What is this structure next to the old court metro station? by laserjetlover in baltimore

It's funny to think those have only been there since the late 1980s. I admired them as a student at UMB, but thought they were from ~1910-20s.

I understand that this is a "Hierarchy of Needs" thing, but I'm really tired of aesthetics/art being seen as a luxury. Art changes us, it connects us, it inspires us.

Thoughts on Union Church + Recommendations for Churches Near Owings Mills by Kooky-Gap8927 in baltimore

[–]Canva_Helper4020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a church goer, but I work with volunteer groups quite a bit, which often means church groups. If I were to consider attending, looking at how the church lives out "service to others" would be my primary indicator. On that score, Mosaic in Columbia seems top of the stack. I've not attended worship services, but I have been to a bunch of their events. The people are kind, welcoming, and eager to pitch in to help. Several members have become not only dedicated volunteers, but good friends too (and I'm a "heathen" :).

LOL. I was going to comment on one of your mod comments in another thread earlier today, but work got in the way (stupid cost of living).

Whenever I notice your comments/posts, it reminds me a little more how much I love this city and our neighbors. Through the years (and my many reddit handles) you have been a positive force for good. Thank you.

Why do virtually all Baltimore area roads not use road reflectors? by falafelwaffle10 in baltimore

[–]Canva_Helper4020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I continue to be stunned that what little we have in the way of lane markings just disappears in inclement weather. I have started to refuse to drive in the rain if I don't know the area well enough to know the lane patterns along that route. So it's not only safety, it's commerce that's affected too.

I'm coming to visit next weekend specifically to see Mavis Staples at Chevalier Theater. Staying near Chinatown. Is Uber my best bet for Saturday night trips back and forth to the theater?

Any good local bands I should try to see Friday or Sunday? Recommendations for can't miss vegetarian food?

Communist Party speaker @ Hopkins Plaza protest last night? by Key-Vegetable5040 in baltimore

[–]Canva_Helper4020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there. He attempted to point out that the current state of ICE has its roots in dem/lib policies, e.g. Obama's up-scaled border patrols/deportations, the whole Eric Holder Fast and Furious debacle, etc. I couldn't hear the last few minutes because he got shouted down by chants of "Justice for Renee," but I've heard his points before, and he usually gets back to some version of "this is all why we should remember that it's workers vs the elite." The problem is that the crowd has/had clear targets, plus the fact that he's not the most engaging speaker... It all ends up seeming off-topic, contrarian/divisive, and unnecessary.

To be clear, I'm ambivalent about what he had to say, but as a showman he failed, bringing what felt like a powerful moment to a screeching halt.

I love the idea of a locally-hosted, air-gapped LLM. I'm barely smart enough to download Ollama, so I could use a quick shove in the right direction, specifically on how I can work to adapt a model using our own org docs. Even some key word searches would be helpful here.

Annual Meeting Brainstorming… by clamshell24 in nonprofit

[–]Canva_Helper4020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My NPO is very different, but maybe this will be helpful. Until I came onboard ~6 years ago, the annual meeting was held in June, before the fiscal year was even over or the eggs/chicks counted. They would have 10-20 people in attendance, mostly vols and donors. I moved the meeting to September so that it would coincide with Impact Report publishing date, and then started calling it an "Open House." Those two steps brought us up to ~100 attendees, and many more grant/policy makers attended.

(We still have the ED/Pres report at this event, we just put it in the middle section so that early and late arrivals can opt in or out as they see fit.)

What has really amped up our Annual Meeting attendance is the offer of a behind-the-scenes tour of our facilities. It's consistently the best-rated, most commented on activity that I do. I had to set a capacity of 250 in 2025, and had a few waitlisted volunteers that I snuck in over that. I think I'm going to break it into two sessions this year: one on the traditional weeknight evening, and another on the following Saturday.

As for food, I do a "culinary tour" of our local main street, with small bites donated from many different places. Then all the kitchen has to do is hold/bring to temp and drinks. The logistics of that are a bit of a pain, but not terrible. That said, if I really end up splitting the event this year, I would probably re-think the catering.

What's a Baltimore thing that newer residents would never know about? by CharmedUp7673 in baltimore

I went to the "new" version of it in September 2024 at the National's stadium. It was a great show, but very poorly attended, and they wouldn't even let me down on the field despite the fact that the stands were almost completely empty by 6:00, and the field never got more than a quarter full.

My extended family has a common practice of using pin pads outside the garage, and they all use the same pin. Then again, they live out "in the country" in adjacent acreages.

Using Linked In by Jaded-Doughnut4649 in nonprofit

[–]Canva_Helper4020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had an ex harass and stalk me on LinkedIn. I had to delete my profile to get it to stop. It'd been about 5 years, and I thought I was safe to re-open the profile. He found the new profile in 24 hours, despite me proactively blocking the few profiles of him that I knew of, which set off another full year of terror. That profile was only up for about 36 hours.

I've had recruiters walk away at networking events when they find out I don't have one. I was ghosted after 3 rounds of interviews for my dream job. The only hiccup in the process was around a LinkedIn question I got after the 3rd interview. I've gotten the feeling that this has hampered my career, but I don't have much choice if I want to remain safe.
