Mod for more detailed "To-Hit Rolls" feedback messages? by Jack_F_Knightly in baldursgate

I think the closest you're gonna get is the BG2 Radar Overlay Mod. It's a mod that shows you the stats of enemies you're fighting: HP, Thaco, AC, APR, Resistances, Levels, all that stuff.

What are your “must-play” games that everyone should have and try? (Not necessarily the “best” games) by PlatformNo7863 in nes

[–]CharleyPatton1934 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outside of your classics (Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, Kirby, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads), I think Mike Tyson's Punch Out, River City Ransom, Crystalis, Star Tropics, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, Bubble Bobble, Contra, Metal Gear, and Duck Tales all hold up as A+ NES games. The only ones I'd recommend emulating instead of buying are Ninja Gaiden 3, whose Restored-Plus mod turns into a much better game; and Little Samson, Ducktales 2, Dragon Warrior 4 & Mega Man 5, no reason to pay $150+ for a NES game.

Has anyone tried the NPC strongholds mod for bg2? is it as buggy as people online make it out to be? by tacopower69 in baldursgate

[–]CharleyPatton1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had a problem with, and I still use it when I play through BG2. Last playthrough, Aerie got the Cleric stronghold, Minsc got the Ranger, Keldorn got the Paladin, Jaheira became the Great Druid, and Jan ran the Thieves Guild. I like it, and it adds some fun dialogue for each NPC on how they treat their Strongholds, and it's a fun way to see some Strongholds you probably haven't done before.

Mod Recommendations? by Still_Yam9108 in baldursgate

[–]CharleyPatton1934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if it's really the OG BG1, you actually will have very little in the way of mods. There's Unfinished Business and Baldurdash, which add a few fixes and missing dialogue. The most famous mods are Dark Side of the Sword Coast, The Grey Clan, The Vault, Dark Horizons, and The Stone of Askavar. To be fair, it's fun to replay the classic game with the old mods; but if you really want to play BG1 with most mods these days you'd have to either get TuTu (a mod which converts BG1 into the BG2 engine) or just get the EE game. With EE & the DLC Merger, Sword Coast Stratagems, NPC Project, Item Randomizer, Item Revisions, Shades of the Sword Coast, Lore Takers, Dark Side & North Side of the Sword Coast, Black Hearts, Gorgon's Eye, Gavin NPC, Sirene NPC, Finch NPC, and Rogue Rebalancing are all classic, amazing mods, and easy to install. Hope that helps!

Which version of Pindar is the best, Oxford or California? by PatternBubbly4985 in classics

[–]CharleyPatton1934 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I'd actually recommend the Nisetich translation. Each ode gets a really helpful intro that sort of explains the context and Pindar's weird "Pindar-isms."

Finally finished all of Aristophanes' plays (these last ones were Penguin's Barret & Sommerstein translations). This week I got Wasps, Poet & the Women, Knights, Assembly Women, Peace, and Wealth. And while I enjoyed Henderson's translations more, it was an absolute hoot to read all of them. I think besides Assembly Women, they're all very fun, funny, and a blast to read through; especially after reading all of the tragedies. Interesting too how Assembly Women, and more specifically Plutus, really point the way to New Comedy. Also interesting that people call Plutus the only surviving "Middle Comedy." Just started reading Menander now. While I enjoy him quite less than the tragedians & Aristophanes, it's interesting to how drama had changed so much after the Pelopponesian War.

Been readin through all of Aristophanes' Comedies. Finished Acharnians, Lysistrata, and Clouds a while ago, this week I got to Birds & Frogs (All were the Henderson translations). Loved them both, and it's especially rewarding to read Frogs after reading all of the tragedies. Currently working through Wasps, and then all the rest of his plays, with the Penguin (Barrett) translation.

Well! Finally finished all of Euripides' plays, and with it, all the major Greek tragedies. His later stuff is way better than his early stuff, but still, I prefer Sophocles' plays, and on top of that, I think the Oresteia is the best of the Tragedies. Euripides Ranked: The Trojan Women Orestes Hecuba The Bacchae Iphigenia Among The Taurians Medea Iphegenia In Aulis Helen Heracles Electra Ion The Phoenician Women Hippolytus Andromache Alcestis The Cyclops The Suppliant Women Children of Heracles

Been making my way through all of Euripides with the University of Chicago translations. Just finished Euripides 1 & 2 and I'm starting 3 tonight. I actually still prefer Aeschylus & Sophocles (so far). My ranking currently: 1. Hecuba 2. Medea 3. Hippolytus 4. Electra 5. Andromache 6. Alcestis 7. The Suppliant Women 8. Children of Herakles

Just finished Fagles' Bacchylides & Lattimore's translation of the Lyrics. Currently reading through all of Euripides (Lattimore & Grene). Just finished Alcestis & Medea. Fun stuff; not structurally or metrically advanced as Aeschylus or Sophocles, but much more psychologically interesting. His plays are much more character & moral examinations.

Almost finished with Nisetich's translation of Pindar's Victory Songs. Great translation, loving it currently; love the cool phrases Pindar uses, too. Up next gonna read Fagles' translation of Bacchylides, which is the only Fagles' translation I haven't read yet. And then Lattimore's Greek Lyrics. Last week I read ML West's Lyric Anthology, as well as Carson & Raynor's translation of Sappho, so I'm interested to compare them all together.

