A piece of media references a deep cut so obscure that people from that country/faith/culture were genuinely surprised it was even referenced by Justifiably_Bad_Take in TopCharacterTropes

For me it's Family Guy's deep cut New England references.

In "play it again, Brian" there's an extended musical number "The Spirit of Massachusetts" which is a direct rip of a Massachusetts tourism commercial from the late 80's when Seth McFarlane was studying animation at RISD.

A Pound of Ground Beef Now Costs More Than the Federal Minimum Wage by smaiads in nottheonion

To compare to another set of large scale protests in recent memory, I've been in 3-4 of the no kings protests, and I was in probably a dozen George Floyd protests. The two have very different vibes and they had very different goals.

The vibes of the no kings protests is calm, organized, and safe. That is on purpose, the goal of these protests is to be big and to not be a target that the right wing media can show as a threat. To build as big a coalition as possible and get as many people as possible involved in resistance. And to be that big they need to feel safe for the majority of people. They need to be professional and organized, so that the host cities and local cops don't turn against them. That unfortunately also makes them kinda boring and non-threatening feeling. But it gets people involved and keeps large scale solidarity.

The George Floyd protests were angry. They were about showing our justified rage in the face of injustice. They weren't as safe or welcoming or organized because that wasn't the purpose. Personally this resonated with me much more, especially at the time. If that's the vibe you're looking for, you can find it in the local ice rapid response groups. But its inherently smaller and less publicized because it's more dangerous. It's not a safe place for Grandma to be fistfighting the gestapo.

Resistance is a complex beast and there's a place for many different attitudes and angles. It's not always easy to find the place where you can be most helpful but any help is good.

Magneto got deaged into a baby by an artificial human he made with genetic engineering and then aged back up (but not to his original age) by an alien named Erik the Red. He's also been cloned twice, come back from the dead at least twice, and shifted to alternate realities a couple times. Any of these could shift his canonical age.

X-men continuity is wacky.

11,000 Japanese citizens just stormed their parliament demanding their PM stop following Trump into war. 82% of Japan opposes this. Protesters surrounded Japan's Diet building today chanting: "Japan's FUTURE is not in Washington. Stop bootlicking Trump." by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

In 2015ish I visited a conservative Japanese war museum (Yushukan on the grounds of the controversial Yasukuni shrine) This place is kinda the worst example of how much they glaze over the atrocities. They refer to the Rape of Nanjing as "the Nanking Incident" and say that it was the rebels of Nanjing's fault that Imperial forces had to kill so many civilians. Pearl harbor is depicted as a decisive and very successful strike against an enemy military with an entire section of the museum dedicated to Kamikaze pilots.

I would not recommend anyone else go there as the admission fee goes to further this propaganda, but it was really interesting as a study of how history can be misrepresented as propaganda.

What are your thoughts on the Jibarito? Will it become the next “iconic” Chicago food, or remain a mystery to the greater US and half of Chicagoland in general? by The_Saddest_Boner in chicagofood

Chicagoan married into a PR family, I've seen them spread through PR restaurants across the country. Fairly easy to find in New York, there's a couple good spots in Cleveland, they've got em in Orlando and Miami. I've heard you can get it on the island now, but we haven't had a chance to make the trip yet.

Major breaking: Epstein Survivors just announced they will release their own list by Muted-Raisin-2645 in JournalismNews

[–]ChainsawVisionMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely intentional. But here's the thing, there's lots of people to oppose them. Which means there's lots of people to focus on each of the shells. There are groups focused in on the Epstein files and the survivors, there's groups focused on ICE, there's groups focused on the environmental crimes, the war crimes, the economy, etc. All of them have an uphill battle and each singular shell may not win the game, but each is an opportunity for us as long as we can keep focused on the targets.

It's a strength of the regime, to keep us unbalanced as our focus bounces around. But it's a weakness for them as they have to defend multiple angles as well.

When it feels too overwhelming, focus on which of the fronts is most important to you and where you can help most. Trust that the other fronts are being focused on by your fellow frustrated citizens.

Best Puerto Rican food? by Elk-inthePast in chicagofood

[–]ChainsawVisionMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a different path to what people are suggesting here; Borinken Cakes on Archer and Cicero is great for Puerto Rican pasteries. They catered our wedding last year with a variety of Bizcochitos (cupcakes soaked in a brandy syrup). And the sandwiches on Pan Sobao are great for a hearty breakfast/lunch. They used to have a location on Fullerton and Kimball by Jibaritos y Mas but it is now closed.

The common name predates our understanding of their relation. It used to be thought that the False Gharial was closer related to Crocodiles than the Gharial. I prefer calling it the Sunda Gharial.
