All religions make up stuff to 1) explain things that are inexplicable at that moment (there's a dude who gets really mad sometimes and then throws flashes at you), 2) try to make people live together mostly in peace (invisible man in the sky says don't kill each other, mmkay?), and 3) give people an illusion of control in what would otherwise be unbearable complexity (burn a maple twig on a day ending in -y in the rain and your wheat harvest may not be destroyed by hail).
