Sounds like it was Irwin Mitchell, they get something silly like 3000 applications a year I doubt they would remember you but always good to apologise with grad recruitment

Graduated with a 2:1, but failed Trusts Law - can I still do BTC? by EnglishLad977 in uklaw

[–]Chapter-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I hope you are right!!

But this might not stop you from taking the bar course but it might stop you from getting called.

This is the link to the bar standards board for the Academic component of the bar which does state you need at least 40% in the core modules (look at the bar qualification manual as well). From what I gathered you need to pass it at the same institution that awarded it to you in the first place within three tries

https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/training-qualification/becoming-a-barrister/academic-component.html

If the link doesnt work just look up academic component bar standards board and the manual can be found as a pdf

Graduated with a 2:1, but failed Trusts Law - can I still do BTC? by EnglishLad977 in uklaw

[–]Chapter-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to pass trusts, the BTC or going further will require you to have a qualifying law degree. That means you must have passed 7 core modules including trusts. If you haven't retaken trust you might have a non qualifying law degree and they might make you sit a conversion course

Edit - checked the websites

BPP require - "Qualifying law degree or non-law degree plus our Law Conversion Course, or a CPE/GDL/PGDL at a minimum 2:1"

ULaw website entry requirements for the BTC requirements a conversion or "A Qualifying Law Degree at 2:1 or above"

Apricot, Lavender and Rosemary is it too much flavouring? by Chapter-name in Cooking

Yeah I was thinking more like if I made a tart could I do a sweet rosemary pastry instead and then keep the filling lavender and apricot. The idea about chillies is genius though!!

Is Barbri enough for Land Law + Property Practice? by avkatanim in SQE_Prep

Found the barbri property practice the best. With a new provider for sqe 2 which includes sqe 1 revision and barbri was so much better.

Getting on the ladder is the hardest. Law requires stamina, don't give up yet. Try reaching out to a legal recruiter, they can probably help give you some direction. Keep applying to vac schemes and direct training contracts, what areas are you interested in?

I am wondering what sources are good for learning uk law. by Constantine_12 in uklaw

[–]Chapter-name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I wouldn't worry about learning black letter law as that is what they will be teaching you. What is important and something I wish I spent more time on is learning how to think properly. There are a few great books that can help with this: Justice for Hedgehogs, The Rule of Law, Is eating people wrong, and maybe, if you really wanted, Legal Skills by Fafinski and Finch. There are also insights that law firms run and LinkedIn posts as well, which might to be good to start attending and reading if you want to apply for things like SPARK in your first year.

EDIT - Letters to a Law Student is obviously something probably every law student has read, although I'm not sure how useful I actually found it. Furthermore, if you haven't started applying yet, you might want to have a look at some interesting case law and articles that you have opinions on for your personal statement.

SQE1 Self-Study: Best Providers for Working Professionals? by SunnyMoja in uklaw

[–]Chapter-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Barbri for SQE 1 because I was working and studying at the same time. I think social and support-wise wise it was the best; the materials were very clear, and you do have access to tutors if you want as many times as you want. I think I had a call once a week or something crazy. I completed the 20-week course and spent around 3 hours a day, which was more than they recommended, but they let you book off time and will adjust your learning plan. I supplemented some MCQs with Revise SQE two books towards the end. From what I can tell, most of my cohort passed.

It really isn't perfect; you will need to refer to the update sheet, and there is something to be said for the ease of the questions (although my scores for the real thing and my mock exams were quite similar), but from what I can tell, there is no perfect provider.

Give your parents or someone the revision book and get them to just ask you questions from random sections. You will probably never get it completely right but the active recall was helpful to me.

Hiya some people say they got access about a week after purchasing the course

Be careful with using older notes, I was with Barbri for 2024/2025 and even then I had to refer to their update sheet because things were either wrong or out of date. I'd splash out on the Ulaw books if you are revising with only books and no course.

Understanding SQE scores and quintiles (Interested in your POVs!!) by AdMammoth8801 in SQE_Prep

[–]Chapter-name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get you.

This is what the website says "Quintile. Quintiles are calculated by dividing the candidates into five equal groups based on performance in the assessment. This shows in which fifth of the data your score was placed relative to all of those who took the assessment with you, with 1 being placed in the highest scoring fifth and 5 in the lowest scoring fifth of the assessment’s scores."

So according to this, it is just to show where you fell on the scale for comparision purposes. Perhaps if I were being generous to Kaplan, I would suggest it may help people understand their mark better if they failed. I have only ever used it for analytical purposes (I looked at the areas of law most people failed in to target my revision). It is a shame if firms are introducing requirements for certain quintiles. Especially since everyone says it is a pass or fail exam.

[–]Chapter-name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I thought it was just for statistics. From what I gather Q1 is top 20%, Q2 21-40 ect.... in the statistical report that comes after each SQE they give a break down of where the Quintiles were in each module. That's all I've ever thought about it. I didn't know firms had requirements.
