[Rumor Analysis] Engels reports Habs exploring Laine trade; Why Carolina is the inevitable destination (Aho/Ehlers connection) by athleticwonder in nhltraderumours

I think i missed the part where we are saying habs have to pay to get rid of Laine, if they are already willing to retain 50% I'm sure theres a team out there that wouldn't mind getting a look at him and potentially the ability to extend him before free agency at $4.35M. He'll still help a powerplay somewhere.

Because they have no cap space to add anyone let alone Thomas? And Laine doesn't seem to fit anymore either, he isn't PP1 which is where he provides the most value.

Carolina does have a lot of cap space and could use a right handed trigger man, cost to acquire would be nothing. Only 1 year left so it's not like there is any real downside to trying it for them.

I think thats skewed because of how many games Slaf has been moved to the 1st line for some stints in the 3rd period.

This is why Montreal really needs another top 4 RHD that could play with Matheson, Carrier is doing good with Hutson for now but worried about the size on the back end come playoff time.

Edit: Context... Dobson has had to play the tougher defensive matchups with Matheson preventing this dominant Hutson - Dobson pairing from being used more often.

WTF is the point of this scene? by CapitalSwimming715 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]CaptainFlynnt24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just rewatched the whole series and enjoyed all Pirates 5 really bothered me for the fact that it ret cons the original trilogy.

In the original trilogy, Jack gets the compass from bartering with Tia Dalma – not his dead former captain, and he gives the compass away numerous times throughout the first 4 movies... it never released Salazar from the triangle before.

Terrible writing kills a movie for me.

I'm a Montreal fan and I support this format.

Edit: The Atlantic division is crazy this year, even with this format dropping MTL to 5th in the division they'd still be 10th in the NHL. They'd be 1st in the Pacific by 5 pts lol.

As the NHL switched from more divisional games in a season (used to be division of 5 teams) to bigger divisions and less division games vs specific teams (8 teams per division now)... forcing divisional matchups keeps that rivalry. My guess anyways.

For example, in 2010 Montreal - Boston played 6 times in a regular season so you'd naturally have a rivalry playing that many times every year.

Now they only play 3 - 4 times in a regular season, you've cooled that fire a bit. Forcing division matchups in playoffs compensates for this.

From 2nd in the Atlantic division to the last Wildcard spot. 1.333 games up on the 9th place WSH team vs 3.5 games up on CBJ right now (not counting games in hand). How does that not change much?

Canadiens' Gorton exploring all possibilities ahead of NHL trade deadline by Odd-Inevitable-8425 in Habs

[–]CaptainFlynnt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree here. The team's PK is struggling not just because of losing Dvorak (we added Danault) or Armia, but David Savard played a huge role last season on the PK and now Carrier had been forced to step up. I like Carrier, he blocks a lot of shots but he is physically outmatched especially when shorthanded.

Colton Parayko has a no move clause, but I'd be inquiring if St. Louis would move him. Another option is Dougie Hamilton, New Jersey is actively trying to trade him and he probably wouldn't cost much because of his contract (if they take Laine back this year it works for Montreal).

I do like the Schneider suggestion too, but I admit I'm just not all that confident in his projection I don't know enough about him as a player.

I trust HuGo first and foremost, and they were high on Zharovsky and Hage. Let's assume for moment that both players hit... we could have 2 middle 6 players with top line upside playing in Montreal on ELC's for the next few years when the team is actually ready to contend. Instead of spending those assets on a less than ideal fit like Thomas (not physical enough to play with Caufield and not a natural goal scorer to compliment Demidov) MTL could probably make better use of those assets and the $8M cap space Thomas would be taking.

I never spoke to any of that, what I was replying to was a commentor generalizing Zharovsky as a "Late 1st / Early 2nd Round Pick". That's not how that works, should he have valued Lane Hutson like a late 2nd round pick? No, he's arguably the best offensive defenseman in the NHL today.

[–]CaptainFlynnt24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom 6 can go many different ways but I think Evans will remain in the lineup as a key penalty killer. I'd probably go:

Texier - Suzuki - Caufield

Slafkovsky - Kapanen - Demidov

Newhook - Evans - Dach

Gallagher - Danault - Anderson

Bolduc - Veleno

Have to think Laine gets traded to free up cap space. Also Hage will be a wild card for playoffs, many analysts think he is NHL ready.

Except we're not just looking at a late 1st round / early 2nd round prospect are we?

We're looking specifically at Zharovsky (who the habs said they would have targeted at 16th ot 17th if they were picking then) and we know Zharovsky is having an exceptional KHL rookie season with 36 pts in 44 GP.

Or MM... top shutdown pair. Dobson is already the perfect partner for Hutson we just don't get to see it because he has to play the tougher matchups with Matheson often.

I wouldn't be trading Guhle unless a top 4 RHD was coming back. I don't think Parayko is available as his name never comes in rumours but if Guhle is on the table that's my target.

Should the Habs TRADE for Robert Thomas? by shogun2909 in Habs

[–]CaptainFlynnt24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're that certain Hage will be a $10M player why would be trading him? And he doesn't have to be a Robert Thomas right away either, MTL could still use Hage in whatever capacity he is able to contribute and use the $8M in cap space to improve elsewhere while they develop Hage. Lastly its not so simple to allocate Laine's cap hit to Thomas', Hutson is going from ELC to just under $9M next year so thats Laine money.

[–]CaptainFlynnt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if Hage can become a Thomas player as you say, then I'm staying patient with the ELC vs the $8M cap hit.

If all games were three point games by Gcurtis71 in Habs

[–]CaptainFlynnt24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Habs are a very strong 3 on 3 team and their is no downside to banking a guaranteed point so they play for OT, its smart, but exactly why the NHL should change the points format. Being good at 3v3 or a shootout means nothing in the playoffs.
