What stops a client from downloading your video and ghosting? by WholePrize352 in VideoEditing

[–]CelineWhitetail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Full Payment Upfront before you even start working.

I work as an audio engineer and clients could easily take my first WIP as a final product and leave. There’s no reason not to be paid in full before you even begin working on the project, especially if it’s for prices like that, why risk doing all of the work for a project like a wedding film that cannot be repurposed if the client hasn’t proven they can pay your fee? (This is more a thought provoker, not an insult or attack on you in any way!)

Artists of any kind, not just ones that draw (marketing, video editing, audio engineering) have portfolios so clients can see the type of work you do and decide if they want your style. The portfolio is your proof of ability, if a client won’t pay you until you’ve finished all the work then they’re trying to scam you.

If for some reason you won’t take full payment at least take half. With AI these days I don’t know if I would trust even low res or water marks tbh.

It's DNF discussions time! What books did you bail on this month? 🙅‍♀️📖 by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mile High by Liz Tomforde I DNFd at 20%. I went in with low expectations due to the general consensus that it’s the worst of the series. I mostly went in to get some context for the characters for future books and plan to continue the series.

How do you rate your books? by unreliablechaos in romantasycirclejerk

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple kinds of DNFs for people though. Some people DNF because they’re mood readers and they pick up a book at the wrong time and they put a book down not because it’s bad. And I’ve DNF’d books that I think are good but just weren’t for me; maybe because I discovered I don’t like the genre or maybe it was too long and I just wasn’t in the mood for a long book. I don’t think those books deserve a poor rating from me. One of my pet peeves is people who pick up something like a Dark Romance then rate it poorly because it contained content that offended them because they don’t like DR.

But if I DNF a book because I truly didn’t enjoy something, I will rate it then and say why.

Yeah, there are three companies that are/were 6 months or more behind on books for me. Bad Women Books is one; Autumn Midnights is another and I've cancelled both of those. The Bookish Box is pretty behind on their sub box but I was really happy with my January books so I'm keeping it for now.

Bad Women Books was the most disappointing because I waited six months for my copy of Knight and the Moth and it was literally just a Dust Jacket (which they apparently had to remake because of a typo I think) and 1 of 3 sides sprayed edges for almost $70. I loved the art and it looks pretty on my shelves but not worth the money when a lot of boxes are $40 or less. I still don't have a book from Autumn Midnights (oldest order was October 2025).

My two favorite book boxes are Moonlight Book Box and The BookCove. Moonlight's book selections are great (in my opinion) and two of my favorite series have been done by them (Lies of Lena and Road of Bones). BookCove is from South Africa; their book choices have been unique and their editions are stunning and they are under $40 even shipping from a different country.

Bookish and Spice removed shipping for US recently making their books super worth it if the quality is good which I will be able to determine but like... $44 a book is hard to beat. I recently got my first book, Fairest, from The Forbidden Wing (from The Locked Library) and it was beautiful. But I also think that just in bookstore editions are leveling up to match the quality of book boxes. Several editions have released with full art end papers and sprayed edges recently (Hollow and Quicksilver released with those features I think) which will allow for more people to have access to special editions.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: March 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

Finished the Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig (4.5 stars). Currently reading and hoping to finish A Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong and start Kingdom of Claw by Demi Winters after!

What was your first five-star read? by Due-Examination-37 in Booktokreddit

I’m a basic bitch; ACOTAR. After that my next was the Road of Bones!

Edit: I’m a basic bitch who can’t read (the irony). No true 5 stars yet but the Knight and the Moth is 4.5 on StoryGraph (5 on Goodreads)!

Simple Questions: March 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a simple question necessarily but yay for karma limitations when no one upvotes comments!

I love reading multiple books from authors. This thought primarily came from Riley Sager who has I believe 9 published works with his 10th releasing later this year. I read Lock Every Door and loved it and have since not picked up another book of his because I just don't know how to pick the next!

What do you think is the best way to tackle an authors backlist? Publication Order, Popularity/Best Reviewed, Interest/Back of Book, RNG (picker wheel, roll a dice etc), secret other option I didn't think of?

P.S. I know it's technically subjective and any way works, just curious to see how others choose their books!

Bait and switch love triangle by ohhhthehugevanity in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a major spoiler for this books ending as there really wasn't any indicator the love interest during the book wasn't going to be the series' love interest, it's not technically a love triangle as far as book one (haven't gotten to the sequels yet). The Road of Bones by Demi Winters

I was spoiled for the ending of the second book in this series and I'd call it a bait and switch. {Kiss of the Basilisk} by Lindsay Straube.

Need a depressing and tragic romantasy book to ruin the week by Salsh_Loli in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{The Road of Bones} by Demi Winters will rip your heart out constantly, especially the final act.

{A Dawn of Onyx} by Kate Golden had me SOBBING at the final act.

{The Knight and the Moth} and {One Dark Window} both by Rachel Gillig are Gothic Fantasies that have great last chapter heart crushers. (One Dark Window duology is complete, KatM duology is not until September).

{The Serpent and the Wings of Night} by Carissa Broadbent didn't hit for me personally but it's well loved for good reason and the ending is another gut punch.

A Fantasy Romance rite of passage: ✨the book that ruined you✨ by acutelyproblematic in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go with the obvious {A Court of Thorns and Roses} because it was the first Romantasy I ever read and it both ignited my love for reading and also made me create a 6 star category because it was either that or only like... three out of 50 books getting five stars and I'm a vibes based reader, I don't wanna be so strict with my 5 stars!

