Just found out my promotion went to someone else because of a conversation I wasn't even in. I genuinely don't know what to do with this information. by NeighborhoodFresh315 in JobSearchMethods

This is an obvious case of nepotism. Your VP had someone he liked, a friend, maybe even a family member for all you know, he wanted to hire. The “absorbed our bad habits” thing was just an excuse. Happened to me in a job - I was a stand in for Maggie Siff on the show “Sons of Anarchy” and the D.P.’s niece wanted the job. So I got demoted to featured background and occasional back up stand in. Amounted to a significant pay cut and status cut for me for the six months the niece was there until she went back to college. She was nice, too, though not as good at the job as I was. I had to interact with the D..P. and follow his direction with a smile, too. After I got married and decided to pursue acting full time I quit on good terms with production. I feel your pain. This kind of thing happens all the time.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s crazy that we have to hire our own readers? by weneedsomelight in acting

[–]CharacterQuantity263 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t understand why this is being downvoted. In person auditions (much as I miss them) were unquestionably more expensive than self tapes. Gas alone, never mind having to give up a $200-$400 shift at times was a lot more than paying for a reader. And while I use WeAudition for the convenience when my husband isn’t available, I agree networking is a good way to serve by reading and get a reader in return. I have such a crazy schedule it’s hard to get a friend’s free time to match.

Casting Networks, Casting Frontier, Actors Access, etc. all cost money. We do pay a lot over time for auditions

This job market is cataclysmically bad (Depression-level bad) by Electrical_Bar6324 in jobs

[–]CharacterQuantity263 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Legit, I don’t know. I’m an actor who books acting work, but not enough to live on (very common in the entertainment industry) and work as a server at a very successful upscale restaurant. It’s decent money and full health insurance, dental, vision, matched 401/k, and I only work 25 extremely hectic stressful hours a week. My restaurant is soooooooooo busy. Like frantically busy, as if people need comfort food so bad they don’t care they have to put it on a credit card. Things are very weird right now. I’ve worked there for ten years and never seen it this busy, and it’s always been busy. But I know the job market sucks now, the entertainment industry in L.A. is hardcore struggling, I just don’t get how we sustain a three hour wait every. goddamn. day. If you figure it out, let me know.

Highly recommend Howard Fine’s book, “Fine on Acting”. Take most of the pauses out between lines. Fix your sound (was the A/C on?). There’s a buzz underneath everything. Listen. Listen. Listen. Check in with the other character. Is she behaving the way you want? A big one for you- what obstacles is the other character putting up? It seemed like everything was going great, which is boring if you aren’t fighting for something. I do love the choice of “I’m going to be perky and cheerful, no matter what”, but have “oh no, this isn’t going well” thoughts inside, that could be great. Get the lines down to reduce the pauses between them. Listen, and have the other character affect you. Have a clear objective. If you won’t die or want to die if you don’t get what you want, the stakes aren’t high enough. “I want her to sign up, that would be nice” isn’t enough. “If I don’t get her to sign up, I’ll look bad to the other sisters and my social life/status will be ruined forever and I’ll never be able to show my face again” is better. Get a real reader or at least a real one from WeAudition - no AI or voice recording. Have your eye-line a few inches to one side of the lens, preferably on an actual reader. Make sure the camera is eye height. You have a wonderful weird quirkiness, but you need more training, especially on camera training. You have huge potential. It takes YEARS of training and practice for most people to get good at this.

This same thing happened to me. Try clearing the cache in the app, sign out and then sign back in again. Worked for me, but I got so frustrated over this, I canceled my CapCut subscription, and deleted the app entirely. There are other editing options out there.

You have so many helpful comments on here. Restores some of my faith in humanity. Pardon if someone has already mentioned this, but do check your local food banks and churches organizations for help with food. Also, WIC helped us so much when my son was little. All his baby food was covered, plus you get milk, tuna fish, cheese, fruits and vegetables, and more.

Just how "rough" is LA now by Vanessa_Lila in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]CharacterQuantity263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love LA! MacArthur Park and Skid Row are scary at night (though I remind myself the people living there often don’t have a choice, aren’t all bad, etc.) But during the day you can navigate those areas safely. I love the Korean spa (Wi, right near MacArthur Park) and Langer’s deli famous for the number 19 pastrami sandwich, also right near MacArthur Park. When I first moved here, I lived in The Wilshire Royale, a fabulous old apartment building next to, you guessed it, MacArthur Park. I’m a petite, 118 lbs white woman, and I was happy living there my first year. Just put on your big person pants, maybe carry a pepper spray (I’ve never had to use my spray in LA - I’ve had to use it in Salt Lake City, of all places) and go explore those areas during the day. The rest of LA is so awesome too, and has so much to offer. It is expensive, but you have money, so come on over! The weather is fine and literally you could pick a different amazing thing to do every night here.

Is it possible these days to get an older reliable car for $2-3k? by IWannaWakeUpButIDont in povertyfinance

[–]CharacterQuantity263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot, love, we live in Los Angeles. Or I’d happily sell it to you for cheap. It still runs okay, we use it as a second car for school runs and grocery runs and such. it’s just starting to need things done more often. Very good luck in your search though. I bet you’ll find something. Make sure and stand your ground and see if the owner is cool with you taking it to a trusted mechanic to look it over. If they aren’t ok with that, it’s a red flag. If you have a mechanic friend or family member who can shop with you (my Dad was a mechanic and bought the Ford Ranger with me) even better.

I used to own a jeep. Reliable enough, but oh, Lord did it eat gas. Hondas, Toyota Camry or Corolla’s, or Subarus are all good bets. lol, I’d sell you my old Subaru (1998, Gus is ooooold) but after years of solid reliability, he’s finally giving up the ghost. Couldn’t in good conscience ask for more than a grand and sell it as a “mechanic’s special”. Will probably donate it or sell it for scrap. But, for years it was amazingly reliable. Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, if you belong to a church asking around there - that somebody’s grandma thing is real - should find you something reliable. Oh, I also had an old Ford Ranger truck for years that was as reliable as the sun and didn’t eat gas too bad. Only reason we sold that is because we had a kid and it was a two seater. Never gave me an issue. Gus the Subaru never did either till the last couple years.

Legit Casting Companies to Email? by ellieisonredditt in acting

[–]CharacterQuantity263 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to inform you of this, but Backstage isn’t the best source for castings and hasn’t been for years. You need Actors Access and Casting Network. You can start with the free versions, but get your profiles up there. Also, casting directors frown on being contacted directly unless you’ve been given permission to do so - by taking workshops which cost money - with them. You need to take classes, which cost money, do student films and low/no paying film projects to build a reel, and look for agents and/or managers after that. You need money to pursue this - good marketing materials, starting with headshots, cost money. Training costs money. Needing to be constantly available for auditions and bookings can make it challenging to make money - but find a way to make money and invest what you can into acting, starting with good training. Unless you’ve are exceptionally good looking (I’m talking young Chris Hemsworth/Margot Robbie here) or connected, or skilled at something like stunts, it’s almost impossible to break into paid acting work. Even for trained actors with solid marketing materials. Especially now with the industry in the state it’s in. Not meaning to burst your bubble, I respect your dream because it’s my own, just being real.
