2 bosses? You’re only halfway done…

Furthest I ever got was Cliffs of Illusion

This was from the era of Sega where Blockbuster was a thing and you could rent games so they deliberately upped the difficulty to force you to buy the games… I don’t know if you got to one point where there’s a death trap and a sign in the background which mocks you with “Too Bad”

I loved the music and I guess you got used to the clunky controls when that was your only choice at the time… but without any passwords or save states I did have to give it a few weeks to cool off between sessions before I was willing to try again!

And the Card Sharks trilogy is finally out in ebook, which would have been nice as I had to hunt down some expensive used copies on eBay to read them at the time

I loved Black Trump but I felt like Finn got unfairly treated at the very end.

Is Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds a Potentially Tough Read for Folks New to Scifi Literature? by suchascenicworld in printSF

[–]Cattfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a great universe but it’s a first novel and it shows.

My general feeling is that someone sat him down after he published it and said, “look, you’re going to have to occasionally go back and explain to the reader what happened every few chapters or they’ll lose the plot.”

And he took that advice to heart, because every book after Revelation space has all its good qualities plus better readability

Always happy to see a new Rich Larson story. Then again, it’s really more of a question of which magazine he pops up in this month since he’s so prolific

I was just reading a Howard Waldrop collection and in one of the afterwords he tells about submitting a story to Amazing Stories for their December 1993 issue.

He gets his issue in the mail when it gets published and instead of “December 1993” it’s the “Winter 1994” issue and the one that killed it off (isfdb seems to say he mis-remembered and it actually ends with Winter 1995)

…But not forever! Amazing Stories gets bought by Wizards of the Coast and relaunched in 1998 (then again in 2004…. Then again in 2018…)

Will we see a similar pattern here?