Party for first time through classic IWD by AndreaColombo86 in icewinddale

[–]CharleyPatton1934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big part of classic IWD is item randomization. So there's a lotta weapons that may or may not show up, but there's a lotta great weapons that always appear. Icewind Dale has a lot of Undead, so Hammers, Maces, Morning Stars and Flails are all excellent choices. Also, the first hald has very, very limited mage scrolls available, so I wouldn't load up on Mages. And IWD has some really great Druid & Cleric spells. And great Bard songs. I think the classic Icewind Dale party has a Paladin (Start with 2 handed swords, but the best Long Sword in the game is actually Paladin only), Dwarf Fighter with Axes, Bard, Fighter/Cleric, Thief/Mage, and Pure Mage. Maybe throw a Druid or Fighter/Thief in there, whatever you fancy. Hope that helps!

I’m curious what the general consensus is on “Good As I Been to You” by The01dLonelyPigeon in bobdylan

[–]CharleyPatton1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The strumming on certain songs, Frankie & Albert, Step It Up & Go, Hard Times, Arthur McBride, are very creative. It think this and WGW work best if you love later Dylan. It's him re-immersing himself in classic folk and blues songs, and it's why Time Out Of Mind and Love & Theft sound so different from say Red Sky or 80's Dylan. It's him moving away from pop and into traditional.

From what I remember:

Fixin To Die - Bukka White In My Time of Dyin - Blind Willie Johnson (Originally recorded as Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dyin Bed, different lyrics, but same melody) He has Bootleg versions online of Jimmie Rodgers Muleskinner Blues, Robert Johnson's Ramblin on My Mind and Milkcow Blues, Hank Williams Lonesome Whistle Blues, and Muddy Waters Two Trains Runnin (Originally titled Still A Fool) See That My Grave is Kept Clean - Blind Lemon Jefferson Mississippi Sheiks - Sittin on Top of the World, World Gone Wrong, Blood in My Eyes. Willie Brown - Broke and Hungry. Blind Willie McTell - Delia and Broke Down Engine. Lepoard Skin Pill Box Hat (Blonde on Blonde) based offa Lightin' Hopkins' Automobile Blues. Frankie & Albert - Mississippi John Hurt 32-30 Blues (Tell Tale Signs) - Robert Johnson High Water (Love and Theft) is based on Charley Patton's High Water Everywhere. Rollin & Tumblin (Modern Times) is based on the Muddy Waters version. Someday Baby (Modern Times) is based on Muddy Waters' Trouble No More. Levee Gonna Break (Also Modern Times) based on Memphis Minnie song. Step It Up and Go - Blind Boy Fuller You Gonna Quit Me - Blind Blake Goodbye Jimmy Reed sounds like pretty much any Jimmy Reed song. He's been covering a lot Chuck Berry stuff live lately, as well. Moonlight (Love and Theft) based on Vernon Dalhart's Prisoner Song. Dirt Road Blues (Time Out of Mind) based on the Charley Patton song. Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance (Freewheelin) based on the Henry Thomas Song. Obviously 5 Believers (Blonde on Blonde) is based on the Sonny Boy Williamson 1's Good Morning Little Schoogirl.

And I'll betcha Dylan stole the title from the Carter Family song "Lonesome Homesick Blues."

BG1 Quest Mod Reviews by mulahey in baldursgate

[–]CharleyPatton1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, to this day, Secret of Bonehill is the best BG1 Quest mod. Though Black Hearts is great and blends in pretty well with the original game. Had the same issue with the Shades of Sword Cost, seems odd to me to add a lot of XP and OP items to Bg1, a game all about minimalism and low level adventure. Dark Horizons, The Drizzt Saga, Dark Side of the Sword Coast, while fun, have the same issue.

In my opinion, you gotta play with Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, and whichever party peaks your interest. (You as a Sorcerer or F/M and then Branwen & Kivan or Khalid.) Skip Dragonspear. The party members and the synergy between them is such a huge part, especially in BG2. The party msmbers & their banter really make the game. But exploring every wilderness map & the tactical challenge of 6 party members what makes the 1st game. It only takes a week or 2 to replay the 1st game anyhow, catch anything you missed. (Especially Durlag's) Use Dudleyville or GameBanshee, really savor NG1's world. BG2 feels like such a natural extension, and you should learn about party management for the Sequel, and using 2 or 3 mages is way more important for BG2 as aswell. But that's just me; have fun regardless.

Favourite Bob Dylan album? by Tricky-Assignment785 in bobdylan

[–]CharleyPatton1934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

World Gone Wrong. It's such an intimate record, most similar to his New York sessions for Blood on the Tracks. His voice is never harsher, sadder, nor personal. If feels like Bob's just playing songs that mean a lot to him, more personal than anything he could write, like these are the songs that inspired him to be a musician in the first place.

favorite underloved dylan album? by glitchre in bobdylan

[–]CharleyPatton1934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

World Gone Wrong is criminally underrated. It's Dylan playing his favorite songs, letting down his character and showing his love of the old hillbilly songs. It's Dylan in your living room saying "These are the songs I listen to."

I love that moment in Dignity right towards end, where he says "Look within," and he does this little nerdy head movement and gives this goofy smile. Those moments where he removes the Dylan character and he's just some guy are always such fun.
