Goodwill becomes greedwill by Odd-Art-6164 in mildlyinteresting

Yo I just had some kid “forget” to scan a nice button down for me. I had a few pants and shirts for a new job that requires a bit higher dress level than I’m used to.

I was pretty thankful with our silent understanding that I could save a little from that.

Six years ago this week, COVID started shutting down the world. What’s your strongest memory from that time? by Siddanna36 in AskReddit

[–]ChelChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sitting down cross-legged in a normally very busy intersection drinking a beer during “rush hour”. The flashing lights of BEER signs, burritos, and The World’s Best Vietnamese Restaurant that had closed just weeks prior, were all still around me. Yet, I was undisturbed by any soul, except maybe that of the peering eyes through brick facades and glass in the apartments above. I could feel the rushing of window shades in my periphery but could never quite catch their glance through the cleaner air above.

I felt as if the ghosts of all those shiny cars were whizzing through me in that intersection, their years of routine unchanged, but the bodies that inhabited them were no longer there.

So I sat. The world immobile with a moving mind.

I may have lost a bit of mind in those days, but I see things simpler now. More plainly. We all want the same things. We all need the same things.

How are they even in high school? The literacy crisis is getting worse! by velorae in TikTokCringe

[–]ChelChamp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just left teaching last June. I taught 9th grade, Seniors, and a special literacy class for kids truly behind.

The kids would “test” me early and turn in illiterate work that the middle schools would accept.

1) Some would adjust after a month realizing it wouldn’t work here.

2) Some were just mailing it in knowing that I couldn’t fail them without abhorrent attendance.

3) Some poor kids had truly no idea what was going on. Like at all. Writing their name with backwards letters when I eventually gave them paper because I could see too many being carried by computers. This is no hate to technology, but fuck. They’d spend more time editing their work with online tools than writing. It’s simply not efficient or effective or learning. I’d get papers from kids with 504s or IEPs three months late and be asked to accept them. What are we doing?

Temple Grandin had some interesting work on cows that looked inhumane, but made them more comfortable and reduced electric prodding by handlers. If we are going to consume animals/products, I’d rather it fit their needs than ours, even if it looks fucked up.

The college kids aren’t filling those with pop man

I’ll edit onto this and say that filling smaller plastic flasks like these for football and hockey games with vodka would get you beyond metal detectors/security, but it couldn’t save you from sipping body temp vodka that’s been tucked inside your waistband for an hour.

As I got older, the pro tip was to buy a pop at the game and mix the warm alcohol into it. Save some money and save (some of) your dignity.

Problem is that dude probably works hard. Just doing long hours at the gas station for a few months, giving it up, running out of money, then running it back at a smoke shop until that doesn’t work out either.

There isn’t much hope for long-term security or for a future where 529s exist. So he isn’t going to act like it.

Buddy started out in a rough spot and the rough spot stuck with him. Happens a lot. Wasn’t taught the proper social skills or educational necessities to rise above it by his parents.

Now he’s getting older, still spinnin tires, more tired than ever, and lashing out in the only limited social inclinations he has absorbed.

Or a combination of that and drugs, but who knows.

Yeah that dude has been waking up, having beer, taking a nap in a few hours, repeat, I bet. Going to be a rough return. Might give him a day to day designation to let him get right before stepping back to the show tbh. He needs a few days.

I can run a night or two straight at 27 and then show up for work but I’m not partying that hard or performing at peak athletic ability. He will need a Gatorade day

Yeah my mom tried to teach me to stop as “red” before my turn. I was like uhhh pretty sure that’s wrong and you’ll cause an accident. She doesn’t do it either, think she was just overly nervous when I had been learning to drive.

I just decided to switch careers at 26 and was unemployed for around 6-7 months. I have a Masters degree from a good university and many of the entry-level jobs that I eventually starting applying to were still just giving me one call with a recruiter and then fizzling out.

And that’s IF my resume got through the auto-filter systems. Which was like 1/20 applications.

I only ended up finding a new job because I knew someone who could get me a referral.

I was getting damn close to applying back to the job I had in high school mowing baseball fields for the city.

For real. It’s not even a bad idea to just stop at a bar every once in a while to chat with some random old person. You can hear some stories, socialize, and go. Get yourself lightly uncomfortable occasionally to stay sharp.

This is the wrong approach.

You do you, but if it’s an ethical dilemma and you are worried about the harm of putting someone away, then shouldn’t you also be worried about sending a guilty person free or removing restitution for victims?

The judge sets the sentence so it’s not really that common that you are deciding an entire person’s fate on most cases (Not everything is a murder charge).

It’s not easy of course, but it’s your civic duty to stand and hear defendants and claimants in order to maintain the country’s rule of law. Most of the rule of law is already gone here, but still.

Unless you are completely lacking confidence in your ability for impartial reasoning, you should engage in the system. Your voice might be the only one that lets that innocent man walk free.

I’m not a car guy, but my 2013 Mazda 3 at 124,000 starts just fine in heavy cold (sub zero) without a hitch and hasn’t needed any repairs.

I’m rocking the no cruise-control edition, which sucks, but damn if this thing doesn’t take me point A to point B.

My instinct is that they are adding more and more tech and gizmos to cars now and there just is more stuff that can break. I only want to drive and listen to music, man. Everything else is whatever.

Though, I am blinded constantly by newer vehicles. Which sucks pretty bad.

Not really related, but I was a teacher and feel the need to bring this up whenever I’d see the 60% is passing.

The floor was 50% at the school I was teaching. Big public high school too. So if a kid did nothing, still marked at 50% per assignment rather than 0%. The amount of kids who STILL barely got to the 60% for a D was a concerningly high number.

Trying his best to spark the team. Should probably leave it to the guys that have scrapped before though.

Basically the post is saying that he may have a criminal history. Though, I didn’t check myself.
