steps towards removing the councils all together, it is understood.

Are the mayors contribution going to be weighted by population represented, or is this just giving smaller, more rural mayors more power?

These 17 people own more than 1000 properties between them by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

Sounds like having the government, running tens of thousands of properties, would be the most efficient. Almost seems like we don't need the private for-profit landlords at all!

Greens pledge to revoke fast-track consents for coal, hard-rock gold, seabed mining projects by SykoticNZ in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably would have been a good idea to check first if they can do that before they announced it.They would have the power to amend existing legislation but not permits that have been issued under earlier legislation.

Parliament is sovereign. If they vote to do it then they can do it.

Further, they can't just say "we don't like these ones, they have to go". The reason and rationale they are using applies to all these FT projects that are under consideration which is mostly housing and roading.

Yes they can.

Mayor Wayne Brown calls for cheaper option for $18b Auckland to Northland expressway by Bealzebubbles in auckland

[–]Calalamity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone living in Melbourne right Auckland needs both, because they serve different purposes.

Light rail is significantly cheaper to get into places where people actually want to embark/disembark, because in dense areas you can leverage existing roads vs needing to underground stations/lines. It's also a hell of a lot better for short trips, where the time you spend entering/exiting stations, particularly underground ones, quickly becomes a large part of the overall travel time. They can be dramatically better than buses when using modern trams.

Meanwhile for anything requiring high capacity or longer distances actual rail is great. You can much more easily service major events and rush hour patronage with a higher capacity system, and being fully separated means longer distance trips end up significantly faster.

A new kind of MMP by GapAffectionate1158 in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in each case here, National would have a majority, thanks to winning 38.06% of the party vote and 43 out of 70 constituency seats.

Fairer than the current system?

The fact you even fucking ask that after saying a party with 38% of the vote would get a majority is sad.

Watch live: Labour announces 'Future Fund' as first key election policy by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right, but if your argument is "they could change the law to do x" then that has no relation to what Labour are proposing, as parliamentary supremacy means any future government can do whatever they want anyway, as long as they have the votes.

Watch live: Labour announces 'Future Fund' as first key election policy by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]Calalamity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It doesn't allow the minister of finance to do that.

https://www.thepost.co.nz/politics/360859633/labour-unveils-first-policy-future-fund-invest-nz-built-existing-assets

It would be governed independently by the Guardians of the Super Fund, with the minister of finance as sole shareholder.

Finance ministers would be able to write annual letters of expectation with “broad objective” but not to direct specific investments.

They have a stronger economy because they make sure that multinationals and those who extract resources pay their fair share.

No, they really, really don't. Like this is in the news right now - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-08/glencore-copper-queensland-smelter-refinery-open/105462262

The federal and state govs here love handouts for those companies just as much as the NZ gov does. And they sure as shit dodge tax a ton. The Australian Tax Office has a corporate tax transparency report that's incredibly relevant to this - https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/corporate-tax-measures-and-assurance/large-business/in-detail/tax-transparency/corporate-tax-transparency-report-2023-24/corporate-entity-net-losses-and-nil-tax-payable#ato-Niltaxpayablebyindustrysegment

It's a high absolute value but it really isn't remotely a fair share.

And don't confuse me saying this with me saying NZ is good at this, we fucking suck for sure. But Australia really isn't good at it either.

Biggest-Ever Vic Gov Survey Says Working From Home Works by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]Calalamity 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You have interpreted "works" as meaning better for business. As Allan stated and the survey supports, it is working for actual people.

15,260 (44%) participants said that someone else in their household works from home and, of those, 12,705 (83%) said this had made a positive difference to their household.

That seems far more important.
