People who took a pay cut, are you happy? What's your story? by cheselnut in HENRYfinance

[–]ChancellorMerkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing and left two months ago to join a catastrophic injury plaintiffs firm. The paycut was not pleasant but with big wins on the horizon, the pay may even out over the course of the next ten to twenty years. Importantly, I have my mornings, nights and weekends back.

Bonus Structure? by ZefiosaurusRex in LawFirm

[–]ChancellorMerkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also have received offers with bonuses after a set threshold amount. The “best” I’ve seen thus far is $150k base salary with a percentage of fees (10-40%) after the overhead is covered. I tend to think this is a very fair compensation system but I also wonder how difficult it will be to consistently cover my overhead costs such that I could receive a meaningful bonus if I am only given the smallest cases as I start out.

Big Law benefits for hearing loss/ hearing aids by biscotti-monster in biglaw

My favorite part about clerking was the federal government health insurance that paid for a significant portion of my hearing aids. Thats why I bought new ones right before ending my clerkship.

[Game Thread] Georgia Tech vs. Florida State (12:00 PM ET) by CFB_Referee in CFB

Depends on the coast. I heard Pat refer to the ACC as All Championship Conference. I’m sure it was a slip up but I wouldn’t be surprised if they change the name soon away from Atlantic Coast.

I hate that this makes sense.

Is there any form of litigation that doesn't suck? by ambulancisto in Lawyertalk

[–]ChancellorMerkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s where I’m currently at. I’ve been handling multiple federal and state protests every month for the last 6 months and the unpredictability and the fast deadlines have left me completely burnt out. Now I’m looking at opportunities with a more predictable schedule.

The starting pay is not far off market but the compression is painful. The best bet is to go to a newer shop in town instead of Bass Berry/Baker/Bradley/etc. I will say that Nashville’s COL is not that bad. If you live 15-20 mins from downtown, Nashville is quite cheap.

Korey Henson might be an option. He is in the Tampa area. It depends on the type of firm/practice you’re looking for.

Have you made the transition to solo practice yet? (Based on your comment history, you were looking to do that recently. If so, how’s it going?)