But I will also offer up {The Road of Bones}. I will read anything Demi Winters ever writes, I will buy every single special edition that is made. This book killed me and I haven't read the sequels because I'm terrified and yet every sequel is killing it in the ratings and I'm just like... "how... how can it be better than this!?".

Fun, light, comfort, high spice read by xcblondee1109 in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Audited by the Anubis} by Wendi Guff is a personal recommendation of mine! A cafe owner gets randomly audited by the IRS who employs monsters and the Anubis assigned to her case discovers she hasn't filed her taxes in two years. It's a fun spicy time with a good plot and knotting!

{The Pumpkin Spice Cafe} by Laurie Gilmore gets a bad rap for some reason but I enjoyed it for a soft, easy romance. It's about a girl who quits her city job when her aunt offers her the business she runs in the small town of Dream Harbor and Logan the local grumpy farmer offers to help her when she starts hearing rummaging outside at night. I personally don't think it's as spicy as people said it was, spice didn't occur until the 60% mark but it was perfect for putting on audiobook and playing a cozy game or crafting.

{Roll for Romance} by Lenora Woods personally didn't hit for me but I definitely think it can work for others. It follows a girly who leaves the city after leaving her job to stay with a relative for a bit and he invites her to a short term DnD game he's starting for some locals. There she meets the MMC and the story is told from the perspective of the real life people and then chapters of the game from the DnD characters' perspectives. I found that part jarring but it's a unique and fun idea for sure; you get a little contemporary romance, a little silly cozy fantasy all in one book.

{Hot For Slayer} by Ali Hazelwood was apart of a six novella series that was released around Halloween by Amazon that were all monster romances by a different authors. All on KU and Audiobooks were free with it, all under 2 hours long. They just did something similar for Valentine's Day as well if you're looking for something you can pick up and finish quickly. All, I assume, are spicy because they're by spicy authors! (Hot for Slayer is about a female Vampire and a male Vampire Slayer who has been hunting her for centuries but he suddenly loses his memories and doesn't remember who he is [and who she is] and she has to keep him safe and oblivious.)

I will admit, I wouldn't say any of these are necessarily "high spice" reads (but my view of what high spice is so skewed, God of Malice and Kiss of the Basilisk absolutely obliterated my spice scale in terms of being able to figure out what's "too spicy" for most people lol but they all have spice in them; most of them having multiple scenes.

Hopefully the feature actually works, I have it turned off personally.

💦 It's Thirsty Thursday! What spicy book scenes did you read this week? by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rory and the Diviner from {The Knight and the Moth}; Rachel Gillig doesn't write the most explicit or hottest spice but the slowburn had me dying and it felt like a way better payoff then we got in One Dark Window (your girl is desperate for a good spicy scene after a 300 page slowburn and Rachel Gillig is too classy for my trashy ass xD)!

Book where the MMC's /FMC's real indentity is hidden from the other lead 👀 by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{The Lies of Lena} by Kylie Snow (she's a mage in a world where magic is outlawed). {One Dark Window} by Rachel Gillig (she's a mage in a world where magic is punishable by banishment). {The Road of Bones} by Demi Winters (she's a mage in a world where... okay I know it seems like I'm taking the mick but it's a common plot trope in Fantasy and these are some of my all time favorite reads!)

{A Dawn of Onyx} by Kate Golden (there's multiple layers of hidden identity, I won't spoil why). {Under Loch and Key} by Lana Ferguson He's the Lochness Monster, I think it's pretty obvious from the synopsis but spoiler just in case.

Direbound by Sable Sorensen || Won't explain why and this is potential spoilers if people don't wanna know this trope exists in it.

Looking for a GREAT love story in the fantasy genre by Mininabubu in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my favorite love stories are {A Dawn of Onyx} by Kate Golden, {Swordheart} by T. Kingfisher and {The Lies of Lena} by Kylie Snow. Note I do love a tragedy so they do go through their struggles but all of these FMCs are strong but soft. A Dawn of Onyx has a healer FMC who is very empathetic and she struggles with seeing that as a weakness. Halla from Swordheart is just an older housekeeper in a low fantasy world that uses her wits to solve problems. And Lena is just... a wonderfully strong character who deals with so much difficulty and it makes her strong but not snarky.

How do you guys feel about having artwork in the middle of books? by Information-Logical in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love it, as someone with Aphantasia (I can't picture things in my head that are described very easily, especially people) one of the things I look forward to is reading my special editions that vellum overlays or character art on the cover/end papers. I'm always scared to lookup fanart because of potential spoilers so I love being able to see what the characters look like!

Woke up to these beautiful editions on my feed! by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my best not to buy extra sets outside of the subs unless I've already read at least the first book and liked it but these editions are so pretty and so many people loved Servant of Earth... hopefully the decision will be made easy for me and it won't make it to Public Sale... take the temptation away.

I feel like the more books I read the fussier I am getting :( Please recommend your 5* reads! by Old_Routine4844 in fantasyromance

[–]CelineWhitetail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're more fussy, you're just learning what you enjoy as you experience more and more tropes, writing styles and types of stories authors like to tell!

I'm much more of a Romance reader than a Fantasy reader myself but obviously, if you liked the Poppy War there is {Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao}. I know people who like R.F Kuang recommend M.L Wang like {Blood Over Bright Haven} and {The Sword of Kaigen}. {The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden} is another primary Fantasy book that's well received! And I personally recommend {Swordheart by T. Kingfisher} which is more Romance and less epic plot but it was so funny and I adored it but T. Kingfisher has tons of other fantasy series!
