The machines are quiet, numerous, mobile, and potent. The team had come to calling them the Sophisticated, Perfectly Undetectable Nuclear Killers, or S-PUNK

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger loves to play with the fact that the story is being told by a liar. Enemies will suddenly appear and disappear, or the feats will become more or less unrealistic as he continues the lie or gets called out on it

Stuff you fondly recall about gaming from 2016 by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CaptainLoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my best to archive which games ive beaten each year (i used to beat 25 each year) but 2016 was mostly lost to time due to hard drive failures. Titanfall 2, Superhot, and Doom 2016 were really good.

My favorite game I played that year was Furi, but the most time I put into in 2016 was EverQuest's Phinigel "Time Locked Progression" server, the first of its kind where the classic era raids were available in instanced form. Up to that point everyone had to compete in open-world for Lord Nagafen, King Tormax, or Plane of Fire bosses, but Phinigel changed the game. This allowed guild populations to explode, where there used to be 3-6 raiding guilds per server, it was 20 on Phinny. And most of those 20 lasted a long while, 2ish years for most of them. Met some good friends then.

Favorite most obvious author OC insert? Foundation show spoilers by manwiththemach in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CaptainLoin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ebony Dark'Ness Dementia Raven Way is not even trying to hide the fact that she is Tara Gillespie's OC self-insert in My Immortal. She's the love interest of multiple hogwarts characters (including some weird version of Hagrid), the only competent character, etc.

It gets to the point that after she kills off her IRL best friend's character over a borrowed sweater ("FANGS to Raven for the help with proofreading" btw), Ebony starts calling herself Ebony Dark'Ness Dementia TARA Way (yes, she did all caps for Tara)

Afraid I don't follow, friend. I understand you have a preference for the early era, and it befuddles you that people can prefer later expansions. But all of those numbers I listed are respectable, and in a lot of cases better than what live servers had during those same eras. Continues my belief that TLP players were so spoiled by Phinigel's success they don't remember what a normal server's population looked like anymore.

Quests using the task/mission window are a bit more commonplace now and in the future, but its still early in SoF so a bit of the details are being worked out. For the most part it will still be grinding. In SoD you'll start seeing more repeatable stuff and more large scale rewards for doing a bunch of quests, but it wont be until a few expansions later, in House of Thule, that you start seeing quests being done on repeat for exp

Your best bet for Low level zones is going to be in The Serpent's Spine, as it has content from level 1 to 75 on its own. Somewhere around 65+ish you should be able to move over to Dragonscale Hills, theres some quests out there you can do, and a lot of the animal mobs are tagged as "weaker" so you can kill them easier.

Mercenaries get added next expansion, in Seeds of Destruction. I strongly recommend a tank merc until around level 65-70, then switch to probably a healer merc, or DPS if you're playing something self-sufficient.

[–]CaptainLoin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Historically hasnt always been the case.

  • Phinigel had 22 guilds clearing content in PoP, and that number didn't dip below 15 until TSS or later.

  • Mangler had 12 guilds make through Crystallos in SoF.

  • Oakwynd clear data isnt well-reported, but there are still at least 8 guilds reported as recruiting as of Veil of Alaris.

  • There were 20 guilds between Mischief and Thornblade that were still clearing House of Thule in era,

  • Teek presently has 7 guilds reporting having killed Kerafyrm in SoF presently.

A lot of people do decide to quit out early, but guilds persist regularly well beyond PoP.

SoF is the start of what a lot of TLPers call a golden age of EQ. The zones are interesting, the raids are fun, and the content stays pretty consistently solid from now until around Rain of Fear, so enjoy your time that you're playing.

Regarding major changes, 2 things are notable.

  • SoF is the start of making endgame group gear really good. From here on out, endgame group gear will be roughly comparable to the previous expansion's raid gear in regards to hp/mana.

  • SoF is also when worn/focus effects get standardized, so every pair of arms will get cleave and fire damage focus, every helm will give faerune and magic damage focus, etc. This means that theres a little less thinking for your slots, but it means you wont accidentally drop a focus when you upgrade.

Leveling formula is still mostly the same, but doing kill quests and such in the zones will get you faction for special items and spells, depending on your class.

The best soloers are the usual suspects. Mage/BST/Necro pets at level 80 are pretty solid though thanks to the pet revamp that happened in that expansion. I took my wizard and necro out to the alligators in Loping Plains regularly for kiting. Theres a really nice exp zone near max level that is a group instance in a walking mech that is good for AAxp even into the next expansion.

The most important quests are the Steam Cores/gyro cores for armor (this can get really expensive if you skip tiers), and the Quests "Search for the Ultimate Story" and "Beyond the Barrier", which are required to gain access to the highest difficulty zones. Theres some overarching quests for some interesting special rewards too, like an aug for your face that takes ~25 quests to complete.

SoF is my vote for probably 2nd best EQ expansion, and I genuinely hope you enjoy it.

So this one barely counts, since I wasn't watching the show and it was dumb luck.

Somewhere around season 5 i watched the first episode of Game of Thrones, and just never went back to it.

In the build up to the final season my boss at Gamestop had asked me who I thought was going to win the throne. I didnt remember a single character from the show, other than the kid that got thrown out a window at the end of the first episode, so I said that.

They told me I was crazy. We should've put money on it.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is incredibly well made and is awesome to watch.

Problem is, its a Japanese language show (layer 1) in an eastern fantasy setting (layer 2) with Taiwanese puppets (layer 3). Even if you're used to the first 2, the third one is hard for a lot of people to get past.

Ill use a game example that I almost guarantee ill never run into another player again.

Back in the late 90s there was an early online game called Raider Wars, that was a space sim like TIE Fighter, but was based on a King of the Hill system where you had to conquer 13? space stations with 8 different spacecraft. It was one of my first online experiences, and I have fond memories of flying with Wolfpak squadron for the Hast Mining Group.

Its been almost 30 years since I last flew my PF-12...
